What Is Bipolar Disorder Manic Episodes Explained

Like depression, bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by shifts in energy, activity levels and concentration. The difference, however, is those with bipolar disorder experience alternating periods of depression and mania.

A manic episode typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months, according toKay Redfield Jamison, a professor of psychiatry at the John Hopkins School of Medicine. Common signs can include “extreme irritability and paranoia, grandiosity and euphoria, changing in thinking speaking a lot, very rapidly.”

“People get highly sociable and disruptive. People sleep much less, are much more activated in general. It’s a very high-energy state.” Jamison, who specializes in mood disorders, also has firsthand experience with bipolar disorder, writing about it in her book, “An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness.”

In some cases, manic episodes can also include elements of psychosis, such as delusions, which Corrigan explains are false, grandiose beliefs as well as visual or auditory hallucinations.

Some people may choose not to take medication for a number of reasons, so Wests choice isnt unconventional, but it also doesnt mean its a safe decision, as every case is different.

People with bipolar disorder may choose not take their medication because of various unpleasant side effects , preference for alternative treatments, and fear of addiction. However, nearly half of people who suffer with bipolar disorder do not take their medication which can lead to relapse, hospitalization, and increased risk of suicide.

Dont Make Assumptions About Someone Based On Their Diagnosis

Keep in mind that all mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, have a range of potential symptoms and severities. In other words, the way one person experiences mental illness may be different from the way someone else with a similar diagnosis experiences it. Dont assume that because one person experiences their disorder one way such as having a history of outbursts that this will be the case for everyone with the disorder.

Learn To Separate The Person From Their Behavior

Learning to view someones behavior during a manic episode separately from their true personality can be tricky. This can be challenging even for loved ones of a person with bipolar disorder, let alone for people who dont personally know anyone with this condition.

If someone with a known mental health condition is suddenly behaving in a way thats raising eyebrows, consider that the behavior may be the result of their condition. Although their behavior may seem bold, offensive, or inappropriate, there is a person underneath that behavior whos likely suffering.

Speaking Out About Bipolar Disorder

West took his time on Lettermans show to help draw attention to the stigma attached to mental health issues. He compared mental conditions to physical issues, stating, It is a health issue Its like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. And if someone has a sprained ankle, youre not going to push on him more.

West uses alternative treatment methods for his condition, but there are many treatment options available for people with bipolar disorder. There are ways to overcome the effects of bipolar disorder and lead a fulfilling, healthy life.

The musician also aims to raise awareness of bipolar disorder and remove peoples misconceptions about it and other mental health conditions. Its a health issue that has a strong stigma on it, and people are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way, West stated. By drawing attention to the stigma of bipolar disorder and other mental issues, West hopes people will see mental health conditions for what they are: health issues.

Research Shows Bipolar Disorder Is Stigmatized More Than Other Mental Illnesses Why

Depression and bipolar disorder are both mood disorders, but research shows that bipolar disorder is associated with more stigma meaning negative attitudes toward a person based on a notable characteristic, such as mental illness than other mood disorders like depression or anxiety disorders. In fact, according to one review published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, the stigma associated with bipolar disorder is along the same lines as the stigma tied to severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia.

Unfortunately, according to a systematic review also published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, less research has looked at bipolar-related stigma than stigma associated with other mental illnesses, including both depression and schizophrenia. This means more research is needed to fully understand and address stigma related to bipolar disorder.

In my experience working with people diagnosed with a variety of mental health conditions and their loved ones, a couple of things have stood out to me.

As a result, it may be easier for people to relate to or empathize with those with depression or anxiety than those with bipolar disorder. And instead of viewing the behavior of someone with bipolar disorder with care and compassion, a person may look on with judgment.

In other words, you dont need to totally understand something to be understanding.

Kanye West is opening up about a topic he rarely discusses his mental health. The rapper details his struggle with bipolar disorder in the new season of David Letterman’s Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.”

In a clip of the episode, which is set to drop Friday, Letterman asks West, “What is the mechanism that is malfunctioning or is taking a break in your brain, do you know?”

“I wouldn’t be able to explain that as much just because, you know, I’m not a doctor,” West replied. “I can just tell you what I’m feeling at the time, and I feel a heightened connection with the universe when I’m ramping up. It is a health issue. This it’s like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. And if someone has a sprained ankle, you’re not going to push on him more. With us, once our brain gets to a point of spraining, people do everything to make it worse.”

There are four different types of bipolar disorder, including bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, cyclothymic disorder, and unspecified bipolar disorder, which includes conditions that don’t fit into the other categories.

People with these disorders can have episodes that look much like depression , including feeling sad and worried, a loss of energy, sleeping too much, and suicidal thoughts.

Unlike depression, however, people with bipolar also have episodes of mania or hypomania . People experiencing mania may be more likely to engage in risky behavior, including spending money or having reckless sex, as well as have euphoria, high energy, little need for sleep, irritability, racing thoughts, rapid speech, and other symptoms. Less severe manic periods are known as hypomanic episodes.

Sometimes mania can include psychosis, which is a break with reality along with hallucinations and delusions that require hospitalization.

People can also experience a mixed state that includes high and low symptoms all at once. People with bipolar disorder are at elevated risk of substance abuse and suicide, and people are often prescribed medication to help control the episodes.
