What I Know Now

Can You Have Bipolar Disorder Borderline Personality? |Heres Why It Matters

Bipolar disorder does the dirty work for me and filters out individuals who tiptoe through life. The fact is, we all have issues, whether you live with bipolar disorder or not. And if someone won’t give you a chance because of a label, consider yourself lucky. Today I approach dating with one purpose to have fun. Dating experiences can teach you a lot about yourself. In an attempt to mask my vulnerability, I have found that I can be a bit harsh and overly confident in some situations.

Living with bipolar disorder gives you a very different perspective on the world around you. You look for meaning and depth in everything. We behave based on what we feel, not necessarily what we know is right or wrong. Sometimes this can lead us to be irresponsible and careless, but if handled properly, can actually be a gift to another person.

In my opinion, everyone benefits from getting to know someone who is unlike them. I believe individuals with bipolar or any mental health condition add depth and understanding to a person’s life. We live in a society right now that lacks empathy and is void of emotion. The most empathetic people I know live with bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety.

Encourage Them To Tap Their Creative Potential: In Both Phases

Bipolar people can be incredibly creative. So please give us the first push if we are bored or uninspired or slowly on the verge of getting destructive. You do not have to be obvious, but the right movie, the right words, the right poetry or painting maybe all the inspiration we need to start creating art of our own.

If we are not comfortable sharing or discussing our work, please do not push us to do just that. Some of us are very touchy about such things.

First Dates: Manage Your Expectations And Have A Getaway Plan

Id just remind myself to cool it its just a date, says freelance writer Laura Dattaro, 28, of New York City. Dattaro was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder right after her 23rd birthday. It can be easy to get carried away, especially if your mood is on the upswing. That excitement and good feeling may make the new person seem like your soul mate or new best friend, she says, and when that doesnt pan out its a big bummer.

Dr. Greenberg agrees, noting that in someone with bipolar disorder, that excitement can be heightened. So to those with bipolar who are entering the dating scene, she advises, since bipolar people can be impulsive, you might want to prepare yourself for taking your time. For example, you might not want to get too sexual prematurely.

Greenberg also says that your anxiety could be heightened. Leah Yegneswaran, 24, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20, agrees. I worry that Ill be triggered over the course of the date, says the University of Mary Washington student.

So Yegneswaran creates a backup plan to accommodate the possibility of an anxiety attack. I tell friends in the area of the date that I might need a safe space in case something happens and I need to crash somewhere, she says.

Different Treatments For Bipolar Disorder

Living with Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is usually treated with:

  • Other forms of therapy and counseling that may include family members
  • Electroconvulsive therapy, also called shock therapy because small electrical waves are used

The right combination of these various therapies can reduce or eliminate bipolar mood changes between mania and depression, as well as prevent or reduce symptoms, including hypersexuality.

Those symptoms of hypersexuality may be a red flag for some people with bipolar disorder indicating that they are slipping into a manic episode. If a person with bipolar starts to notice themselves thinking more about sex or engaging in promiscuous behavior, she should notify her doctor of this onset of symptoms.

What Bipolar Disorder Is

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that affects the brain. As mentioned earlier, the disorder affects a persons mood, energy and activity levels, and their ability to complete everyday tasks. If you have heard the term manic-depressive disorder or manic-depressive illness, these are other names for bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorders bring sudden and dramatic changes in mood, which can be so extreme that they impair a persons ability to think and reason properly. A person with the illness could be energetic at one point and then experience extreme depression at another point. This cycling of behavioral changes is unpredictable. As a result, some people with bipolar are prone to risky behaviors and suicidal tendencies.

NIMH identifies three types of bipolar: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder .

Bipolar I involves manic episodes that last at least seven days. A person with bipolar I experiences periods of unusually high mood and high energy that disrupt their lives. Manic symptoms are so severe that they require immediate hospital treatment. People with this type of bipolar may also struggle to work or socialize with other people. They also are susceptible to experiencing psychosis, a mental illness that causes one to lose touch with reality. Bipolar I can include depressive episodes that last two weeks, and people can have depression and manic symptoms occur at the same time.

What To Do If Your Man Has Bipolar

Poem

If you suspect the man youre dating has bipolar, its important to approach the subject sensitively. The last thing you want is for him to feel you’re labeling him or criticizing him for something he can’t control. What’s more, although we’re more accepting and understanding of mental illness as a society, a stigma around bipolar still exists for men, yet bipolar affects men slightly more than it affects women .

Try saying something like, “I’ve been finding out more about bipolar disorder, and it’s more common than people think. I think you might have some of the symptoms. Do you want to know more?”

Ultimately, your partner’s response to this information will impact how you respond. Although you can encourage him to see his doctor and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist, you can’t force him to go. Explain that you don’t think he’s “crazy” you just want him to be as happy and healthy as possible, and you feel like his symptoms are getting in the way of that.

Offer to support him by going to the doctors office with him or suggest couple’s counseling if you suspect bipolar is ruining your relationship as bipolar in relationships can be quite difficult. However you react to signs the man you’re dating has bipolar, do it without judgment, and always listen to his point of view.

Practicing Good Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is one of the most important factors in coping with bipolar disorder. This means going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time, even on the weekends.

It is a good idea to avoid caffeine in the afternoon and stay away from screens before bed. That way, people can fall asleep more easily.

Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest triggers of manic and depressive episodes. If people with bipolar disorder are able to avoid sleep deprivation, they may be able to reduce the frequency of their episodes.

Romantic Relationships When You Have Bipolar Disorder
