Does Prozac Change Your Personality

Best Antidepressant For Performance Anxiety

People taking Prozac or other anti-depressants may experience personality changes for a range of reasons: The stress of waiting for improvement may worsen their mental state or the anti-depressant may produce symptoms of a different, undiagnosed mental illness. Finally, depressed people often abuse drugs and alcohol.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

These include fluoxetine , paroxetine , sertraline , fluvoxamine , citalopram , and escitalopram . They tend to be the first line choice for multiple anxiety disorders and depression. They are technically classified as antidepressants .

Sertraline is FDA approved for multiple conditions including: Major Depression, OCD, PTSD, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. While not all SSRIs have this many FDA approved indications, we often use the other ones for the same conditions. Pharmacy companies do not always bother pursuing FDA approvals due to cost reasons and the realization that the meds will be used off-label. It is completely legal and ethical to use medications for off-label purposes, but ideally the patient and provider should have a discussion about this first.

While SSRIs can have an immediate effect, the full effect can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks depending on the person. They are generic and cheap. I tend to prefer generic meds b/c they have been around longer with a proven track record, and the risks are known too . This is my style, and there is certainly nothing wrong with those who do prescriber newer meds .

While they are overall fairly well tolerated and arguably with less side effects than older classes of antidepressants, some people may be more sensitive to side effects of this class and may do better with older classes like tricyclic antidepressants or MAOIs .

Did you taper off of your meds slowly? Ive been trying different psychiatric meds for MANY MANY years, including Effexor, Elavil, Prozac, Neurontin , Ativan, Klonopin , Adderall , Amitriptyline, and many many others and so long as I taper off of them, I dont have ANY problems with withdrawals. None. Now when I forget/skip doses, or long time ago when I stupidly just STOPPED taking half my meds, yeah I had some bad withdrawals. Theres a reason why you need to taper off of psych meds and your psych provider can guide you in how to do that properly. If theyre an idiot, you can find out online how to taper off properly. But ALWAYS taper off of psych meds!! Physiological meds usually dont need tapering but psych meds do.

Naturally occurring chemicals in the brain, known as neurotransmitters, are responsible for various bodily functions. These chemical messengers are believed to be imbalanced for those with mental health conditions.

Antidepressants work to restabilize certain neurotransmitters.

Pristiq specifically impacts the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, both of which are thought to be dysregulated in people with panic disorder. Serotonin influences many functions including your mood and sleep regulation.

Norepinephrine is connected to the fight-or-flight response, which is the way you react to stress and anxiety. Pristiq can help bring equilibrium to these two neurotransmitters, leading to reduced anxiety, less severe panic attacks, and enhanced mood.

Lets Get Specific: Which Ssri/snri Medications Are Best For Which Anxiety Conditions

What does it mean to be FDA approved? Before they can be marketed, prescription medicines must go through an extensive approval process to prove that they work and that their benefits outweigh their risks. It takes an average of 12 years for a new drug to hit the pharmacy shelves, and hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on research, development, and clinical trials. Note that the FDA does not actually perform testing it only reviews the testing process.

The FDAs decision to approve a medication is supported by reliable scientific data. A long, detailed document accompanies every FDA-approved prescription drug, referred to as the package insert or label. The approved label provides key information about the medication that includes the specific conditions that the drug is approved to treat as well as dosage and safety info.

Healthcare providers may choose to prescribe a medication for an off-label or unapproved use when they judge that it is medically appropriate for their patients. Off-label prescribing is very common for the treatment of various types of anxiety disorders but typically not before trying first-line options.

    Antipsychotics For Ordinary Depression

“I’m taking an antidepressant, but I’m still not where I want to be with my symptoms.”

If that line sounds familiar, it’s because you might have heard it in recent television commercials for the powerful psychiatric drug aripiprazole . Originally approved to treat the disabling mental illnesses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Abilify is now, with permission from the Food and Drug Administration, being pitched to people with depression who haven’t gotten relief from milder drugs such as SSRIs.

In December 2009, Abilify’s competitor quetiapine succeeded in winning the same approval as an add-on for depression.

The mass marketing of hard-core psychiatric drugs is worrisome, said Julie Donohue, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. “People might think from the commercial that everybody’s going to get better, when really it’s a minority of patients who respond to the treatment,” she said.

Another issue is that the studies conducted to secure Abilify’s approval as a depression add-on lasted only six weeks. “That means we don’t know the long-term benefits or harms of the drug for this use, which is a problem because people will take Abilify for monthsand probably years,” said Steven Woloshin, M.D., a professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.

Something else the ads don’t mention is the cost of the drugs: up to 45 times as much as many antidepressants.

    Bottom line

    Selective Serotonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors

Why use an SNRI for anxiety disorder when norepinephrine is stimulating?

Both SSNRI and SSRI medications affect serotonin levels, but SSNRI drugs also impact the level of norepinephrine, another neurotransmitter that may affect mood. This type of medication is helpful for those who have extreme fatigue associated with depression, or who have had side effects or poor response to SSRI drugs.

What Other Treatments Can Help Manage Anxiety

Medications for anxiety are safe and effective and are good options for many people. But some people want to avoid medication, and some want to combine medication with other treatments. You can try:

    • Psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a first-line treatment for anxiety, and phobias can respond to biofeedback and exposure therapy.
    • Stress management techniques. You can learn breathing techniques and progressive muscle relaxation to reduce anxiety.
    • Lifestyle modifications. Getting enough quality sleep, exercising, and avoiding alcohol, illicit drugs and excessive caffeine can help reduce anxiety.
    • Support groups. Connecting with people who share your experiences can be valuable.

What Causes Depression Medications To Stop Working

Multiple factors can change the way your body responds to an antidepressant, including:

    • Drug or alcohol use. Illicit drug use and alcohol can cause strong mood changes, which can make antidepressants ineffective.
    • Pregnancy. Your body’s weight and blood volume increase when you’re pregnant. Talk to your doctor about taking antidepressants while pregnant, and about potentially adjusting your dosage to continue relieving symptoms.
    • New stressors. A new stressful situation at home or work can result in a mood response for which the antidepressant can’t compensate.
    • Other medications. Interactions between antidepressants and medications for other health conditions can affect how well an antidepressant works.

Most often, though, antidepressants stop working for what seems to be no reason. “There’s no good research that shows why a medication may stop working for someone,” says Nestadt. “I think it’s less an issue of building up tolerance and more likely constantly changing stressors and factors in the brain.”

There are several classes of antidepressants within each class there are many individual medications. While all antidepressants work well overall, no drug or type of drug works equally well for everyone who takes it. You may be advised to try more than one type of antidepressant or to use a combination of antidepressants to seek relief from your distress.

The different types of antidepressants are listed in the order in which they are most commonly prescribed. Medications are referred to in two ways: by their generic name and by their brand or trade names. Brand names available in Canada appear in brackets.

    SSRIs

This group of drugs, including fluoxetine , paroxetine , fluvoxamine , citalopram , escitalopram and sertraline , is usually the first choice for treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Readers Reveal The Therapists And Drugs That Helped

An estimated 14 percent of Americans will experience a serious bout of depression during their lifetime, and 20 percent will experience an anxiety disorder. The ubiquitous advertisements for antidepressant drugs suggest that pills are the only answerand that they work for everyone. Neither is really true, but you don’t have to take our word for it: We surveyed more than 1,500 respondents toConsumer Reports‘ 2009 Annual Questionnaire who had sought professional help for depression, anxiety, or both.

Our results provide a window onto mental-health treatment as it’s practiced in the real world, as opposed to the carefully controlled environment of clinical trials of psychiatric drugs.

    Among our key findings:

    Talk therapy helps

Respondents to our survey who stuck with talk therapy for just a little whileat least seven sessionsreported as much improvement as those who only took medication .

    Some drugs have an edge

People who took medications from the SSRI class of antidepressantswhich includes citalopram , fluoxetine , sertraline , and their generic equivalentsreported lower rates of side effects than those taking SNRIs, a newer, often more expensive class of antidepressants that includes venlafaxine and duloxetine . Yet patients found SSRI treatment at least as helpful.

    Anxiety rises

    Side effects shift

    Type of therapist doesn’t matter

Psychologists , social workers , and licensed professional counselors received equal helpfulness ratings from those who had talk therapy.
