Reassure Your Child That There Are Always People There To Help
Its important to let your child know that she never has to suffer on her own there will always be someone to help and listen to her. Tell your childs teachers about her panic attacks, and ask them to step in if your child has one at school. Encourage your child to always speak to someone and be with someone if she feels a panic attack looming.
Lastly, it is important to identify and reach out to your childs support system, which would include people who could help her at this time alongside your efforts. This would include a school counsellor, teachers and a psychologist who could see her outside school.

Invite Her To Talk About Feelings
Feelings should be an essential part of your vocabulary as they allow children to learn healthy ways of identifying and coping with everyday situations. Validate their feelings and let them know that whatever theyre experiencing is okay.
Assure your child that the foundations of her community and learning experience will be strong
Even if a beloved staff member or principal is leaving, dont fall into catastrophising with your students or children. Help them see that their experience in school is more than one person, programme or other element.

Helping Kids Through Panic Attacks At School
All kids are going to feel anxious at school sometimes. Students are held to high expectations with tests and classroom behavior, and theres a lot of social pressure. Schools are a huge source of anxiety for most kids but especially for kids with anxiety disorders. The pressure can overwhelm them and can lead to panic attacks.
As the parent of a child with high anxiety, you need to know how to help them when overwhelmed. Panic attacks are sudden periods of paralyzing fear and physical reactions to a perceived threat, even when there is no real threat. Having a panic attack at school can be both terrifying and embarrassing for teens with anxiety disorders.
If your teen has severe anxiety, going to a traditional school can become nearly impossible. Some teens have a better schooling experience when they attend a therapeutic boarding school where the teachers are all trained in helping students with anxiety. There were many times Id walk into a classroom, see a new teacher and quietly say to them, I have panic attacks in class sometimes, so if I have to excuse myself, is that ok? The answer was always, Of course!
Believe it or not, over the years I never had to leave a classroom because of a panic attack. I always came out of it and that was because I didnt feel trapped in the room. I knew that I could leave because I was open with my teachers. So, this tip will help your anxiety in many ways.
Teaching Your Child About Panic Attacks
Help your child understand the facts about panic attacks.
- Fact 1: Panic attacks are the bodys flight-freeze-fight response kicking in. This response prepares our body to defend itself . However, sometimes our body reacts when there is no real danger.
- Fact 2: Panic attacks are harmless, although they can feel very uncomfortable or scary.
- Fact 3: Panic attacks are brief , although they sometimes feel like they go on forever.
- Fact 4: Others cannot tell that you are having a panic attack.
For older children or teens, it can be helpful to discuss anticipatory anxiety, which is the bodys normal response to imagined future threats. Here is one way to explain anticipatory anxiety:
Two hikers are going for a hike in the woods. One hiker runs into the park ranger, who warns her that a bear has been spotted in the woods. The other hiker does not receive this warning and continues on his way enjoying an afternoon hike. The hiker who was alerted to the bear is very cautious and constantly on the lookout for the bear. She becomes sensitive to anything that suggests the bear is near and may decide to avoid the woods altogether and not return to the park. This is what happens when you have a panic attack. Because you have been alerted to it, you may find yourself always on the lookout for another panic attack. This can make you feel nervous, which may lead to another panic attack. You may even start to avoid things that remind you of the attack.

How To Cope With Panic Attacks
When you have had a panic attack, you might worry about if – or when – you are next going to have one. This can make everyday tasks like going to school, leaving the house or meeting up with friends much more difficult. But remember, you are not alone and there is support available to help you get through this. If you are worried about when you are next going to have a panic attack, here are some things that can help you cope.
Speak to someone you trust. If you are feeling anxious or worried that you might have a panic attack, talk to friends or family. They can help you take your mind off what is making you feel panicked and support you to find the help you need. If you are struggling to say how you are feeling, you can always write your thoughts down or put them in notes on your phone if you are planning to speak to a teacher or your GP.
If you are worried about having a panic attack at school, college, or university, speak to a teacher or a member of staff. They can work with you to help you with things like finding a safe space to take some time out if you are feeling anxious or panicked.
If you feel like youre struggling to cope with everyday tasks, speak to your GP. They can listen to how you are feeling and suggest different types of treatments like therapy or counselling or medication for anxiety to help you tackle your panic attacks.
When Anxiety Hits At School
As the number of teens who suffer from anxiety disorders continues to grow, mental-health care is increasingly part of school nurses’ job descriptions.
Salli-Ann Holloway could not breathe. Sitting in her Advanced Placement English class, she could not stop shaking. Her neck twitched relentlessly. She gasped for air. Her body went numb.
Holloway, 17, rushed to the school nurses office as she had many times before. Panic attacks had become commonplace for her as the stress of junior year took hold. The nurse soothed her as they waited for her mother to arrive. This would not be the last time Holloways illness interrupted her life.
Holloway is not alone. About 8 percent of todays U.S. teens suffer from some type of diagnosed anxiety disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. And anxiety has been on the rise among children and young adults since at least the 1950s. School counselors and nurses alike have cited increased amounts of stress, pressure, social media, and divorce as causes for this surge in anxiety that has not only affected the teens who suffer but school administrators trying to help their students.
Things have changed dramatically with my students over the past couple of decades, said Dr. Sharon Sevier, chair of the board of The American School Counselor Association and counselor at Lafayette High School in St. Louis. Early in my career, I saw very few mental-health issues, and the home and family issues were more rare.

Helping Someone Whos Having A Panic Attack
It can be scary when someone you know is having a panic attack. But there are some simple things you can do to help them:
- Stay calm Keep your voice calm and dont talk about or focus on whats happening to them during the panic attack. Remind the person that theyre safe and that itll be over soon.
- Ask if they need anything Someone having a panic attack might not always be able to tell you what they need, but asking can help remind them theyre not alone.
- Help them to breathe Try counting out loud as you breathe in for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds.
- Support them afterwards Take them somewhere quiet to calm down and get them some water if they need it. Try to stay with them for a few minutes afterwards or for as long as they need to feel better.

Breathing Exercise For Panic Attacks
If youre breathing quickly during a panic attack, doing a breathing exercise can ease your other symptoms. Try this:
- breathe in as slowly, deeply and gently as you can, through your nose
- breathe out slowly, deeply and gently through your mouth
- some people find it helpful to count steadily from one to five on each in-breath and each out-breath
- close your eyes and focus on your breathing
You should start to feel better in a few minutes. You may feel tired afterwards.

Sit Close To The Door
At times when I was experiencing high anxiety in class, I always sat close to the door. This gave me the confidence knowing that if I had to leave due to a panic attack in class, I could.
However, not all teachers allowed you to pick your own seats. Even if they do, you wont always get the seat you want. Plus, if youre chatty like I am, the seat you choose is likely to change as youll get moved away from your friends. The key? Stop talking in class and you can sit in the spot you chose.
Although, thats often easier said than done.
If you find yourself getting stuck in the back corner furthest away from the door, resort back to step three. Speak with your teacher. Let them know that you feel most comfortable closest to the door in case you have a panic attack in class. Chances are, theyll let you sit there. At times, teachers even let me set in the hallway to do my work more like I was forced to sit out there because I wouldnt stop talking, but you get what I mean.
Teachers provide solutions. Thats what they do. So, reach out to them.
The worst thing you can do when having a panic attack in class or in school is bottle it up. Speaking with a teacher or guidance counselor will instantly decrease your anxiety. When a teacher doesnt know whats going on, they cant help you. So, dont be ashamed of your mental illness. Reaching out to a teacher will help them help you overcome this terrible struggle in and outside of the classroom.

Most colleges and universities offer on-campus counseling services. Such help may be provided through certain higher education programs. For instance, the doctoral programs in clinical psychology and counseling often have supervised trainees who provide free or low-cost services. Additionally, many colleges and universities have health centers that may provide psychological services.
Most colleges and universities provide a range of mental health services that are available to students and are both high quality and budget-friendly.
Even if counseling services are not available on campus, the university health center should be able to provide you with information on nearby clinics and therapists.
Local mental health professionals can also be found by searching online or in a phonebook. It may take some time to get an appointment, so try to contact one as soon as symptoms occur. The sooner you get help, the quicker you can expect to start coping with your panic attacks.
Focus On Action Over Words
A soothing, familiar voice helps some people, but try to avoid repeatedly saying things like dont worry or asking them if theyre alright over and over.
Of course you mean well, but your words may not have much benefit in the moment. They can also make the situation more stressful, since your loved one may believe theyre doing something wrong by not being alright.

Try Muscle Relaxation Techniques
Another symptom of panic attacks is muscle tension. Practicing muscle relaxation techniques may help limit an attack. This is because if the mind senses that the body is relaxing, other symptoms such as rapid breathing may also diminish.
A technique called progressive muscle relaxation is a popular method for coping with anxiety and panic attacks.
