Panic attacks can be confusing as well as scary. People generally cant predict them and theres often no clear cause. They can happen in stressful situations but also during calm moments or even during sleep.
It might seem helpful to tell your friend theres nothing to be afraid of. But theyre probably perfectly aware theres no actual threat.
Thats part of what makes panic attacks so confusing. The reaction matches a fear response but nothings happening to cause that fear. In response, someone who gets panic attacks might begin to fear the symptoms themselves, or link them to a serious health issue.
Its typical to feel embarrassed or ashamed of such an intense reaction, Bingham explains. But having a trusted companion offer compassion can allow space for the person to return to baseline.
You can be that person even without understanding why they get panic attacks. Thats far less important than your ability to offer empathy and recognize their distress as real and significant.
What Are Panic Attacks And Anxiety Attacks
Both panic attacks and anxiety attacks cause you to feel intense, overwhelming emotions. While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, theyre not exactly the same thing. Both panic and anxiety attacks activate your nervous system to send you into fight-or-flight mode, causing physical and emotional symptoms. Their differences lie in what causes the attack.
Are All Panic Attacks The Same
Not all panic attacks are experienced in the same way. The following describes one way panic attacks are categorized:
- Expected panic attacks: These attacks occur when a person is subjected to or is anticipating a particular trigger. For example, a person with a fear of heights may have a panic attack when inside of a tall building.
- Situational predisposed panic attacks: These attacks are similar to cued panic attacks, but do not always occur after subjection to a feared situation. These attacks also dont always occur at the time the person is exposed to the trigger. For instance, a person who has a fear of flying may not always have a panic attack while on a plane or may have one after being on a flight.
- Unexpected panic attacks: These attacks occur suddenly without any internal or external;cues.

Characteristics Of The Pain
Although chest pain is common to both a panic attack and a heart attack, the characteristics of the pain often differ.
During a panic attack, chest pain is usually sharp or stabbing and localized in the middle of the chest.
Chest pain from a heart attack may resemble pressure or a squeezing sensation.
Chest pain that occurs due to a heart attack may also start in the center of the chest, but can then radiate from the chest to the arm, jaw, or shoulder blades.
Could It Be A Heart Attack
In the heat of the moment, it is easy to confuse the signs of a panic attack with those of a heart attack, particularly since the physical symptoms can be extremely severe. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is wise to call 999 since sometimes a medical diagnosis is the only way to get clarity quickly and you certainly dont want to take any chances.
Take note if your symptoms include:;
- severe chest pain or pressure
- burning digestive discomfort that feels like indigestion
- shooting or aching pain that radiates down the shoulder into the arm
- discomfort between the shoulder blades
- pain travelling towards the jaw area
These indicators might signal a heart attack and you should get emergency medical help without delay. A heart attack peaks straight away, while a panic attack takes around 10 minutes to peak.
Panic attacks often cause intense feelings of impending doom, like something terrible is going to happen to you. This anxiety may be the result of chronic stress, a recent traumatic event, or trouble coping with lifes ups and downs.

How Do You Know Youre Having A Panic Attack
An;anxiety;or panic attack often comes on suddenly, with symptoms peaking within 10 minutes. For doctors to diagnose a panic attack, they look for at least four of the following signs: sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, a choking sensation, chest pain,;nausea, dizziness, fear of losing your mind, fear of dying, feeling hot or cold, numbness or tingling, a racing heart , and feeling unusually detached from yourself.
How To Cope When You Have Panic Attacks

Thoughts that this could be the end and they are about to die, pass out or go crazy, and thoughts that this might not be a panic attack but something more serious, perhaps a heart attack, for example.

Panic Attacks And Panic Disorder

How Is Panic Disorder Treated
First, talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Your doctor should do an exam and ask you about your health history to make sure that an unrelated physical problem is not causing your symptoms. Your doctor may refer to you a mental health specialist, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist.
Panic disorder is generally treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Talk with your doctor about the best treatment for you.

At What Age Do People Usually Get Diagnosed With Panic Disorder
Panic disorder usually develops in people ages 18 to 35, says Simon A. Rego, PsyD, chief psychologist at Montefiore Health System in New York City.
