What Is A Social Phobia
Shyness is a common sort of mild fear if it’s mild, it doesn’t really spoil life.
Many of us get a bit worried before meeting new people but find that, once we are with them, we can cope and even enjoy the situation.
A phobia is also a fear. We all have fears about things such as heights and spiders but, for most of us, they don’t really stop us from doing what we want to do.
A fear becomes a phobia when it stops us from enjoying things or doing them easily.
If you have a social phobia, you get very anxious when you are with other people, usually because you worry that:

What Is A Social Situation
A social situation includes any situation in which you and at least 1 other person are present. Social situations tend to fall into 2 main categories: performance situations and interpersonal interactions.
These are situations where people feel they are being observed by others. Examples include:
- Public speaking (e.g. presenting at a meeting
- Participating in meetings or classes
- Eating in front of others
- Using public washrooms
- Writing in front of others
- Performing in public
- Entering a room where everyone is already seated
These are situations where people are interacting with others and developing closer relationships. Examples include:
- Meeting new people
- Talking to co-workers or friends
- Inviting others to do things
- Going to social events
- Working in a group
- Ordering food at a restaurant
- Returning something at a store
- Having a job interview
Note: It is not uncommon for people to fear some social situations and feel quite comfortable in others. For example, some people are comfortable spending time with friends and family, and interacting socially with co-workers but are very fearful of performance situations, such as participating in business meetings or giving formal speeches. Also, some people fear only a single situation , while others fear and avoid a wide range of social situations.
Can Anxiety Disorders Be Prevented
You cant prevent anxiety disorders. But you can take steps to control or reduce your symptoms:
- Check out medications: Talk to a healthcare provider or pharmacist before taking over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies. Some of these contain chemicals that may make anxiety symptoms worse.
- Limit caffeine: Stop or limit how much caffeine you consume, including coffee, tea, cola and chocolate.
- Live a healthy lifestyle: Exercise regularly and eat a healthy, balanced diet.
- Seek help: Get counseling and support if you experienced a traumatic or disturbing event. Doing so can help prevent anxiety and other unpleasant feelings from disrupting your life.

What Is Selective Mutism
Some kids and teens are so extremely shy and so fearful about talking to others, that they donât speak at all to some people or in certain places . This form of social phobia is sometimes called selective mutism.
People with selective mutism can talk. They have completely normal conversations with the people theyâre comfortable with or in certain places. But other situations cause them such extreme anxiety that they may not be able to bring themselves to talk at all.
Some people might mistake their silence for a stuck-up attitude or rudeness. But with selective mutism and social phobia, silence stems from feeling uncomfortable and afraid, not from being uncooperative, disrespectful, or rude.
How Are Anxiety Disorders Diagnosed

What You Feeland What Others See
If you have social anxiety disorder, you probably think your anxiety is obvious for all to seein fact, looking anxious is another thing kids with social anxiety are afraid of. But other people might not recognize it. Thats because a lot of the symptoms of anxiety are happening under the surface. You might be having panicked thoughts and feeling some of the physical symptoms of anxietylike a racing heart or an upset stomachbut other people probably arent going to pick up on that. More visible signs like blushing can be a clue, but even blushing tends to be something people pay more attention to when it is happening to themselves.
Because kids with social anxiety disorder are afraid of doing anything that is embarrassing, Dr. Busman adds, they can be experts at hiding how they really feel. One of the girls Ive worked with had panic attacks and was very highly anxious. Because I know her pretty well, Id know that if she looked at the floor and was quiet that meant she was feeling anxious. But other people dont notice that, and can only assume by what they see.

Although there is a lot you can do to support yourself, its also okay to ask for help. Talking therapy can help a lot, and if you need it you can also get medication that helps.
Find a counsellor or therapist or a psychologist or a clinical psychologist and talk to your doctor about whether medication would help you. It can be helpful to ask if the health professional is trained in cognitive behaviour therapy, as this is currently the treatment of choice for social anxiety.

Behavioral Inhibition In Childhood
Do you know a toddler or young child who always becomes extremely upset when confronted with a new situation or unfamiliar person? When faced with these types of situations does the child cry, withdraw, or seek the comfort of a parent?
This type of behavior in toddlers and young children is known as behavioral inhibition. Children who show behavioral inhibition as a toddler are at greater risk for developing SAD later in life.
Because this temperament shows up at such a young age, it is likely an inborn characteristic and the result of biological factors.
If you are concerned that your child is excessively withdrawn or fearful in new situations, it may be helpful to discuss your worries with a professional. Since we know that behaviorally inhibited toddlers are more likely to become socially anxious children and socially phobic adults, any kind of early intervention may help prevent more serious problems later in life.
