Does Blair Have An Eating Disorder

Don't Miss

French Delicacies Are Her Weakness

Blair’s Eating Disorder 3X18

Due to her love for all things fancy and European, its no wonder that Blair has an expensive taste for food as well. Back home, her favorite restaurant is The Gramercy Tavern, a fancy New American style restaurant located in Manhattan. In Paris, La Rotisserie de Beaujolais is her favorite restaurant, which serves traditional French cuisine.

We see her consume tons of French-style pastries during the show as well, which further proves her love for European style food. Blairs favorite Thanksgiving treat has also been revealed as oyster stuffing.

She Has Deep Mental Health Issues

Its no secret that Blair is a troubled person. The show explores her damaged psyche little by little, revealing bits and pieces of her past that turned her into a very callous person. She has a hard time trusting people and forming truly meaningful bonds. Most of the time, she hides her own genuine, emotional side.

As a result, Blair is diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and she treats this with medication. In the past, shes also suffered from bulimia, which has left its own scars on her for life.

Where Does Blair Waldorf Live

Shes An Overachiever In Disguise

Blair is often portrayed as an intense character who comes across ruthless and cruel. Shes very vindictive and will go to any lengths needed to get what she wants. This is shown in how she treats her minions in the first few seasons as mere accessories and pawns.

However, rather than being your typical mean girl, Blair is actually just incredibly ambitious, with a penchant for always overachieving. Since she wants to be perfect so deeply, she tends to go for solutions that get her results fast and efficiently, even if they end up hurting those around her.

My Thoughts On Blairs Bulimia In The Show

Blair Waldorf Must Pie

Like most people, I was a little disheartened at first bc after mentioning it in season 1, it was hardly ever brought up…or at least for a while. As someone who struggles with bulimia myself, I was hoping to see this side of her depicted better

Then it becomes transparent that they were angling this from a perspective where Blair is further along in her recovery. When Blair binges and purges after learning that Eleanor disinvited Harold, it becomes a bit more obvious that this was no longer a regular behavior of hers compared to what it used to be. She tells Serena I didnt mean for it to happen and informs her that she will call her doctor first thing after thanksgiving. In a flashback scene from the previous Thanksgiving, they show Eleanor and Harold discussing the doctors who have been treating her ED which indicated shes been in recovery for at least a year at that point.

When Serena was hospitalized , Blair encouraged her to seek treatment at the Ofstroff Center and disclosed that when she first started treatment for her condition she was reluctant to go but grateful for how much it helped her and highlights how necessary it was. Then when she attends events with Louis and Beatrice and everyone suspects she is relapsing, she tells Dan Im not bulimic, Im pregnant. Prior to that, Dorota states that she digests everything now and that her bulimia was part of her past

Thats just my two cents

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

Previously referred to as Selective Eating Disorder, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder refers to intense selectivity of the food you eat. Like anorexia, people suffering from ARFID create dangerous limitations and restrictions for their diets. These restrictions can lead to unhealthy levels of weight loss.

However, unlike anorexia and many other eating disorders, ARFID doesnt involve stress about body image or weight. Individuals with ARFID instead avoid food due to a distaste of certain smells, textures, tastes, or other properties. ARFID is far more severe than general picky eating. Individuals with ARFID can experience unhealthy weight loss, nutrient deficiencies, and other dangerous side effects. Treatment For Blairs Eating Disorder: Bulimia Nervosa

After examining Blair Waldorfs eating disorder, it would be better, to begin with, Behavioral therapy sessions. Blair was not taught how to manage her emotions and deal with whatever problems occurred in her life. So therapy could help her be more sure of herself and her emotions, it will also help her how to deal with body image issues and perhaps also get her into an exercise program, to maintain her physical health so that she feels more in shape and healthy. her mother and her friends could keep a tab on her eating habits but understanding her illness completely will help her know that there are other methods of dealing with problems in life.

Also, making Blair take a low dosage of antidepressants or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and checking her progress minutely while she is on her medication can also contribute quite much to the treatment. And what is more important in the case of Blair, is communication between her mother and herself. They both need to come to a common ground and need to discuss her illness in a healthier manner. These treatments can help Blair win over this disorder and she would eventually learn how to discuss her feelings and problems and not binge and purge as a coping mechanism.

    Blair Waldorfs Bulimic Thanksgiving

In arguably one of the most classic Thanksgiving episodes of the five to choose from in the Gossip Girl oeuvre, it is the first seasons inaugural Turkey Day episodeBlair Waldorf Must Pie!that reels us in with regard to the significance of the holiday in the hyper-caricaturized world of these privileged Upper East Siders. After all, no one loves ignoring the complicated history of Thanksgiving more than white people of means. Its also a day when Gossip Girl, as she puts it, trades her laptop for stovetop . For Blair Waldorf , the stovetop holds no appeal, if only because it means shell have to vomit up whatevers on it later.

With the majority of her high-running emotions tied to scarfing and barfing, Thanksgiving is a major trigger. Not only because its a naturally neurotic time as one is forced to spend quality family time, but because Blair can now only associate the holiday with her father, who has since left her mother, Eleanor , for another man named Romain. Structured as a flashback episode interwoven with the present, we look back at Blairs final Turkey Day spent in a non-broken home in 2006 . It is her mothers underhanded shunning of her father the following year that leads Blair back down the path of her eating disorder, which she had previously managed to curb .

How Popular Media Romanticizes And Stigmatizes Eating Disorders

    Culture Stuff Writer: Prashamsa Rayamajhi

Content warning: this article discusses eating disorders in detail.

My first time seeing an eating disorder portrayed in mainstream media was when I watched Gossip Girl. I was a freshman in high school watching a show about a group of rich white teenagers, supposedly my age, teeming with privilege and extravagance that I would never have. It was the perfect show for me to escape my somewhat depressing lifewhy concern myself with my real problems and issues when I could consume myself with these fictional characters trivial issues? But that changed when, halfway through the first season, Blair Waldorf went on a binge episode, and subsequently purged everything shed eaten. I vividly remember how angry I felt watching Blair make herself throw up on screen. As someone who was suffering with anorexia nervosa at the time, my anger only compounded when the episode ended with Blair agreeing that her problem had returned, and that she would call her doctor up again to fix everything. Her problembulimiaonly ever appeared in one other episode throughout the entire show.

    What Is Spasmodic Dysphonia Exactly

    blair bulimia moments

Spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder that affects the voice muscles in a persons larynx , according to the National Institutes of Health . When you speak, air from your lungs is pushed between your vocal cords with enough pressure to make them vibrateand the resulting sound is your voice. But when someone has spasmodic dysphonia, the muscles inside the vocal cords have spasms, which interfere with the ability of the vocal cords to vibrate and produce their voice.

People with spasmodic dysphonia can have voice breaks, a tight and strained-sounding voice, and may have occasional breaks in their voice that happen every few sentences, the NIH says. But, if the disorder is more severe, a person may have spasms with every other word that make it hard for other people to understand them.

Symptoms can be mild and only happen here and there, but can progress and become worse with time.

In general, dysphonia is not one of the classic presentations we talk about in MS, says Amit Sachdev, MD, associate medical director for the department of neurology and ophthalmology at Michigan State University. That doesnt mean its not related to the diseaseits just more rare, he explains. In my experience, it would be well within the range of things MS could cause, but would be a less common feature of the disease, he says.

Eating Disorders Are The New Trend

Back when I was in high school, I was obsessed with a show called Gossip Girl. I remember being captivated by the glitz and glamour of beautiful people and their fictional lives in the upper east side of Manhattan, New York. As for me, my favorite character on the show was Blair Waldorf. Although she may seem like the stereotypical teen fiction character, her story was one that really provoked my attention. She was the popular girl in high school who possessed all the qualities that befit her accomplished title of Queen Bee. On the surface, she was beautiful, thin, wealthy, sophisticated, fashionableshe was pretty much perfect. And being the gullible teen with low self-esteem in high school, I strived to emulate something along those lines.

    Gossip Girl

My bulimia lasted for almost two years and I never fully recovered until late freshman year of college. Through my experience with an eating disorder, I began to ruminate about television shows that didnt directly glamorize such things as eating disorders, but the way the portrayed these characters and the environment they inhabit made it seem more okay than it actually was. It gave the impression that it was alright to have bulimia because despite the struggle and its crippling effects, youd still remain beautiful and thin.
