Invite A Friend On A Walk

How to stop feeling lonely and depressed | Path2inspiration Clips

There are few things like walking and talking.

Consider inviting a friend or neighbor to walk with you every few days.

Exercising will increase your endorphins and make you feel better. And doing it in good company can help you foster a sense of well-being that could help you overcome feeling lonely.

You can also make the walk extra special by following some of these ideas:

  • Switch routes and scenery every day you go out to walk.
  • Pick different times of the day so you can enjoy sunrises, sunsets, and mid-afternoons, if possible.
  • Consider a drive to a park, forest preserve, or mall to walk in a new environment.
  • Be mindful of whats going on around you, focusing on things like the sky, people, sounds, and physical sensations.
  • Consider setting a different goal for each day. These can include the duration of the walk, pace and rhythm, and conversation topics. For example, you could have a day where you only exchange jokes, and another walk could be a vent day.

A New Study Suggests Five Ways To Keep Loneliness In Check

Are there times that you feel you dont deserve it when good things happen to you? Do you look at yourself in the mirror and feel not just disappointed, but actually overwhelmed with self-disgust? Do you look at your clothes and hair and feel convinced that you look horrible, and that everyone else thinks so too? Do you wish you had more people to hang out with, but are afraid that they, too, find you disgusting? These are feelings that everyone has from time to time, but when they become a constant feature of ones inner life, they can turn out to have severe consequences for your mental health.

Theres another element at work as well, Ypsilanti and her coauthors suggest. Its one thing to have feelings of self-disgust and quite another to be unable to make those feelings go away. Rumination is known to be a factor in depression, and when you constantly think about how disgusting you are, its likely that youll become even more depressed. Therefore, the British researchers added emotion regulation to their theoretical model. The two forms of emotion regulation they investigated included suppression and reappraisal. If, instead of thinking about how flawed you are, you either push those thoughts aside or reframe them positively , then youll be less vulnerable to experiencing the depression that goes along with feelings of self-disgust.

Things To Do When Youre Feeling Lonely

1 Write out your feelings

Just like Im doing right now. Im writing through it and sharing my loneliness with you. You can write whatever you want really but I would suggest one of two things:

  • write about why your sad, or
  • write about the things you are grateful for

It doesnt have to be Hemingway stuff. Just anything really. When we write from our heart and soul and pour it all out, its no longer bottled up inside of us. Its good to get it out.

2 Cry it out

Yup. Put on your favourite heartbreaking music and have a good sob fest. This is soooo therapeutic for me. It makes me feel like Im detoxifying my soul. Nuttin wrong with that. Even our soul needs a good cleanse!

Crying doesnt make you weak or a wimp. It shows you have a heart and feelings. It shows you are a perfectly imperfect human being. Cry your little heart out and I promise you will feel so much better.

3 Call a friend

Now, this may sound like a no brainer but I know personally, sometimes I need people to tell me to do this. Ill tell someone I was said on a certain night and theyll say, why didnt you call me?. Our friends really dont want us feeling lonely.

It makes them sad to know that we were sad and depressed and didnt reach out to them.

Besides, you never know how the conversation will end up and it may have the two of you laughing your heads off by the time its done!

Seek Out Professional Help

If you feel youve done several things to stop feeling lonely, but you still do, it might be a good idea to seek additional support.

Magavi says that some signs its time to talk with someone else include:

  • bouts of tearfulness
  • episodes of irritability that interfere with work or family
  • undereating or overeating in response to loneliness
  • staying in bed all day, excessive sleepiness, or chronic fatigue
  • loss of interest and motivation to take care of yourself, such as avoiding brushing your teeth and showering

Loneliness can transform into demoralization and depression, she said. Individuals with significant mood and anxiety concerns and feelings of loneliness, which affect their functionality, should consider scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist or therapist.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help identify your anxiety pattern and reframe your thinking so you can engage in coping behaviors.

In some cases, medications are warranted to treat mood and anxiety concerns, Magavi said.

This is not always the case, though. Sometimes, just having someone to talk with without apprehension might help you feel better. You can set your own goals for therapy, and it can only be about talking.

Easy Things To Do When Youre Feeling Lonely

Whether you’re feeling down about the number of comments on your latest Instagram post, or just have that sense that no one else really gets you, you’ve experienced it. Feeling lonely is, perhaps ironically, universal.

But, what is loneliness, exactly? Simply put, “it’s the discrepancy between what you have and what you want from your relationships,” says Stephanie Cacioppo, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago, who specializes in the study of loneliness and social cognition.

Its not necessarily about being physically surrounded by peoplebecause you might feel especially lonely in a crowdbut about your mentality. When you feel lonely, its usually because you arent quite satisfied with what you have, whether its in that moment or throughout your life, Cacioppo explains. And until you’re able to pinpoint and then address what you’re dissatisfied with, you’ll feel isolated, left out, and in need of companionship.

The upside: Feeling lonely isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Cacioppo notes. It’s a reminder that something’s off about your social environment and that you need to prioritize your happiness.

Easier said than done, right? Thought you might say that. But here are 17 things you can actually do to feel a little less lonely, a little more confident, and way more connected.
