Diana, Princess of Wales interview with Martin Bashir on BBC Ones Panorama was broadcast in November 1995. In the interview she famously discussed her failed marriage and the love triangle with Camilla Parker-Bowles , in addition to confirming rumours of her destructive mental illness bulimia nervosa.

I had bulimia for a number of years. And thats like a secret disease. You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you dont think youre worthy or valuable. You fill your stomach up four or five times a day some do it more and it gives you a feeling of comfort. Its like having a pair of arms around you, but its temporarily, temporary. Then youre disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again. And its a repetitive pattern which is very destructive to yourself, she told Bashir.

She also described her bulimia as a symptom of what was going on in my marriage. I was crying out for help, but giving the wrong signals, and people were using my bulimia as a coat on a hanger: they decided that was the problem Diana was unstable.

Two years earlier, Diana had appeared to acknowledge her bulimia when she spoke an international conference on eating disorders, but she stopped short of a full confession .

What The Crown Got Right In Portraying Princess Dianas Bulimia: It Let Her Voice Be Heard

This year for Halloween, I almost went as Princess Diana, the biker shorts and oversized sweatshirts version. I was only going to an outdoor exercise class in a field, so I figured my short blond hair, peach biker shorts and big Champion sweatshirt, combined with the timeliness of the upcoming season of The Crown featuring her, would be perfect. I ended up not dressing up , but as Ive watched this season of The Crown, Ive never felt more in her skin.

For 27 years, I had an eating disorder that included anorexia, bulimia and overexercising. In college, I remember thinking if a celebrity like Diana can keep a secret like that, I can do it and no one will notice. Diana married Charles in 1981, and she first spoke about her eating disorder to biographer Andrew Morton in 1992. Thats 11 years that she suffered in the dark. If no one was even going to reach out to help the princess of Wales, I thought if thats how much were in denial about this well, I should be good lying about this one for a while. And I was. Eating disorders thrive in secrecy and exist in plain view. At least mine did. And clearly Dianas did as well, as viewers of this season of The Crown are seeing in detail.

Health & Wellnessa Perfect Storm: Why The Pandemic Has Made It Harder For People With Eating Disorders

A study examining how the COVID-19 epidemic has impacted people with eating disorders found those with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder reported increases in their binge-eating episodes and urges to binge.

Adding The Crown into the mix could be almost like a double whammy for some of them, Bulik said. This is a really high-risk time for relapse because there’s so much uncertainty and so much anxiety, and so this could be just something else.

One of the biggest misconceptions about bulimia is that its a choice, both Bulik and Smolar emphasized. Experts believe its triggered by a person’s biology and life events.

Theres been an increase in conversation about bulimia since the new episodes were released, said Cynthia Bulik, founding director of the University of North Carolina Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders.

She praised The Crown for accurately portraying the condition.

It’s real and I think for people who have the illness to not show it is almost disrespectful because it’s as if it’s like there’s something that’s too shameful about it, Bulik told TODAY.

The more honest we can be about how horrible this illness is it’s a great step toward destigmatizing it.

The Show Makes Recovery Look Easier Than It Is In Reality

Did Princess Diana Have an Eating Disorder? Here

Andrew Walen, eating disorder expert and founder of The Body Image Therapy Center told Insider the show doesn’t accurately represent the struggles that Diana would have gone through in order to recover.;

“The most recent shot of her going to purge was her going over the toilet and deciding she won’t do it. She sat down and hugged herself and decided she wouldn’t purge. I don’t see that as reality,” Walen told Insider.

He added: “For anyone else trying to recover, they know that it’s not real.”

In the National Geographic documentary, “Diana: In Her Own Words,” which features audio footage of the royal, Diana said it wasn’t until she started seeing a therapist that her mental health changed for the better.

“Do people spontaneously recover without therapy? It does happen, sure,” Walen told Insider. “But it’s typically because their lives become more manageable. Her life didn’t become more manageable, it became less manageable. I think they did a disservice to that experience, and what having an eating disorder is like.”

Does Skinny Kate Middleton Have Eating Disorder Like Princess Diana

Kate Middleton is so thin and some are concerned if she has an eating disorder like Princess Diana.

The Duchess of Cambridge has always been skinny but some find her too thin for her age. One netizen asked on Quora if Middleton has an eating disorder like Prince Williams mom. It wasnt a secret that the late Princess of Wales suffered from bulimia.

Lily Francis shared her thoughts about Middletons frame and said that its hard to tell if Middleton has an eating disorder. However, she believes that the duchess might be one of those super slim people by genetics.

Another user defended Middleton by writing that some women are just naturally very thin. She added that those women are able to maintain their thinness by being mindful in what they eat, how much they eat and how much they exercise.

The same user insisted that there is no evidence to prove that Middleton has an eating disorder like the late Princess of Wales. However, she recognized the fact;that this condition can affect people of all sizes, shapes, classes, ages, genders and race.

Daise Kendrick agreed that Middleton is a bit too slim. However, looking back, the future queen consort has always been petite, so its normal for her.

As others have said, she looks in great health, she sparkles, her eyes and hair look great and she has colour in her cheeks. I really think this is just the way she has always been, more or less, Kendrick added.

How Has The Crown Handled This Sensitive Topic

Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind The Crown, said in a statement to The Independent that producers worked closely with Beat to ensure that their portrayal of Princess Dianas bulimia in season four was both accurate to the disorder and sensitively handled.”

Rebecca Willgress, head of communications at Beat, added in a statement to The Independent that while the organisation was not present on the set of the show, the charity offered guidance on how to depict the late Princess of Wales struggle with bulimia in a sensitive and non-glamourising way.

We were consulted by Netflix and Left Bank Pictures during the production, Ms Willgress said.

We were not involved on set, but advised on how to portray eating disorders in a sensitive and non-glamourising way, including signposting to appropriate sources of help and providing trigger warnings where needed.

Why are so many being turned away for treatment?

Jeni was 20 years old, going into her second year of university in Leicester, when she first started making herself sick. Her boyfriend had suddenly left her, leaving her heartbroken and with very low self-esteem.

Because of the break-up, I just didnt have an appetite, Jeni says. Then people started commenting on the fact Id lost weight. It made me feel good at a time when my confidence was at an all-time low. I thought, How can I keep this up?

Thats when she started the binge-purge cycle; uncontrollably eating large quantities of food before forcing herself to vomit. Id go to the corner shop and buy a ridiculous amount of food triple sandwiches, big bags of crisps, sweets and fizzy drinks binge-eat them in a specific order, then purge until there was nothing left. It completely took over my life.

When Jeni saw her doctor, she was told that her potassium levels were so low due to electrolyte imbalances caused by vomiting that she was at risk of having a heart attack. She was referred for therapy but relapsed dangerously five years later, making herself sick around six times a day.

I was scared so eventually I went to my GP for help, Jeni says. But my doctor told me I wasnt underweight enough for treatment. I was crushed. Id always felt like a fraud for having an eating disorder and not being skinny, and that just confirmed it.

We must recognise the prevalence of bulimia in women over 30

The Team Behind The Series Hoped To Tell Dianas Story As Truthfully As Possible

In an interview with Vanity Fair, series creator Peter Morgan said he knew The Crown couldnt just reference Dianas struggle. Not to represent would be to deny the former Princess of Wales some of the true complexity of her character, Morgan explained. It never occurred to me that what we were doing was risky or unusual by showing her struggle with bulimia, because she had talked about it so much.

Corrin herself worked with a movement coach and researched bulimia extensively, she said in an interview with Refinery29. I worked very closely with the script team on developing that storyline, she told the site. I really cared that it was well represented. But I kind of underestimated how hard it would be to portray that side of it.

Princess Diana was told she was wasting food during ...

Actress Corrin has received plenty of praise for her portrayal of the teenage princess in the most recent season of The Crown.

In the first episode, viewers saw a 16-year-old Diana Spencer meet Prince Charles when he was visiting her home, and the pair were instantly taken with each other.

Their relationship evolved quickly as Charless family were keen to see him find a suitable bride before he turned 30.

Diana and Charles came across each other again a couple of years after their first meeting, and Diana was invited to meet the rest of the princes family.

She fitted in well at first and ticked all the boxes as the perfect candidate to marry Charles, with the heir to the throne eventually proposing.

But early on in their engagement, viewers were given insight into how the arrangement had started to take its toll on the teenager.

She was worried about learning all the Royal protocols and grew more concerned that her husband to be was not as invested in the relationship as she had believed.

In one scene, Diana was seen eating desserts and other foods from the fridge late at night, and she was later seen regurgitating the food.

Similarly, after her emotionally-draining lunch with Charless former love interest, Camilla Parker Bowles , she was seen regurgitating the dessert she had eaten.

The third episode started with a warning to viewers, explaining how there were some scenes of an eating disorder that viewers may find distressing.

The renewed conversation about bulimia comes as doctors have seen an increase in eating disorders associated with the coronavirus crisis.

The National Eating Disorders Association reported a 75% uptick in call volume to its help lines in March and April, with calls still very much above the norm this fall.
