You should not take lorazepam if you have:

• a history of allergic reaction to any benzodiazepine .

Short-Term Treatment of Insomnia

• 2-4 mg taken orally at bedtime
• Geriatric: Lower initial dose recommended 0.5-1 mg orally at bedtime, increase as needed. To avoid over-sedation, initial daily dose should not exceed 2 mg

Preoperative Sedation, Anxiety Relief, & Anterograde Amnesia

• 0.05 mg/kg intramuscularly for 1 dose 2 hours before surgery not to exceed 4 mg , OR
• 0.044 mg/kg intravenously for 1 dose 15-20 minutes before surgery not to exceed 4 mg

Status Epilepticus – Adult

• Usual 4 mg/dose slow IV at 2 mg/min
• If seizure persists after 5-10 min, administer 4 mg IV again

Status Epilepticus – Pediatric

• Infants and children: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg IV over 2-5 minutes not to exceed 4 mg/dose may repeat every 10-15 minutes as needed
• Alternatively, 0.1 mg/kg at slow IV rate not to exceed rate of 2 mg/minute not to exceed dose of 4 mg
• Adolescents: 4 mg slow IV if seizure persists after 10-15 minutes, administer 4 mg IV again

Ativan Abuse And Substance Use Disorder

Benzodiazepines, including Ativan, are schedule IV controlled substances as listed by the Drug Enforcement Administration. This is because of the potential for abuse and because they are habit-forming. Misusing Ativan, such as taking more than recommended or using it for a longer period of time than recommended, can lead to dependence. Even using the drug as directed, but for a long period of time, can cause dependence.

A Last Resort Medication

Lorazepam is definitely a last resort medication for me. Most of the time my anxiety can be helped by doing some mindfulness activities or talking to people, like my care coordinator, who has been brilliant at helping me cope with my anxiety. Lorazepam just helps when the above strategies dont work.

I still have a very long way to go in my recovery. I really want to get to a point where I dont have a need for medication. • Take lorazepam exactly as your doctor tells you to – the dose will be individualised to suit your needs. The directions for taking the tablets will be printed on the label of the pack to remind you about what the doctor said to you. You could be asked to take just one single dose , or to take regular doses for a short while. If you are to take lorazepam regularly for anxiety, you will probably be prescribed two or three doses to take a day. If you are taking it because you are having difficulty sleeping, you will be prescribed a dose to take at bedtime only. The course of treatment prescribed will be as short as possible. If you have any questions about how to take the tablets, please ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
• Try to take your doses of lorazepam at the same times of day each day, as this will help you to remember to take them. Swallow the tablet with a drink of water. You can take lorazepam either with or without food.
