  • They Miss Perceiving The World As They Did Prior To The Disorder

Depression and mania can cause ones perception of the world to change dramatically. This can be both exhausting and frustrating. When the medications start to balance out and things begin to stabilize, the individual may again see things through a more normal lens. This can be a great feeling, but it can also be frightening because its unclear if this will last.

You Dont Worry How He Feelsyou Just Know

Similar to what I said in my article about how to know if a guy likes you, when a guy loves you, you just know. Its obvious to you and to everyone around you. Youll have a feeling of peace and calm and just knowing.

When someone truly loves you, his behavior and way of being with you wont arouse feelings of insecurity/fear/anxiety/worry in you .

Check in with yourself and see where its coming from. Usually, when we feel uneasy, like the rug is going to be pulled out from under us, its because the relationship isnt standing on a stable ground because the guy isnt sure of how he feels. When someone loves you, he shows it and you just know it, even before he says it.

I hope after reading this article youre totally clear on the signs a man is in love with you. But before you go, I need to tell you that theres a crucial period in your relationship that will determine if you and he end up together, or if the relationship falls apart. At some point, he will start to back off. He may lose interest, he may pull away, he may suddenly need space. Do you know how to handle it when he does this? If not, be sure to read this: If Hes Pulling Away, Do This…

    Bipolar Mania Vs True Love

Slowing down is good advice for anyone caught up in the intense emotions of new love, says David Goldenberg, MD, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College.

During that early phase, he explains, its common to shy away from the uncomfortable parts of getting to know another person. The impulsivity associated with bipolar can make it even more likely youll steamroll ahead.

On behalf of the sexuality committee, Goldenberg and Haase prepared a working paper titled In the Mood for Love. In it, they describe the emotional state of limerenceearly stages of romantic love characterized by blissful euphoria and intense longing for another personand compare it to the egocentricity, grandiosity, and elation of mania.

The paper goes on to identify some of the key differences between true love and hypomanic exuberance, including a seasonal pattern of love affairs, reckless lack of judgment, and over-the-top impulsive actions. For people with bipolar, lovesick can be more than a metaphor.

There is a very strong similarity between that swept away experience of being in love and that of mania, agrees Joseph F. Goldberg, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. However, an individuals orientation is very different in the two states.

He also assesses changes in mood, energy, sleep, cognition, and judgment for indicators of a manic episode.

In Irving Berlins catchy Broadway tune Youre Just in Love, a puzzled young man wonders why he cant sleep or eat, yet feels like hes walking on air. Its OK, hes told:

You dont need analyzing, It is not so surprising Youre not sick, youre just in love.

When you have bipolar disorder, though, the question becomes more complicated. Is it love when youre swept by euphoria, erotic stirrings, a special feeling of connection, and constant thoughts of the one you desire?

Or are those traits actually signs of looming mania?

Turns out a group of psychiatrists has been looking at the love vs. mania conundrum. Members of the Human Sexuality Committee of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatryan organization dedicated to addressing the social needs of people with a mental disorderare trying to come up with helpful answers to guide individuals with bipolar.

Elizabeth Haase, MD, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and a member of the sexuality committee, says learning to tell the difference can help avert harmful choices.

When youre in a hypomanic or manic state, youre also more likely to feel youre in love, says Haase. You may then act on that feeling when making major long-term life decisions, not understanding your state had something to do with what you were feeling.

Living well with bipolar disorder requires certain adjustments. Making these healthy choices will help you keep your symptoms under control, minimize mood episodes, and take control of your life.

Managing bipolar disorder starts with proper treatment, including medication and therapy. But there is so much more you can do to help yourself on a day-to-day basis. Dating With Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder can become an issue from the very start of a relationship. When you first meet someone you like, it’s natural to want to make a good impression. Introducing the fact that you have bipolar disorder may not make for the most auspicious beginning. There is always the fear that you might scare the person off and lose the opportunity to get to know one another. At some point, though, you will need to let your partner know that you are bipolar.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to introduce your psychiatric problems on the first date,” Haltzman says. “But once you sense that there’s a mutual attraction and you decide to become more serious with this person, when you decide that you want to date this person exclusively, I think at that point each partner needs to come clear with what the package includes.”

    Healing A Troubled Relationship

Having a relationship when you live with bipolar disorder is difficult. But it’s not impossible. It takes work on the part of both partners to make sure the marriage survives.

The first step is to get diagnosed and treated for your condition. Your doctor can prescribe mood stabilizing medications, such as Lithium, with antidepressants to help control your symptoms. Therapy with a trained psychologist or social worker is also important. With therapy you can learn to control the behaviors that are putting stress on your relationship. Having your spouse go through therapy with you can help them understand why you act the way you do and learn better ways to react.

“I think the more a partner can learn about these things, the better role he or she can play,” Haltzman says. “Being involved in treatment can really help make the treatment for bipolar disorder a collaborative effort. And it will actually increase the sense of bonding.”

Though you may want to crawl into your self-imposed cocoon when you’re depressed, and feel like you’re on top of the world when you’re manic, it’s important to accept help when it’s offered. “I think,” Haltzman says, “it sometimes helps to have a contract.” With this contract, you can decide ahead of time under which circumstances you will agree to let your partner help you.

Id just remind myself to cool it its just a date, says freelance writer Laura Dattaro, 28, of New York City. Dattaro was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder right after her 23rd birthday. It can be easy to get carried away, especially if your mood is on the upswing. That excitement and good feeling may make the new person seem like your soul mate or new best friend, she says, and when that doesnt pan out its a big bummer.

Dr. Greenberg agrees, noting that in someone with bipolar disorder, that excitement can be heightened. So to those with bipolar who are entering the dating scene, she advises, “since bipolar people can be impulsive, you might want to prepare yourself for taking your time.” For example, you might not want to get too sexual prematurely.

Greenberg also says that your anxiety could be heightened. Leah Yegneswaran, 24, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20, agrees. I worry that Ill be triggered over the course of the date, says the University of Mary Washington student.

So Yegneswaran creates a backup plan to accommodate the possibility of an anxiety attack. I tell friends in the area of the date that I might need a safe space in case something happens and I need to crash somewhere, she says.

What Does It Mean If Your Partner Is Bipolar

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by intense mood changes. People with the illness switch back and forth from mania or hypomania to having episodes of depression.

The lifelong condition tends to run in families, although the cause of bipolar disease is unknown. However, it can often be successfully managed through treatment. There are two primary types of bipolar disorder:

Be Patient With Them And With Yourself

Not only is it important for you to be patient with your partner, but its equally important to take it easy on yourself. The more you learn about this disorder, the easier it is to be patient with your partner when theyre experiencing mania. However, caring for a spouse who has this disorder 24/7 can burn anyone out. Dont wait until youre about to explode with frustration to take a break. Patience is developed from habit. If youre feeling overwhelmed and youre able to, go to another room and breathe. Also, try to incorporate self-care into your routine by going for walks, practicing yoga, watching a favorite movie, or doing anything else you enjoy.

    Look For Evidence Of Perseverance

A powerful indicator of grit and tenacity is when a person persists and never gives up when they really want to achieve a life goal. Look for evidence of them keeping going in spite of enormous difficulties.

Great achievements by scientists and inventors all bear the hallmark of perseverance. We only have to think of Einstein, Edison and Nelson Mandela to get inspiration. The US Department of Education is in no doubt about how grit, tenacity and perseverance will be key success factors for youth in the 21st century.

    Is Anger A Frequent Occurrence

For Bipolar Loved Ones — What Everyone In a Bipolar Relationship Should Know

All too often, angry reactions which may seem to be excessive are a sign that there are underlying issues. Do not think that every person who just snaps and throws his/her weight around mentally and physically is just reacting normally. Everyone has an occasional angry outburst when driving or when things go pear-shaped.

But if this is almost a daily occurrence, then you need to discover why and maybe avoid that person. Too often, anger will escalate to violent and aggressive behavior. You do not want to be near someone who thinks violence can solve personal or global problems.

    Practicing Good Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is one of the most important factors in coping with bipolar disorder. This means going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time, even on the weekends.

It is a good idea to avoid caffeine in the afternoon and stay away from screens before bed. That way, people can fall asleep more easily.

Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest triggers of manic and depressive episodes. If people with bipolar disorder are able to avoid sleep deprivation, they may be able to reduce the frequency of their episodes.

    Concerned About Bipolar Disorder

In my opinion, everyone benefits from getting to know someone who is unlike them. I believe individuals with bipolar or any mental health condition add depth and understanding to a persons life. We live in a society right now that lacks empathy and is void of emotion. The most empathetic people I know live with bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety.

My dating experiences have opened me up to individuals who are very different from me as well. I have learned a lot from men Ive been romantically involved withincluding the ones who have treated me poorly. It is important for people to remember that challenges are inevitable in romantic relationships regardless of if your partner has a mental health condition or not.

My advice to those who live with bipolar disorder and ready to enter the dating world is to make sure you are confident in yourself. Do not assume you are the underdog because you live with a mental health condition. Self-love and self-acceptance are so important when it comes to dating with bipolar disorder.

I never used to be a big fan of self-help books, but two books that have really helped me gain confidence are: You Are a Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness And Start Living An Awesome Life by Jen Sincero, and The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson. Give them a read for yourself and see how you can incorporate self-love into your life.
