Keep Lavender On Hand
Lavender is known for being soothing and stress-relieving. It can help your body relax. If you know youre prone to panic attacks, keep some lavender essential oil on hand and put some on your forearms when you experience a panic attack. Breathe in the scent.
Lavender should not be combined with benzodiazepines. This combination can cause intense drowsiness.
Four Ways To Treat Panic Attacks Without Medication
1. Keep yourself occupied
During an attack, your mind will focus on a situation or object that causing the sensation of fear. And because you are focusing on this sensation, the symptoms become more severe and extensive. The best you can do at this point is to distract your mind. You can do something creative like writing or drawing. In addition, you can go biking or play your favorite sport with a friend.
2. Follow an exercise
Whats the connection between panic attacks and exercise? For one, physical activity helps in the production of hormones that counteract the symptoms of anxiety or depression. Activities like jogging or lifting weights release hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphin which are known to improve mood.
3. Regulate your caffeine and sugar intake
Caffeine and sugar can amplify the effects of a panic attack. Consuming too much of these can put your body on overdrive and worsen palpitations. It also causes hypersensitivity which can increase the frequency of attacks. As much as possible, be mindful of the amount of coffee or sweets you are eating each day.
4. Talk to someone
If you are going through a difficult anxiety episode, its always best to talk to someone who represents security and peace of mind. It can be a loved one or a friend. Whichever the case, opening up about how the attack is affecting you can help lessen the symptoms.

The End Of Everything: What A Panic Attack Feels Like
Only 16, Caroline, had her first panic attack a year ago. Her mother was dropping her off at her summer job at a local school when, without warning, a full-blown panic attack engulfed her. My heart started racing and my body felt so hot. I started to sweat and shake uncontrollably. My vision became distorted and my body felt limp, like a wet noodle, she says. For 20 minutes, until the panic attacked passed, Caroline refused to get out of the car. Her mother didnt know what to do.
Kirstie Craine Ruiz, 46, has lived with anxiety, panic attacks, and panic disorder for about ten years. For a long time, she had full-blown attacks 2-3 nights a week. I would usually awake to a racing heart or the feeling of my heart expanding in my chestas it might explodeFrom there, I would begin to panic and my heart would go even fasterand my body would shake so hard that it felt like I was having a convulsion. I could barely breathe and was usually pretty sure I was having a heart attack and that I was going to die. Sometimes Id go the ER and theyd hold me overnight because my heart would be going so fast and they couldnt get it to go down.
Less Feel Sorry For Yourself And Do Not Identify Yourself With Your Fear
No need to think about how bad you feel, what a heavy fate came your way, how you suffer, etc. The fight against the PA requires some courage, and even some self-denial. While the pity for yourself leads to obsession with your illnesses , and only aggravates your suffering, into which fire you pour the oil of pity. Yes, you feel bad, but are you unable to cope with it? Remember, panic attack is just a certain physiological configuration of your body, one of many at which you feel some discomfort, and nothing more. Endure it as a headache, which will surely pass.
Do not identify yourself with panic and fear that occur during the panic attack. This fear is not a part of your personality. This fear is an illusion and deception. This is the way the panic disorder manifests itself.

Finding The Right Medication For You Takes Time
If you and your doctor decide to try an SSRI, remember that figuring out which SSRI works best for you can be a long process . This is because many people need to try different dosages and allow adequate time to pass in order to really tell if the medication is working properly. Some important factors that determine whether the medication is right for you include:
- potential drug interactions with other medications you are taking
All SSRIs are generally equivalent in terms of effectiveness. However, it’s difficult to predict which SSRI will be effective for you or what type of side effects you may experience because every individual reacts differently. Also, certain medications that you are already taking might limit your choice of SSRI. The most commonly prescribed SSRIs are all available in generic forms and may be covered by your insurance.
Get Plenty Of Exercise
Working out is probably one of the last things you feel like doing when running on overdrive, but years of research have suggested that good old fashioned exercise is a great way to burn off anxious energy.
The fact is, physical activity has been shown to raise endorphins and serotonin levels. This has the benefit of making you feel better emotionally. Also, exercise may help to take your mind off of racing or obsessive thoughts,
Try aiming for at least 30 minutes of exercise for three to five days a week. Your workouts dont need to be physically intense either, any type of movement is good movement!

What Do I Do If Im Having A Panic Attack
With or without panic disorder, panic attacks are common. And theres a big misconception around dealing with them, Gruner explains.
The most common advice people hear when theyre experiencing a panic attack is to take deep breaths, think positively, and try to calm down, he says.
However, trying to control anxiety in these ways can backfire. Struggling to prevent a panic attack can have a paradoxical effect and actually cause a panic attack.
During a panic attack, a person should do the counterintuitive thing: let go of control and allow the panic attack to run its course.
It can also be useful to remind yourself that you cant die from a panic attack, and that its your bodys normal, natural reaction, which is not dangerous.

Tell Yourself Youre Just Processing Information
When youre suffering from PTSD, panic attacks are so often you cant tell when youre actually having one. Youre in a constant state of fight or flight for months on end. Youre too scared to fall asleep and terrified while being awake. Eventually, when you do finally fall asleep, you wake up from nightmares that scare you awake. Sometimes they come as often as every ten minutes.
A social worker once told me that nightmares are the brains way of processing information. The best way to combat them is to say processing information every time you wake up from one. This little trick has helped desensitize nightmares over the long-term so you feel less panicked after waking up from one.
Aromatherapy And Essential Oils
Heres a fun one. If you find yourself struggling to relax at home and take your mind off things, consider looking into aromatherapy or an essential oils diffuser. We know this may seem like a hoax, but the ever-increasing popularity of this concept in addition to some recent scientific research seems to suggest that there is something to it.
According to one 2012 study, which tested the effects of lavender aromatherapy on middle aged women with insomnia, suggested that the soothing scent of lavender oil reduced short-term heart rate and eased long-term sleep issues.

Keep Track Of Your Doses
While SSRIs aren’t habit-forming, benzodiazepines are known to be highly addictive. Because of this, it’s important to be honest with your doctor if you find that you have been using them more often or at higher doses than prescribed. Hopefully, your doctor creates a safe, non-judgmental environment for you to feel like you can be candid about your concerns. If not, find a doctor you can trust to discuss this issue. Additionally, suddenly stopping benzodiazepines can be dangerous and potentially fatal. Your doctor can design a plan to decrease your dose safely, connect you with support and resources, and discuss alternative, non-addictive medications that can be effective in treating your panic disorder.
From finding a good therapist to understanding the available treatment options, trying to sort through all the parts of getting help for your panic disorder can be tricky. Keeping these tips in mind can help you navigate your path to getting better, encouraging you to stay informed and engaged in the process.

Approach To The Patient
Until research better determines which subset of patients will spontaneously remit, physicians should treat all patients who meet the DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder, particularly those whose quality of life is affected by social avoidance or agoraphobia. Antidepressants alone are highly effective in reducing attacks and improving function, with SSRIs and TCAs showing equal efficacy. Each class of antidepressant has side effects, and patients adherence to therapy varies based on their tolerance of those effects. Antidepressant therapy should continue for at least six months after the patient is symptom-free. When the antidepressant is discontinued, the patient should be followed closely to detect recurrence of anxiety symptoms before they become debilitating.27

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors And Selective Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors
Due to their positive benefit/risk balance, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors . During the first 2 weeks, adverse effects may be stronger. Initial jitteriness or an increase in anxiety symptoms may occur, which may reduce the patients’ treatment compliance. Lowering the starting dose of the antidepressants may reduce these adverse effects. A review of studies in depressed patients suggested that SNRIs may be less well tolerated than the SSRIs. However, according to clinical experience, tolerability may differ among patients, and it is also possible that an individual patient may experience less adverse effects when switched from an SSRI to an SNRI.
Some SSRIs and SNRIs are inhibitors of cytochrome P450 enzymes and hence may interact with other psychopharmacological drugs and medications for medical illnesses. After stopping treatment with an SSRI, withdrawal reactions may occur. However, these are much less frequent and severe than the withdrawal reactions observed after terminating benzodiazepine treatment. These adverse reactions may be more frequent with paroxetine than with sertraline or fluoxetine.

You should sleep on a regular basis, go to bed and wake up around the same time, get enough sleep, do not sleep too much! In fact, the sleep schedule strongly determines your health and mood. You should not neglect it. Do not treat it simply as prevention! Your sleep can have a big impact on the course of your illness.

Panic Disorder In Children
Panic disorder is more common in teenagers than in younger children.
Panic attacks can be particularly hard for children and young people to deal with. Severe panic disorder may affect their development and learning.
If your child has the signs and symptoms of panic disorder, they should see a GP.
After taking a detailed medical history the GP will carry out a thorough physical examination to rule out any physical causes for the symptoms.
They may refer your child to a specialist for further assessment and treatment. The specialist may recommend a course of CBT for your child.
Screening for other anxiety disorders may also be needed to help find the cause of your child’s panic attacks.
