How to Stop a Panic Attack Fast – How to overcome Anxiety and Panic attacks

When youre suffering from PTSD, panic attacks are so often you cant tell when youre actually having one. Youre in a constant state of fight or flight for months on end. Youre too scared to fall asleep and terrified while being awake. Eventually, when you do finally fall asleep, you wake up from nightmares that scare you awake. Sometimes they come as often as every ten minutes.

A social worker once told me that nightmares are the brains way of processing information. The best way to combat them is to say processing information every time you wake up from one. This little trick has helped desensitize nightmares over the long-term so you feel less panicked after waking up from one.

When To Use Medication

Sometimes, panic attacks cannot be managed entirely alone. If panic attacks become an ongoing concern or they cause significant anxiety or fear about future panic attacks, it might be necessary to see a therapist or doctor.

Types of therapeutic interventions that have been shown to have the best outcomes include cognitive behavioral therapy and humanistic therapy. CBT involves understanding the relationship between thoughts and behaviors and working toward changing negative or distorted thoughts to more positive, helpful ones.

One study found CBT to be between 85% and 90% successful in treating panic disorders.

Humanistic therapy is a type of intervention that helps people make rational decisions and accept responsibility for themselves. Common humanistic therapy approaches include client-centered therapy, gestalt therapy, and existential therapy.

If therapy alone is not effective in treating panic attacks, as may be the case in severe cases of panic disorders, medications may be recommended and prescribed by a psychiatrist. Commonly prescribed medications that have been shown to be effective in helping with panic disorders include antidepressants and benzodiazepines.

What Is A Panic Attack

Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear, panic, or anxiety. They are overwhelming, and they have physical as well as emotional symptoms.

If you have a panic attack, you might find you have difficulty breathing, you sweat profusely and tremble, and you may feel your heart pounding.

Some people will also experience chest pain and a feeling of detachment from reality or themselves during a panic attack, so they may think theyre having a heart attack. Others have reported feeling like they are having a stroke.

Know The Signs Of A Panic Attack

“Often, when you don’t know the physiological signs of a panic attack you may feel more scared imagining you’re having a heart attack,” says Annie Wright, LMFT and the owner and clinical director of Evergreen Counseling. “Read up on the signs of a panic attack so you know what you’re dealing with.”

Dr. Rodriguez recommends scouring the Anxiety and Depression Association of America’s website, which covers all the symptoms:

  • Palpitations, pounding heart or accelerated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
  • Feelings of choking
  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint
  • Chills or heat sensations
  • Paresthesia
  • Derealization or depersonalization
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Fear of dying

Rodriguez adds that its critical to also get a physical exam to rule out other problems.

Finding Coping Strategies For Attacks

  • 1Learn about the root causes of panic. Panic attacks start in the central nervous system, which controls everything from your breathing and heartbeat to your perspiration and respiration. When your brain senses danger, it sends signals to the body through the cerebral cortex to mobilize a response. This happens automatically with the release of chemicals like adrenaline. The heart beats faster. Your breathing becomes rapid. You start to sweat. This “fight or flight” response is not always accurate, though. Learn more about anxiety, panic disorder, and the fight or flight response in books, articles, or online. You will discover that what you feel during a panic attack is very real and that you are not simply imagining things.XTrustworthy SourceHelpGuideNonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, evidence-based mental health and wellness resources.Go to source
  • 2Don’t be reactive. Some therapists advocate “accepting” a panic attack. Your fight or flight mechanism is powerful but not always right, and you are almost certainly in no real danger during an attack. Try to keep calm and assured if you feel an attack approaching.XExpert Source

Here is something you can try to treat the pre-described symptoms,

It is a series of simple breathing techniques aimed at helping your body override its natural fight-or-flight response .

The following may be performed sitting down, standing up, or lying down. You can do this whilst on a crowded commute into work, when youre in bed, during a stressful work meeting, or basically in any situation where it is safe to switch your attention to yourself for a few minutes.

To feel less panicky, do the following:

  • With your nose, take a slow and deep breath.
  • Then exhale with your mouth. It make take a few rounds of breathing to slow your inhale and exhale cycle this is totally normal.
  • If it is safe to do so, close your eyes with the next inhale.
  • Repeat this 5 times .
  • Again, through your nose, take a deep and slow breath but this time, do it over the course of 7 seconds.
  • Then hold your breath for 3 seconds.
  • Like before, exhale with your mouth but this time, exhale over the course of 7 seconds.
  • Repeat this slow inhale, hold, and exhale process for 10 cycles or until you begin to feel better.
  • This simple breathing exercise is effective because when you are feeling stressed, your breathing pattern changes. When we feel anxious, out natural physiological response is to breathe too much in short shallow bursts.

The above abdominal breathing exercise makes you conscious of how you are breathing.

    Can Home Remedies Help

While home remedies continue to be a trending topic in all aspects of health, its important not to trade in proven medications and therapies for natural versions.

At the same time, lifestyle measures will certainly help your overall mental health, including a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Its important to discuss the use of any herbs or supplements with your doctor. This includes fish oil.

While theres some that shows the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may support brain health and subsequent mental illnesses, more research needs to be done to conclude whether taking fish oil and how much can effectively treat mental health disorders.

Not all studies support the use of omega-3 fatty acids for psychosis and other mental health conditions.
