Good Doctor’s Christina Chang Weighs In On Lim’s Ptsd And That Final Scene

The Good Doctors winter premiere culminated in a brutal wake-up call for Dr. Audrey Lim.

The ABC medical drama, which exists in a post-COVID world, explored the emotional fallout from the pandemic through the eyes of St. Bonaventures chief of surgery, who was determined to bury her feelings and go about her life, business as usual. But it was clear as she lashed out at Jordan and Shaun that she was not OK.

After she treated Ben , an Iraq war veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder, Lim went for a joy ride and crashed her motorcycle. Though she walked away from the wreckage with nary a scratch, it was obvious that she could no longer ignore her own PTSD.

Below, Lims portrayer, Christina Chang, discusses Lims reluctance to seek help and the additional underlying trauma associated with you-know-whos death, and previews how Lims crash will impact the character moving forward.

TVLINE|What sort of thoughts are running through Lims mind in the immediate aftermath of the crash? Theres the initial shock that it happened because shes never crashed . I dont even think she physically feels anything when she gets up off the ground. That was an amazing stunt, by the way. The stuntman stood right up, and he had a slight limp, so I chose to give Lim a limp as well. She looks like a superhero jumping up after that.

Cannabis As A Treatment For Ptsd

The belief that cannabis can be used to treat PTSD is primarily based on anecdotal evidence from individuals with PTSD who report that cannabis helps with their symptoms or improves their overall life and functioning. Randomized controlled trials , which are a necessary “gold standard” for determining safety and efficacy, are needed to test the use of whole plant cannabis to treat PTSD. There has only been 1 RCT comparing whole plant cannabis and placebo for treating PTSD . This trial included 2 phases. The first phase compared effects of 3 active cannabis preparations and placebo on PTSD symptoms in 80 U.S. military Veterans. Results showed no significant difference in PTSD symptom reduction between placebo and any of the active cannabis preparations. In the second phase, 74 Veterans were re-randomized to receive 1 of 3 active cannabis preparations. Results showed a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms in the THC+CBD group only however, because there was no placebo group in this phase, it is not possible to draw conclusions about the efficacy of cannabis to treat PTSD from these results.

Preliminary studies suggest that oral CBD might decrease anxiety in those with and without clinical anxiety . This work has led to the development and testing of CBD treatments for individuals with social anxiety and PTSD .

Active Ingredients And Route Of Administration

The cannabis plant contains a variety of components , most notably delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol , which is the primary psychoactive compound. The potency of cannabis can vary substantially. For example, the percentage of THC in the cannabis plant can range in strength from less than 1% to well over 30% based upon strain and cultivation methods. In general, the potency of THC in the cannabis plant has increased as much as 10-fold over the past 40 years . In addition to THC, the cannabis plant contains numerous other cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol , cannabinol , and cannabigerol . The effects of cannabis use appear to vary as a function of both the concentration of cannabinoids in the plant and the ratios between concentrations of different cannabinoids .

In addition to whole plant cannabis, a variety of cannabis extract products have been produced and sold in recent years, such as waxes, tinctures and oils. The concentration of THC in these products can be as high as 90%. Thus, an individual could unknowingly consume a very high dose of THC in one administration, which increases the risk of an adverse reaction .

Is Christina Chang Leaving The Good Doctor

Actress Chang has discussed how the pandemic has affected Lim and what it will mean for her in the future.

She explained to TV Guide: “Part of Lims struggle is being vulnerable, which I think is made clear in this episode. Shes got quite a large role , and shes in charge of a lot of staff, so its not OK in her mind to have any kind of issue.

“The first part of this episode is her just feeling like, ‘Look, Im tired, Im overrun, but everybody is. I have a lot on my plate, but everybody does. Every hospital, head of hospital and chief of surgery, everybody is feeling this. I am not unique, I am not special, I am holding it together.'”

Everyones An Expert Claire Ben Rose Zoe Dr Lim

But the stress doesnt end there. On her way to work, with her speeding in an effort to drown out her thoughts, she comes across a veteran named Ben who has vivid flashbacks due to his time in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was hit by a car and Dr. Lim takes responsibility for him at the hospital, with Claires assistance.

As this happens, Dr. Lim encounters a woman named Rose who claims to be such an empath she can feel Dr. Lims stress to the point of her blood pressure rising. Roses mumbo jumbo makes Dr. Lim very uncomfortable so she tries to avoid her at all cost. Yet, with the warning about her stress, and the ringing in her ears, maybe Rose is right?

However, Dr. Lim doesnt have time to question her mental and emotional state with so many patients and nowhere near enough time to treat them all. This is why she tries her best to leave them in the hands of her employees but when some like Claire want to try procedures that go beyond their scope of care Lim pushes back. After all, it was only a few months ago elective surgeries were on a case by case basis. So while Claire has found one which could treat Bens PTSD, maybe give him a normal life with his partner, Zoe, Lim isnt originally down for it.

That is until Ben seems on the verge of suicide because of the guilt from missing an IED and countless lives dying in the process. With that in mind, Lim allows the surgery and it seems to help.

The Good Doctor Review: Lim

Please note that this review will discuss topics such as PTSD, suicide, and abortion. If you are sensitive to any of these topics, I would suggest skipping this weeks episode.

The Good Doctor returns from its holiday hiatus the strongest its been this season, slowing down and taking time to dive into Lims emotional state. The Good Doctor Season 4 Episode 6, Lim, shows how shes managed to continue on despite recent traumas such as the COVID crisis and the loss of Melendez.

One highlight of The Good Doctors fourth season is how the drama better utilizes Lim, whether this happened to be a consequence of Melendezs death or the reason behind it. Even though the decision to remove Melendez from the series is a wildly unpopular one among fans, Christina Chang knocks it out of the park in this episode, and many times steals the moment with her unique perspective.

The Good Doctor is at its best when diving into deep emotional arcs of the main and supporting characters, but Lim, does more than just emotional exploration, it also provides a balance with comedy, Shaun drama, and interesting cases.

Lim finds the Chief of Surgery going through a series of events that heightens her responses to the world around her. Like the patient she treats, Lim has PTSD, even if tries to deny it.

Maybe episode seven?

But as this PTSD case pushes Lims bubbles to the surface, about to spill over, the rest of Lim finds the Chief beginning to break, either due to stress or emotional labor.
