How Ssris Affect The Brain

Sertraline is far from the only SSRI on the market. Other brand names for different drugs in the SSRI category include Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Lexapro.

Mental health disorders like depression and OCD are neurological illnesses, meaning that they cause our brains to dysfunction. One of the ways that these disorders change our brains is through changing the patterns of release and reuptake of certain neurotransmitters.

One neurotransmitter, serotonin, sends messages between neurons in regions of the brain that are responsible for mood. SSRIs limit the reabsorption of serotonin into the neurons, which then increases the overall levels of serotonin in the brain. When there is enough serotonin available in the brain, it starts working properly again in other words, the symptoms of the mental illness get better.

Sertraline For Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Are antidepressants safe for individuals who have bipolar ...

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, is diagnosed when people with female reproductive organs experience symptoms of depression only at certain times in their menstrual cycle. Symptoms of this PMDD are very similar to major depressive disorder, so it makes sense that sertraline would be effective for this condition.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by pathologic variations in mood, with periods of mania, hypomania, psychosis, and depression. The two most common types, bipolar I and bipolar II, differ in the presentation of mood variations. The course of bipolar II is less well studied and less understood than bipolar I disorder. Patients with bipolar I disorder have episodes of full mania alternating with episodes of major depression,1,2 whereas patients with bipolar II disorder pre-sent with one or more episodes of major depression with at least one hypomanic episode.1 Bipolar II can also manifest itself as a mixed state, which is the presence of both depressive and mood elevated symptoms simultaneously.3 Patients with bipolar II disorder display fewer manic symptoms than those with bipolar I disorder; both conditions may have an equivalent impact on quality of life and may also be associated with increased suicide risk.3 Patients may also present with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, which consists of at least four discrete episodes of mania or depression in a single year, demarcated by clear periods of remission or by switches to episodes of opposite polarity.4;

What Should I Know About Storage And Disposal Of This Medication

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture .

It is important to keep all medication out of sight and reach of children as many containers are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location â one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach.

Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them. However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community. See the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medicines website for more information if you do not have access to a take-back program.

Important Cautions About Zoloft Medication

Do antidepressants increase risk of mania and bipolar disorder in people with depression?

There are several important things to note if you will be using Zoloft. These include:

  • You should not take Zoloft if you’re taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor , and there should be a two-week break between stopping or starting Zoloft and starting or stopping a MAOI. Serious, even fatal, complications can occur when these types of drugs are combined.
  • The manufacturer advises that you should not drink alcohol while taking Zoloft.
  • Do not discontinue Zoloft without talking to your doctor. You should also not stop taking Zoloft all at once to avoid SSRI discontinuation syndrome.
  • Practice caution if you are using any other medications which may increase your levels of serotonin. There are several medications, both mental health medications and non-mental health related drugs, such as some pain medications, which can add together to increase levels. The resultant serotonin syndrome, which can be medically serious, is often avoided by making sure your doctor is aware of all medications you are taking.
  • It could take up to eight weeks before your medicine has its full effect.
  • Be aware that any antidepressant has the possibility of triggering hypomania or mania.

Which Bipolar Medicine Is Best

Doctors use many types of drugs to treat bipolar disorder. Some fight the extreme highs of mania and others treat the lows of depression. You might take one drug at a time or a few at the same time.

The best bipolar medicine is the one that works best for you. Work with your doctor to decide on the medication plan that helps you the most.

You may keep taking these medications for years or decades, even if itâs been a long time since your last manic or depressive episode. This is called maintenance therapy and helps prevent recurrence of symptoms.

Finding The Right Bipolar Disorder Medication

Bipolar disorder (depression & mania) – causes, symptoms, treatment & pathology

It can take a while to find the right bipolar medication and dose. Everyone responds to medication differently, so you may have to try several bipolar disorder drugs before you find the one that works for you. Be patient, but dont settle for a bipolar medication that makes you feel lousy, either.

Once youve discovered the right bipolar disorder drug or drug cocktail, it may still take time to determine the optimal dose. In the case of mood stabilizing medications such as lithium, the difference between a beneficial dose and a toxic one is small. Frequent office visits to re-evaluate your medication needs and careful monitoring of symptoms and side effects will help you stay safe.

When starting a new medication, educate yourself about how to take it safely. Questions to ask your doctor about any new prescription include:

  • When and how should I take this medication?
  • Are there any foods or other substances I will need to avoid?
  • How will this drug interact with my other prescriptions?
  • How long will I have to take this medication?
  • Will withdrawing from the drug be difficult if I decide to stop?
  • Will my symptoms return when I stop taking the medication?
  • How often should you talk with your doctor?

During an acute manic or depressive episode, youll likely need to talk with your doctor at least once a week to monitor your symptoms, medications, and any side effects youre experiencing. This will become less often as you start to recover. Once youre feeling better, youll likely still need to review things with your doctor every few months. However, its important to see your doctor right away if you experience any of the following:

    • Suicidal or violent feelings.
