Does Your Anxiety Make You Feel Like Throwing Up?! (Emetophobia: Learn how to get rid of it)!

You should go to the ER if you have any of these signs of a more serious problem:

  • Severe abdominal pain, particularly if it occurs suddenly or if it starts as general pain and then becomes more specific
  • Chest or abdominal pain that radiates to your jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm or is associated with dizziness, sweating, or difficulty breathing
  • Vomit that includes blood or a substance that looks like coffee grounds
  • Bloody or black diarrhea

What Is Dry Heaving

Essentially, dry heaving or retching is the body attempting to throw up without any actual vomit.

When you dry heave, your diaphragm and abdominal walls contract, closing off your airway, expanding the lungs, and preparing your body to upheave contents from the stomach through the esophagus. You may experience gagging, feelings of nausea, and other sensations related to vomiting.

In some cases, retching can lead to actual vomiting, though in many cases the body lacks the actual substance needed to regurgitate. The brain may continue to send signals to empty the stomach, despite the stomach already being empty. In these cases, retching can become a very irritating and uncomfortable sensation that continues without the relief thats normally felt after vomiting.

Nausea can be caused by multiple issues that may or may not be related to anxiety, including changes in neurotransmitter levels, stress to the gut, blurry eyes, and more. Anxiety can also make a person more sensitive to feelings of nausea, so mild nausea feels more intense. Walking, drinking water, and light eating can be helpful, but anxiety reduction will be the only way to stop anxiety-related nausea.

Treatments And Coping Methods

In most cases, anxiety is not a cause for concern because it is part of the bodys natural response to stress, threat, or danger.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America offer several tips for managing everyday stress and anxiety. These include:

  • Taking time to relax: Activities such as yoga, meditation, and listening to music can help a person reduce their stress levels.
  • Trying to maintain a positive attitude: People can practice replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.
  • Getting plenty of sleep: The human body needs additional rest during times of stress.
  • Exercising daily: Daily exercise releases chemicals called endorphins, which can relax a person and lift their mood. Exercise can also help by promoting sleep.
  • Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake: These can aggravate anxiety and may even trigger panic attacks in some people.
  • Talking to someone: A person may find it helpful to talk to a trusted friend or family member about their anxiety.

The ADAA recommend that people experiencing an episode of anxiety try taking slow, deep breaths in and out, as well as counting to ten slowly and repeating this as necessary.

Some people who experience anxiety find it beneficial to understand their specific triggers. Triggers are situations or events that can bring about episodes of anxiety.

Symptoms Of Emetophobia Can Include:

  • Avoiding seeing vomiting on TV or in movies
  • Obsessing over the location of bathrooms
  • Avoiding all bad-smelling things
  • Avoiding hospitals or sick people
  • Inability to describe or hear words like vomit
  • Excessive preemptive use of antacids
  • Avoiding places where youve felt sick
  • Avoiding eating food away from home2

No one enjoys becoming sick, but its the excessive avoiding and fear that characterize emetophobia. When a persons daily life is severely interrupted by this fear, then it is diagnosable as a specific phobia. Excessive worry about vomiting also can lead to the very symptoms a person is trying to avoid, such as nausea. When people began to recognize that anxiety is at work rather than a stomach bug or a bad food, they can learn that they are unlikely to vomit even though they might feel that they will.

My Dog Gets Sick When We Travel What Causes This

Motion sickness in dogs is a common problem. Motion or car sickness is more common in younger dogs than adults. The reason may be due to the fact that the parts of the inner ear involved in balance are not fully developed. Puppies will often outgrow motion sickness by the time they are about 1 year old.

Many adult dogs become anxious or even nauseous during travel due to a lack of conditioning and the overwhelming unusual stimuli associated with moving inside a vehicle. Dogs that travel only once or twice a year are not used to car rides and often associate the car ride with the stressful experience that follows.

This causes heightened anxiety and stress, and may result in vomiting and diarrhea. Puppies that experience traumatic or frightening first rides may also associate future travel with that stressful event. Some dogs may have medical conditions such as middle or inner ear infections or vestibular disease that predispose them to nausea. Others may be taking medications that can cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Helping your dog overcome the stress and anxiety of travel will mean that your pet can accompany you on trips more frequently and will allow you to spend more time together.

How Anxiety Causes Nausea

Stress and anxiety are often linked as the latter can be caused by stress and can create it. But there are also ways in which anxiety can lead to nausea independently of stress. They include the following:

  • Anxiety can make someone “hypersensitive” to the way their body feels. This means they give more attention to the body. When you become hypersensitive, a small amount of “normal” nausea that you otherwise could ignore can feel like severe nausea that is difficult to control.
  • Anxiety is a known trigger of and contributor to issues like motion sickness, so some people with anxiety tend to have worse nausea during car rides and similar movement.
  • Anxiety may change the bodys levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin. Serotonin also plays a role in the reactions of the gut. Thus, it is possible for changes in these neurotransmitters levels in the brain to trigger nausea signals in the gut.

Of course, anxiety itself also causes and is caused by stress, so all of the stress responses are similar to the responses of those that have frequent or chronic anxiety.

Causes And Associated Symptoms

Anxiety Makes Me Throw Up TWICE a Day!

Nausea and vomiting can occur for several reasons.

  • Arterial tension drops. Due to the stress, people often have ups and downs in blood pressure, which can lead to nausea and vomiting. With increased blood pressure , when adrenaline is released into the blood and the work of the entire cardiovascular system increases, a person faces vomit from anxiety, tachycardia, tinnitus, headache, pulsation in the temples. In hypotension, when the vessels dilate and the passage of blood through the capillaries becomes difficult, patients often feel drowsiness, dizziness and lethargy in addition to nausea.
  • Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Many patients with unstable nervous system suffer from problems with stomach and intestines. For example, stressful overstrain of the abdominal muscles causes pain and cramps in the stomach. Increased sensitivity of the intestine and violation of the natural balance of digestive function lead to discomfort in the stomach and diarrhea. All this, as a rule, can be accompanied by severe nausea and vomit from anxiety and stress.
  • Cough. Sometimes patients have dry mouth because of the anxiety. This is due to the fact that the muscles involved in the process of swallowing are strongly strained, and the salivary glands are compressed. This provokes a strong thirst and desire to cough to clear the throat. Prolonged cough, in turn, can provoke tension in the chest, a feeling of compression of the throat and vomiting.

How Can I Prevent Motion Sickness In My Dog

Desensitizing or counter-conditioning your dog to car travel may take some work, but it can be accomplished. Helping your dog overcome the stress and anxiety of travel will mean that he can accompany you on trips more frequently and will allow you to spend more time together.

The best way to ease your dogs travel anxiety is by taking several short trips before embarking on a long haul. Start by simply placing your dog in your car, starting the motor, and sitting there without moving for a few minutes. The next day, repeat this process, but back out of your driveway and then return. Be sure to praise your dog and offer a food reward for good behavior. Next, try a trip around the block. Gradually work your way up to riding comfortably for 20 to 30 minutes.

“The best way to ease your dogs travel anxiety is by taking several short trips before embarking on a long haul.”

Here are additional tips to make your dogs travel more enjoyable and reduce motion sickness:

Withhold food 12 hours before travel. An empty stomach will help reduce nausea and the need for frequent potty breaks that are often unwelcome, especially during long car rides or airplane or train travel. Be sure to provide access to fresh water whenever possible. Water bottles that hang on the carriers door are a good option for many pets.

Use a carrier or dog safety harness. Anxious dogs can both hurt themselves and cause accidents. A carrier is often viewed as a safe place for many dogs.

There Are Some Immediate Remedies For Anxiety Nausea And Vomiting:

    • The best remedy is to keep yourself calm: Keeping yourself calm can end an active stress response and its changes. This will allow your stomach and digestive system to return to normal functioning, which will allow the body to naturally process the contents in the stomach. If you keep yourself calm, you’ll notice that the nausea feeling passing in time, and therefore, needn’t be an issue. Keeping yourself calm can also prevent vomiting. The calmer you keep yourself, the easier the nausea and vomiting feelings will pass. Remember, no one has to vomit due to anxiety or stress caused nausea. By keeping yourself calm, you can decide whether you want to vomit or not. The choice is up to you.
    • When your stomach or digestive system is upset, we can expel the contents in one of two ways: Through the mouth or the anus. If you are in a hurry to expel the contents, vomiting is the fastest way. If you’d rather not vomit, you don’t have to. Keeping yourself calm will allow your body to process the contents and expel them naturally through the elimination tract.
    • Distracting yourself can allow nausea and vomiting to pass uneventfully: The body will naturally breakdown and eliminate the stomach contents if you choose to not react to how nausea feels, and then give your body time to process the contents. You can do that by distracting yourself in the meantime. Focusing on how you feel will magnify the nausea feelings, while being distracted can minimize the feelings of nausea.

Stress Anxiety Vomiting And Stomachache: What You Can Do

If you or your child suffers frequent stomachaches or nausea, first see a doctor to rule out any physical cause. Physical causes — bacteria, a virus, acid reflux, lactose intolerance, constipation — are usually behind the stomachaches and vomiting of younger children.

    Continued

Its beyond toddlerhood when you tend to get into the stress-triggered abdominal complaints, says Chris Tolcher, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician and clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine.

Once youve ruled out physical causes, take a close look at how you or your child react to stressful situations.

We all know that our mind influences our body, and vice versa. The science of emotion and stress is starting to catch up with our intuitive understanding of this, Dennis says.

Therapy can help children and adults. But, often theres no need for a therapist. Learning how to regulate emotions more effectively also helps.

The key may be to learn how to look for the silver lining in each emotionally challenging situation before we have an emotional reaction, Dennis says.

For example, perhaps an upcoming job interview or school test would normally make you or your child anxiously fear failure. This fear leads to a cascade of negative emotions, stress, and physical distress. Instead, try to see the situation in a more positive light: An opportunity to share your expertise or enthusiasm, or to learn.
