Taking Neurontin For Anxiety

Taking Gabapentin (Neurontin) for Anxiety & Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a complicated mental health problem that requires medical treatment. Those who have been prescribed Neurontin should discuss any concerns with the prescribing doctor as depending on your symptoms, the benefit may outweigh any perceived risks.

For those who do not have a diagnosis of bipolar, it is unlikely that Neurontin will be prescribed for anxiety. If you are considering asking your doctor about Neurontin to treat anxiety without bipolar, you may want to discuss other options with your physician. Remember it is most effective to always partner medication with some type of anti-anxiety strategy, to ensure that you can stop taking the medication someday and still live free of anxiety.

Gabapentin Overdose And Toxicity

Its possible to fatally overdose on gabapentin. Reports of gabapentin being abused alone, and with opioids, prompted the FDA to release a warning statement about the fatal risk of respiratory depression. Signs of overdose include:

  • Ataxia
  • Slurred speech

If you suspect an overdose, you need immediate medical treatment. The only way to remove the drug is through kidney dialysis in the emergency room.

Important Help And Support

In the manic phase of bipolar disorder, patients may engage in risky activities, such as fast driving or certain risky sports. They should be monitored and prevented from taking chances, especially in a car. Drinks and foods containing caffeine — tea, coffee, and cola– should be allowed in moderation. Avoid alcohol at all times. It is very important for a patient experiencing manic symptoms to receive prompt psychiatric assessment. Family members may need to contact the doctor, because oftentimes patients in a manic or hypomanic episode have little insight into their illness and may refuse treatment. But prompt intervention, including possible medication adjustments at an early point in an episode, may prevent further problems and the need for hospitalization.

Potential Serious Side Effects

According to the FDA, Neurontin may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Patients treated with any anti-seizure medications, like Neurontin, should be monitored for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and/or any unusual changes in mood or behavior.

If you are having suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 for support and assistance from a trained counselor. If you or a loved one are in immediate danger, call 911.

Neurontin may also cause a serious allergic reaction that can impact a person’s liver or blood cells, but alone, it does not cause jaundice or elevated liver enzymes. In fact, it is known to be a liver-friendly drug.

Signs of an allergic reaction may include:

  • Rash
  • Swollen glands that don’t get better
  • Swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue

Symptoms or signs of liver or blood cell problems may include:

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Out of the ordinary bruising or bleeding
  • Severe fatigue
  • Out of the ordinary muscle pain
  • Frequent infections

Neurontin can also make a person feel dizzy or sleepy. This can affect their driving abilities. According to the FDA and manufacturer, it’s important to discuss with your doctor whether it’s safe for you to drive while on Neurontin.

It’s also advised to avoid alcohol and not take other medications with Neurontin until you speak with your doctor, as this can worsen your sleepiness. People with renal

Whats The Difference Between Mood Stabilizers And Antidepressants

Can Gabapentin be Used for Anxiety, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder ...

Generally, mood stabilizers are also used for seizure disorder or migraine. This includes:

Atypical antipsychotics, such as Latuda or Zyprexa, can also be used to help stabilize mood. Doctors typically prescribe Lamictal as a mood stabilizer but they may also prescribe it off-label for bipolar depression.

The term antidepressant is traditionally used to denote selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors . These include:

  • fluoxetine
  • escitalopram
  • citalopram

Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors include venlafaxine and desvenlafaxine . Other antidepressants include bupropion and mirtazapine .

All the formal antidepressants tend to help increase levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine.

Overdose: What Happens If I Take Too Much Neurontin

Accidental or deliberate overdose of gabapentin can be dangerous. Overdose can cause symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Eye problems, including double vision
  • Sleepiness
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea

You may experience difficulty breathing, which can be life-threatening. Neurontin overdose can be treated with respiratory support. If necessary, the medication can be removed with an urgent hemodialysis procedure.

Behavioral And Emotional Complications

A small percentage of bipolar disorder people demonstrate heightened productivity or creativity during manic phases. More often, however, the distorted thinking and impaired judgment that are characteristic of manic episodes can lead to dangerous behavior including:

  • Spending money with reckless abandon, causing financial ruin in some cases
  • Angry, paranoid, and even violent behaviors
  • Openly promiscuous behavior

Such behaviors are often followed by low self-esteem and guilt, which are experienced during the depressed phases. During all stages of the illness, people need to be reminded that the mood disturbance will pass and that its severity can be diminished by treatment. Manic episodes also affect a person’s family members and social circle and can create difficulties and tensions in interfamily and interpersonal relationships, as well as the workplace.

Both the depressive as well as manic phases of bipolar disorder can have a significant negative impact on a person’s ability to function.

Some remedies like St. Johns wort can be found in health food stores or apothecaries. These are readily available over the counter and include such substances as omega-3 fatty acids, NAC, and valerian root.

These can be fine additional measures, but you should discuss with your doctor if youre thinking about adding supplements to your treatment regimen.

It may not be appropriate to rely on over-the-counter alternatives in place of traditional medication. Supplementary alternatives may hinder medication effects or increase side effects.

Most Common Questions About Gabapentin

  • Is there a generic version of gabapentin available?Since its manufacturer no longer has patent protection on the drug, there are generic versions on the market. They include Neurontin, Gralise, Gabarone, and Fanatrex.
  • How much does gabapentin cost?According to GoodRx.com, generic Gabapentin can cost between $7-$27 for ninety 100mg or 300mg capsules and between $14-$53 for ninety 400mg capsules.
  • What is the difference between gabapentin and other mood-stabilizing medications? This is kind of a trick question. Technically, even though we hear the term mood stabilizer quite often, especially in the context of bipolar disorder, the FDA doesnt officially recognize the term. Not only that but even researchers and psychiatrists cant come with a definition everyone agrees on. That said, lithium has significant differences from gabapentin. Lithium is in a class called bipolar disorder agents. Gabapentin is in a class called anticonvulsants. Their chemical structures are not the same and they work differently in the body. In addition to being used for bipolar, both have also been used for epilepsy.
  • Are there potential interaction issues for people taking carbamazepine, valproate or lithium? No interactions between gabapentin and valproate, carbamazepine or lithium have been reported.
  • Are there any interaction issues between gabapentin and alcohol?Alcohol has been known to increase the discomfort of Gabapentins side effects.
  • What Is Neurontin Used For

The Food and Drug Administration approved Neurontin for:

    • Add-on treatment to prevent partial-onset seizures , which are seizures from epilepsy that begin in a specific region of the brain, in adults and children over the age of 3
    • Adults with postherpetic neuralgia, a chronic pain condition that can develop after an acute bout of shingles has resolved

Healthcare providers usually prescribe Neurontin along with one or more AEDs for seizure prevention. It is not approved for use as a single therapy .

In postherpetic neuralgia, shingles causes a rash with severe superficial and deep pain along a skin patch that corresponds to a sensory spinal nerve. Postherpetic neuralgia can develop after the shingles rash has resolved and may remain for months or years, with persistent pain along the same affected patch of skin. Gabapentin can be prescribed to take daily to control and prevent postherpetic neuralgia pain.

Did The Neurontin Lawsuit Fuel Health Spending

    By Frederik Joelving, Reuters Health

    5 Min Read

NEW YORK – In 2004, Pfizer, the worlds largest drug company, agreed to plead guilty and pay more than $430 million to settle charges it had illegally marketed the epilepsy drug Neurontin for unapproved uses.

Now, a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry questions whether the lawsuit ended up fueling spending on other epilepsy drugs instead of curbing so-called off-label prescribing.

Doctors are allowed to prescribe drugs for uses that havent been approved by U.S. health regulators, but companies are prohibited from marketing their products for such purposes.

In recent years there have been several large lawsuits setting out to punish pharmaceutical companies for illegal off-label promotion, said Meredith Chace, a pharmaceutical policy fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston. We suspected that it might be possible that there could be unintended consequences of that.

She and her colleagues analyzed data from the federal health insurance programs Medicare and Medicaid spanning the years 2001 to 2005.

They focused on bipolar disorder, one of several disorders treated off-label with Neurontin .

Since the first media report about the off-label lawsuit surfaced in March 2002, Neurontins market share dropped from 21 percent of the total epilepsy drugs prescribed for bipolar disorder to 15 percent.

    Types Of Bipolar Disorder

Can Gabapentin Be Used For Anxiety

The American Psychiatric Association classifies bipolar disorder according to the pattern and severity of the symptoms. The main types of bipolar disorder are:

A bipolar classification can also have a “specifier” to describe certain features specific to that person’s condition.

For example, a person with bipolar I disorder may have a manic episode “with mixed features” to describe episodes of mania accompanied by severe depression. Similarly, a person with bipolar II disorder who experiences depression accompanied by mania or hypomania is described as having a depressive episode “with mixed features.”

The specifier “with anxious distress” is used to describe people who experience symptoms of anxiety that are not part of the bipolar diagnostic criteria.

How Do Mood Stabilizers Work For Bipolar Depression

Its not certain exactly how these medications work for mania or bipolar depression.

Its likely that the stabilization of membrane concentration gradients within the central nervous system stops charged particles from flowing down these gradients and inhibits neural impulse.

This theoretical principle explains the ability of these medications to modulate mood, but would also explain other clinical uses, such as seizure control or tapering from substances.

In bipolar disorder, mood stabilizers may help with depressive symptoms. They are sometimes combined with antidepressants, as long as the person is on a mood stabilizer to prevent episodes of mania or mixed episodes.

Which Works Better Neurontin Or Lyrica

When choosing between Neurontin and Lyrica, you must consider several factors, including side effects and interactions with medicines you already take. The answer to the question of which works better depends on what condition you are treating. Both Neurontin and Lyrica have several indications as well as off-label uses. Neurontin is used more frequently for seizures and mood disorders, but both drugs are used to treat nerve pain. Lyrica, however, is approved by the FDA to treat fibromyalgia, and it is prescribed more often than Neurontin for this condition.

A review of studies shows that Lyrica is more effective in treating fibromyalgia than Neurontin . On the other hand, a 2019 clinical trial shows that gabapentin works better than pregabalin at treating chronic sciatica .

What Are Reasons I Shouldnt Take Neurontin

You should not take Neurontin if you have ever had an adverse reaction to gabapentin.

Neurontin is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you take Neurontin and plan to become pregnant, discuss your treatment options with your healthcare provider. If you are taking Neurontin and have become pregnant, do not stop taking it, but call your provider to discuss whether you should continue to use Neurontin.

    Valproid Acid And Pregnancy

Valproic acid is not recommended in pregnancy, as it can cause birth defects and problems with your baby’s learning and behaviour.

If there’s a chance you could become pregnant while taking this medicine, your doctor will put you on Prevent, the valproate pregnancy prevention programme.

If you think you might already be pregnant, contact your doctor or nurse as soon as possible.

If you’re taking valproic acid for epilepsy or bipolar disorder and you become pregnant, do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor first. This is because your symptoms may get worse.

Your doctor may continue to prescribe valproic acid, but only if there’s no other suitable treatment for your epilepsy or bipolar disorder.

For pregnant women with recurrent migraine your doctor should offer you an alternative treatment to valproic acid.

You must have a review of your treatment every year. Contact your doctor or specialist now if you have not had one.
