One of the tools that has helped me is knowing that even the most vicious panic attack cant kill me. Dr. Rodriguez recommends writing this fact down on an index card or in your phone to read when you feel one coming on. Panic attacks are not life-threatening, she says. Write this down. What Not To Say To Someone Suffering From A Panic Disorder

This is as important as what you should tell them, or maybe more. You should avoid anything that can worsen the situation. Here are some simple guidelines for donts.

Dont say:

  • Dont entertain negative thoughts.
  • You are just making this up.
  • Youre blowing it out of proportion.

Panic disorder is more common in teenagers than in younger children.

Panic attacks can be particularly hard for children and young people to deal with. Severe panic disorder may affect their development and learning.

As the person displays signs of improvement, you can:

  • Urge them to continue doing the same actions
  • Stay with them and help them with the recovery
  • Avoid speeding up the recovery process
  • Allow them to recover at their own pace
  • Stay calm during the entire episode. Dont panic.
  • All the while, be aware of your own feelings and reactions.
  • If you are feeling distressed, tell yourself that this will get over soon.
  • Take good care of yourself so that you will be in a position to help the other person.
