For the first part of her career, Valori Treloar, MD, worked with patients like a typical skin doctor. But over time, she grew tired of the few options that she could use on hard-to-treat cases, as well as the serious side effects that some could cause.
So the Massachusetts doctor became a certified nutrition specialist and now promotes diet fixes to her patients along with medicine.
Several studies from 40 years ago âprovedâ that diet doesnât cause acne, Treloar says, and this thinking became a widely held belief in medicine. âAll through medical school and through my dermatology training, I was taught, âDonât worry about what your patient eats, itâs not relevant to their acne,ââ Treloar tells WebMD.
But in recent years, some research has supported new thinking.
A good way to improve the health of your skin is to eat in a manner that keeps your blood sugar steady, she tells WebMD. Some foods make your blood sugar quickly soar. This triggers your body to make a burst of the hormone insulin to help your cells absorb the sugar.
If throughout the day youâre âeating a cookie, youâre eating a granola bar, and youâre drinking a sweetened beverage, youâre pushing your blood sugar up high and fast, and youâre going to have more insulin circulating in your bloodstream,â says Treloar, who co-authored The Clear Skin Diet.
Foods That Cause Acne Breakouts Alcohol

Volunteers who were semi-starved and lost more than 25% of their body weight became obsessed with food and eating. Several of the men became collectors of cookbooks and recipes, a behavior that has been noted in people with anorexia as well.

If you suspect that youre breaking out because of dairy, you may want to try an elimination diet. By cutting dairy out of your diet completely and watching how your skin reacts, you can get a pretty clear indication of how dairy is affecting your skin.

Soy oftentimes becomes a staple when people switch to a plant-based diet, which can be a real disaster for acne-prone skin. Worse yet, soy is in tons of Vegan products, including tofu, meatless burgers or meat alternatives, protein powder, and plant-based milk.

A very recent paper published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology put women with PCOS on two dietary regimens. The hormonal profile of PCOS is quite similar to that of female adult acne, so its a good proxy group to use . Heres the macronutrient composition for the two diet groups.

Prevalence Of Pcos And Eating Disorders
PCOS is believed to affect up to 20% of reproductive-aged women. While research on eating disorders among those with PCOS is scant, the prevalence of eating disorders appears to be higher than among the general population.
One study of individuals with PCOS reported a high prevalence of overall eating disorders versus the prevalence among those without PCOS .
In another study, the prevalence of disordered eating in people with PCOS was over four times the rate of disordered eating behaviors among individuals without PCOS. People with PCOS exhibited significantly higher rates of shape and weight concerns.

Cow’s Milk May Lead To Acne Breakouts
While cow’s milk is a low-glycemic beverage, some studies suggest that drinking this type of milk may be linked to an increase in acne breakouts. In these studies, all types of cow’s milk have been linked to acne. Heres what the researchers discovered.

In one study, women who drank 2 or more glasses of skim milk per day were 44% more likely to have acne than the other women in this study.
USA: 47,355 adult women were asked to recall what they ate during their high school years. Only cow’s milk was found to be linked to acne. Women who drank 2 or more glasses of skim milk a day were 44% more likely to have acne than others.5
USA: 6,094 girls, aged 9 to 15 years old, completed 2 lengthy questionnaires about their diet. The girls who drank the most cow’s milk were more likely to have acne.6
USA: 4,273 boys, aged 9 to 15 years old, completed 2 lengthy questionnaires about their diet. The boys who drank skim milk were more likely to have acne.7
Italy: 205 patients, aged 10 to 24 years old, who were seeing a dermatologist for moderate to severe acne, and 358 patients in the same age range who were seeing a dermatologist for another skin condition were asked what they ate. The patients with acne drank significantly more cow’s milk than the patients who did not have acne. There were no other differences in diet between the 2 groups of patients.8
B Common Pitfalls And Side
Refeeding syndrome refers to the potentially lethal complication of refeeding severely malnourished patients, when the shift from a catabolic to anabolic state leads to insulin being released in response to carbohydrate intake. Electrolyte abnormalities can ensue, particularly in the first week after starting nutritional supplementation. Those at highest risk are those with severe malnutrition, BMI < 12 kg/m2, history of rapid weight loss, binging, vomiting, laxative abuse, or concurrent comorbidities.
Peripheral edema and fluid retention may develop with abrupt cessation of diuretics or laxatives, when chronic dehydration induces elevated aldosterone levels and salt and water retention. With weight loss, the heart muscle atrophies along with total muscle mass. When fluid overload occurs with refeeding, patients are at risk for heart failure. This, along with bradycardia and prolonged QT interval, make the heart more susceptible to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death from hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia.
Rare complications from repetitive vomiting include esophageal tears or rupture.
Prolonged QT has been reported in patients with anorexia nervosa, and thus medications with this side effect should be avoided especially given their risk of cardiovascular compromise .

These manifestations include xerosis, lanugo-like body hair, telogen effluvium, carotenoderma, acne, hyperpigmentation, seborrheic dermatitis, acrocyanosis, perniosis, petechiae, livedo reticularis, interdigital intertrigo, paronychia, generalized pruritus, acquired striae distensae, slower wound healing, prurigo pigmentosa, edema, linear erythema craquele, acral coldness, pellagra, scurvy, and acrodermatitis enteropathica.
Even though skin signs of eating disorders improve with weight gain, the dermatologist will be asked to treat the dermatological conditions mentioned above.
Xerosis improves with moisturizing ointments and humidification of the environment.
Cheilitis, angular stomatitis, and nail fragility appear to respond to topical tocopherol .
Russells sign may decrease in size following applications of ointments that contain urea. Regular dental treatment is required to avoid tooth loss.
Can Bulimia Cause Acne
The effects of bulimia include hormonal imbalances, and when your hormones go off-kilter you can experience acne and skin problems. Also, if you used your cell phone a lot you may have developed acne where your phone and hand rub against your skin . The phone isnt causing your acneits more likely the oils and dirt on your hand and on your phone are causing the acne. The same is true for bulimia and acne. Rather than the underlying addiction behaviors of bulimia causing your acne, instead its more often because of hygiene and improper skin care related to purging rather than a direct relationship between bulimia and acne.

Can Eating Disorders Be Cured
The answer is yes the EDs can be cured, but intensive treatment in a specialised centre is generally needed. It is important to know that recovery is rarely rapid, and in the majority of cases it could take several years. Early diagnosis and early intervention are key factors, and are associated with a better prognosis.

Long term studies show that between 50% and 85% of those with Anorexia Nervosa fully recover. The prognosis is better in cases of Anorexia Nervosa that start in adolescence rather than in adulthood. In a significant percentage of cases, the symptoms can change over time. According to one study, almost half of those with Anorexia Nervosa could end up developing bulimia symptoms. An individual may recover from one ED and later relapse into a different disorder.
Bulimia Nervosa. The mortality risk is not as elevated as in Anorexia Nervosa, but the percentage of patients that die due to suicide is higher. Long term studies show that 75% fully recover.

Unlike with girls, who often become alarmingly skinny and visibly unhealthy, eating disorders in boys are harder to recognize because often nothing looks wrong on the outside. Eating disorders in boys are also easier to hide under the guise of what is considered acceptable, even laudable, male behavior.
Exercising, even excessively, is socially valued in men, says Dr. Bunnell, who adds that overeating is also more socially condoned in men than in women. A group of 17-year-old boys eating multiple Big Macs, for example, might be considered amusing or even cool, he says. In fact, these behaviors may be masking an eating disorder, but we dont notice the psychological suffering piece.
