Her Parents Public Divorce Encouraged Her To Keep Her Dating Life Private

Lily Collins Shares Past Experience with Eating Disorder

Lily has been the subject of many dating rumors, but she refuses to confirm or deny any rumor because she hated the media coverage of her parents divorce. According to Los Angeles Times, she said:

Thats always my natural feeling. My family went through a lot of very public situations and I saw that side of it from a young age. My mum raised me to be normal, and I wanted to grow up and find out who I was and who I wanted to spend time with before anyone else did.

Collins admires how her friends Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence have handled fame. She loves how theyve dealt with the pressure of revealing their private lives. Lily knows that people will talk, and she is content with letting them talk. Her rule is that she will never reveal anything about her private life that she isnt comfortable with. She continued:

I entered this business knowing your private life cant always remain private. I dont feel the need to profess anything publicly or confirm something that in a normal situation you wouldnt have to speak about. If Im out and photographed with someone, then that is what it is. We took that chance and, whatever it is what it is.

Lily Collins pens emotional letter about her estrangement from father Phil Collins

— After years of struggling with an eating disorder, Lily Collins has done something she never thought she’d do.

“I never dreamed Id be posing in a bikini on the cover of Shape. Its a complete 180 for me. Its a magazine about what it means to be healthy,” the 28-year-old actress said in an interview in the July issue of Shape.

Not only does she appear on the cover in a two-piece but she is also shown posing in several different swimsuits for a photo spread in the magazine.

Collins’ swimsuit display comes after more than half a decade of her suffering from an eating disorder that she kept hidden from friends and family.

Now fully recovered, Collins has a new definition of healthy.

“I used to see healthy as this image of what I thought perfect looked like — the perfect muscle definition, etc. But healthy now is how strong I feel,” she said. “Its a beautiful change, because if youre strong and confident, it doesnt matter what muscles are showing. Today I love my shape. My body is the shape it is because it holds my heart.”

Collins is opening up about her battle in a new book, “Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.”

Collins also confronts her past in her new film “To the Bone,” in which she plays a woman sent to rehab for an eating disorder.

Marti Noxon, best known for her role as a writer and co-producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, turns her attention to a disorder closer to home in the new Netflix film To the Bone. This semi-autobiographical work follows 20-year-old Ellen , a young woman wedged between her warring birth mother Judy and her stepmother Susan , with whom she lives while fighting a daily battle against her own body dysmorphia.

Susan is horrified by her anorexic step daughters weight loss and takes her to a clinic where the straight-talking, charismatic Dr William Beckham recommends that she enter a residential programme with other young people with eating disorders. She soon develops a close relationship with one of the residents, Luke , who introduces her to the ways of the programme and the house including the torture chamber, also known as the dining room. To the Bone sheds light on eating disorders through the experience of both Ellen and her fellow housemates without shying away from presenting the reality of recovery. It is at once hopeful and devastating difficult to watch yet essential viewing.

To the Bone is available on Netflix from 14 July.

Lily Collins: Eating Disorder Expert Says She’s Doing Better Than Feared

Lily Collins on the hurt of being too thin for magazines ...

Months before Netflix released the provocative film To The Bone, people were worrying about Lily Collins, the star actress who lost a significant amount of weight to portray a struggling young anorexic. For someone like Collins, a former anorexic herself, losing weight sounds like a recovering alcoholic having a drink: certain relapse and ill health, if not death.

One LA eating disorder therapist who should know isnt all that worried about Collins. Thatd be Carolyn Costin, who has treated the likes of Portia de Rossi, Katharine McPhee, among other eating-disordered actresses.

What this therapist to the stars knows about Collins comes from extensive conversations she had with the actress and director Marti Noxon in preparing for a panel discussion at a special screening of To The Bone. Of course, Costin has also examined the same the world has examined of the 28-year-old actress restoring herself on an Italian beach, looking fabulous like shes restored her weight, too.

I know Costin professionally, so I expected this renowned therapist and founder of a highly-acclaimed treatment program had good reason for suggesting we all stop worrying about Collins weight and well-being. But this enquiring mind needed to know why. Plus, I wanted Costins professional take on the actress, the film and the ongoing hysteria about both.

Long story short, I interviewed Costin via email. What follows is an edited version of that interview. To read the full interview,

Did You Worry About Opening Yourself Back Up To That Mindset By Getting In To Character

It was nerve-wracking, but at the same time I knew I was so far along in my own recovery that my priorities had totally shifted from when I was younger. I was also being held accountable by so many people and I knew that I was supported. I was doing it with a nutritionist and so many people surrounding me that I felt were protecting me in a sense. I was very passionate about telling the story to more people and the anxiety was what drove me every day to continue to fight to tell the story.

Lily Collins’ Message to Fellow Sufferers of Eating Disorders | Lorraine

Marti Noxon wrote the script and directed and its semi-autobiographical for her. She wrote from experience with a lot of heart and a lot of wit and dark humour that I related to so much. I knew from the get-go that if I could relate to it this much on the page, I was definitely going to be able to relate in the moments of filming. I got to insert little bits of myself along the way and Marti was really open to collaboration. I wanted to work with her in order to pay tribute to the character she created and her story, but also my own as well.

Lily Collins Says She Suffered From An Eating Disorder As A Teen

Lily Collins has a very personal connection to her new film “To The Bone” about a young woman battling anorexia.

She too suffered from the eating disorder.

“This movie was really important to me to be a part of because, as a teenager, I suffered from eating disorders,” Collins told Variety.

“It’s important. It’s really important. It’s something that a lot of young women go through and there’s no shame in it, and this movie is about that it’s about embracing your past and about realizing it’s something that doesn’t define who you are, but it’s about your experiences, surrounding yourself with people that support you, and about surviving and getting through it.”

The indie film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by Marti Noxon who co-created “Unreal.” Nixon also suffered from an eating disorder. Keanu Reeves also appears in the film as Collins’ doctor.

The “Mirror Mirror” actress says she felt an immediate kinship with Nixon when they first met.

“Marti was so nurturing right away to reference my experiences, but also in a way, I’m playing Marti’s life, so I just talked to her about all her experiences and we shared a lot,” Collins said. “I talked to the head of the UCLA department for eating disorders and spoke to medical doctors about the facts, and we visited groups of young women and heard about their stories.”

Beauty: Just The Basics

“I’m really quite low-maintenance. I stay hydrated, and I always remove my makeup at the end of the day and slather on sunscreen at the beginning of it. I always carry lip balm. And when I get on a long flight, I take off my makeup and let a hydrating cream sit on my skin through the whole trip. I swear by LancoÌme’s GeÌnefique mask . When you take it off, your complexion is super-radiant. I’m very aware of how important skin care is, but I try not to overdo it.”

Lily Collins reveals former eating disorder while ...

Lily decided to author her book during a rare break in her acting schedule. She addressed her relationship with her dad, her partners, and her struggle with eating disorders. Lily developed her disorder when she turned 16. It was a tough time in her life as she was dealing with her dads divorce from his third wife and the pressure of making it as an actor and model. She told The Sun:

My life fell out of control. I couldnt handle the pain and confusion surrounding my dads divorce, and I was having a hard time balancing being a teenager with pursuing two different grown-up careers both of which Id chosen myself, but which also focused heavily on how I looked.

In pursuit of the perfect body, Lily starved herself, exercised excessively, and developed a dependence on diet pills and laxatives. After a few years, she found a way around her eating disorder, and she committed to helping others with similar eating disorders. She documented her story in her book to show other people that they were not alone in their struggles.

Lilys role as an anorexic woman in To The Bone was personal to her because she related to her characters struggle. She even attended therapy sessions with recovering anorexics to show that she related with them. Lily is happy with how far she has come in terms of recovery, but she admits that she still compares herself with images in magazines. She told :

Lily Collins Admits She Has Dealt With Imposter Syndrome Too

It wasnt until the series Valeria premiered its first season that began to echo this curious pathology. The impostor syndrome, although it manifests itself in different ways, occurs especially when a person is unable to assimilate his successes and achievements, and attributes them to external factors, since there is a problem of self-esteem and confidence.

Something that the actress has to deal with. There have been times of personal success when I thought I didnt deserve my crown. I still have this impostor syndrome that makes me doubt.

Lily Collins Opens Up About Conquering Her Eating Disorder

Lily Collins Talks About “To the Bone” & Dealing With Anorexia

To the Bone

While some actors might balk at the thought of revisiting a traumatic chapter of their lives for a film project, Lily Collins boldly chose do so by making To the Bone, a dark comedy about anorexia that she and writer/director debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this week.

Speaking at Vanity Fairs video suite, Collins told executive West Coast editor Krista Smith why she decided to star in the filmwhich is loosely based on Noxons own experience battling an eating disordereven though it meant that she would have to lose a significant amount of weight for the role.

When I wrote my book last year, I wrote a chapter on eating disorders a week before I got this script, Collins said. It really felt like the the was universe saying, This is either something you need to address yourself, or something you need to bring to new people. Its a conversation that you need to help start among young peoplemales and femalesbecause it is becoming more and more prevalent for both now.

Although she immediately connected with the script, Collins admitted that it did give her some pause.

Additionally, Collins hoped that the film would help audiences who do not often hear about eating disordersespecially from the stick-thin Hollywood community.

Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why Was Criticised For Sending A Dangerous Message To Impressionable Young People What Are Your Thoughts On This

I havent finished it yet, but I really commend Netflix for putting a subject matter out there thats hard to deal with and talk about. With To The Bone its slightly different because they acquired it at Sundance once it had already been made, but I think the fact that they were willing to take a risk in order to put it out there is to be applauded. Teen suicide, bullying and eating disorders are so prevalent today, especially in todays youth with women as well as men, and Netflix reaches so many people. The more something is in the limelight, the more conversations can be had and the more change can occur. I think sometimes controversy causes change and if theyre willing to be the ones who help to distribute that kind of change, thats really quite amazing.
