Cut up credit cards, or place them in a plastic container filled with water in your freezerso you’ll have to wait at least a few hours for the ice to melt to access them . Limit access to your bank account give your debit card and checks to a trusted family member, asking them to hold both for you and grant access when you are mentally well. And set ground rules for how you can access your funds and when. Tell the individual they shouldn’t just arbitrarily give you your money or cards when you ask. Instead, tell them your intentions for accessing your finances, and discuss the clear, established spending plan you set up back at Step 3.
Is all of this easy? No. Despite these tips and tricks, I’ve still struggledand I’ve still slipped up. There are still times when I make financial mistakes because of my bipolar disorder, albeit on a smaller scale than before. But I’ve definitely become more conscious of my behaviors I’ve become more transparent, with myself and my network of loved ones, doctors, caregives, and friends. And when I am well, I work hard to rectify any errs in judgement. I work to correct my mistakes, and to take two steps forward towards a healthier financial future for me and my family. Study Finds Link Between Bipolar Disorder And Compulsive Spending
A new study led by the Academy of Research & Improvement at Solent NHS Trust has shown a link between people with Bipolar Disorder and compulsive spending.
The study highlighted that compulsive spending may be increased by psychological factors such as low self-esteem and the need to achieve, which are common traits for people with bipolar disorder. It built upon two previous studies on the same topic.
Compulsive spending is defined as a need or obsession with shopping and spending money, resulting in the constant need to shop and often results in the purchase of unnecessary or even unwanted items.
The research was led by Clinical Psychologist Dr Thomas Richardson and co-authored by Chris Fitch from the Personal Finance Research Centre at the University of Bristol. It found that compulsive spending increased over time more for those with lower self-esteem or less mindful about their spending with some participants reporting their spending running on automatic.
Compulsive spending also increased for those with stronger thoughts about achievement, which are often higher in people with bipolar disorder.
Forty participants were given two sets of questionnaires across a four-month period and were asked questions around their spending behaviours and current financial situation. They were also asked about their mental health and psychological factors such as how mindful they were.

I did once I realized that learning how to get free music and then burning my own CD’s for the car would not be worth it – so I just bought the CD’s which were not terribly expensive. – most clothes fit, and the rest would be returned promptly. The clothes also sort of play well together, although I was not purposefully buying them thinking of combining them. But the result is pretty nice – versatile. few pairs of shoes fit, but I will return the rest. One pair of Birkenstocks bought on sale at Zappo’s seems to fit well, so I am excited – it is really hard for me to buy shoes since my feet are big.So far not manic. And, I am cautious with receipts/tags.But it feels good.So I wonder why.Is it because I take care of the basics ?

How Do I Get Help If I Think I Have Bipolar Disorder
The usual first step to getting help is to speak to your GP.
It can help to keep a record of your moods. This can help you and your GP to understand your mood swings. Bipolar UK have a mood diary and a mood scale on their website. You can find their details in the Useful contacts section at the bottom of this page.
Your GP cant diagnose bipolar disorder. Only a psychiatrist can make a formal diagnosis. Your GP may arrange an appointment with a psychiatrist if you have:

They might refer you to a psychiatrist at your local NHS community mental health team .
Your GP should make an urgent referral to the CMHT if they think that you might have mania or severe depression. Or there is a chance that you are a danger to yourself or someone else.
Your GP should refer you to your local NHS early intervention team if you have an episode of psychosis and its your first one.
Bipolar disorder can be difficult to diagnose because it affects everyone differently. Also, the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be experienced by people who have other mental illness diagnoses. It can take a long time to get a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

A prepaid debit card allows you to load a specific amount of money onto a card and use it to pay for items.
With a prepaid debit card, I’d only be able to spend up to the amount I put on the card before my transaction is denied. I want to set this up before I have the chance to make impulse purchases and use it as my card for emergency spending. I’ll probably lean toward setting a spending limit on my debit card, but this is another good option I’ll consider if the time comes.
