Muscle And Joint Pain

Can Anxiety Make You Dizzy – STOP IT using the Oak Tree Method

Theres a confirmed link that depression can cause pain and pain can cause depression. Back pain and other joint and muscle pain are common physical symptoms of depression.

Depression and other mood disorders have been shown to alter pain perception, which can trigger or worsen pain. Fatigue and loss of interest common in depression can lead to being less active. This inactivity can cause muscle and joint pain and stiffness.

Finding relief from physical symptoms of depression may require more than one type of treatment. While some antidepressants may also alleviate some of your physical symptoms, such as pain, other symptoms may need to be treated separately.

Treatment may include:

Subsequent Dizziness Episodes Unleash Vicious Cycle

Once is scary enough, but for many vestibular patients it starts to happen more and more frequently, and it often strikes at random. Anxiety increases and the fear makes it hard to leave the house. What if it happens again while youre out? What if it happens while youre driving?

Of course, you go to the doctor, but there is a fair chance that your doctor wont know whats wrong with you either. The average vestibular patient sees 5 to 7 doctors before getting an accurate diagnosis, potentially suffering for years before getting any kind of helpful answer.

To make matters worse, your symptoms are invisible. You dont look sick, so everyone assumes youre fine, but theyre wrong. Youre suffering on every levelphysically, emotionally, psychologicallyand nobody really understands what youre going through. You worry that people will think you are exaggerating, or worse, that youre just lazy. Many do.

When you finally get a diagnosis, you take to the internet to learn more, but a lot of what you find conflicts with everything else you find, and its all terrifying.

The worst-case scenario becomes fixed in your mind, further amplifying your fear and anxiety. And all the while you are suffering. The vertigo and dizziness are getting worse, your quality of life is in shambles, and other symptoms are popping up as well.

There is an unbelievable amount of uncertainty and fear at every step of a vestibular patients journey.

Seek Out A Solution To Your Constipation

Constipation remedies include packing your diet with fiber-rich foods or taking a fiber supplement, or trying to get your body on a regular BM schedule so your gut knows it’s go-time.

The good old Squatty Potty, which really does come in some attractive and modern options these days, is also helpful for constipation.

“These stools bring the legs up, reducing straining time on the toilet, as well as the likelihood that blood will pool in extremities,” Dr. Brown says. Using one can help prevent that “head rush” feeling.

Slowed Reactions And Problems With Multitasking

Many individuals with vestibular disorders complain of trouble thinking. Most commonly people say that they can’t “multitask”. Recent work has suggested that this difficult thinking is measurable and significant. Redfern and others recently documented that reaction times are longer in patients with unilateral vestibular loss than normal controls . This effect increases when patients are attempting to balance. Normal subjects also exhibit longer reaction times when responding to postural perturbations. This appears to be due to a diversion of attention to postural demands, leaving less available for cognitive processing of other input .

Sometimes stimulants are helpful. Of course, stimulants may make anxiety worse, and may be addictive too, so their use should be judicious.

Hypertension How It Can Affect You

Vertigo Treatment with Drug

Having high blood pressure can be pretty worrying. Thats because sometimes, it doesnt have any apparent signs. The worst part is that it can quickly result in other complications if you leave it unattended for a long time.;

Unfortunately, according to CDCs latest reports, hypertension is a severe health problem that affects about 50 percent of the US population. CDC further explains that only 25 percent have complete control of their high blood pressure problems. Hypertension, especially the malignant type, causes various symptoms that usually include dizziness or lightheadedness, vertigo attacks, and loss of balance. These disorienting symptoms rarely occur until the condition has already progressed.;

Ending Anxiety And Dizziness

There are very effective strategies to help you manage anxiety and reduce the risk for dizziness. The treatment plan that is best for you will depend on your specific circumstance, but treatments like physical therapy are beneficial for anyone who wants to reduce anxiety and dizziness.

Many people may have the best results with a combination of treatments. For example, patient education, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy has been shown to be more effective than treatment with any one therapy. In addition, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise have been shown to increase treatment efficacy.

The Physical Symptoms Of Depression

Following are some examples of physical symptoms typical in depression:

1. Headaches: Common in people with depression, even; if you have migraine headaches, depression may make the pain feel worse.

2. Back pain: Depression can either cause back pain or cause suffers with back pain feel worse.

3. Muscle aches and pain can be worsened for sufferers with depression or caused by the same.

4. Chest pain: Never be your own doctor. In the event of chest pain, either see your MD or go to the emergency room. If a heart attack of condition is ruled out the pain might be the result of depression.

5. Stomach problems such as feeling, nauseous or having diarrhea or chronic constipation could be due to depression.

6. Exhaustion and fatigue regardless of the amount of sleep you get can result from depression. This is equally true for the opposite, loss of sleep.

7. Insomnia: Many people with depression complain that they do not sleep soundly.

8. Any change in appetite or weight can be caused by depression.

9. Dizziness or light-headed.

It is now known that brain chemistry plays an important role in how we feel, both emotionally and physically. For that reason, people experience such things as pain with varying intensity and tenacity.

Because depression and pain are so closely linked, pain relief can diminish depression and reduced depression can help alleviate pain.

Remember, the first step is to speak to your MD.

Models For Associations Between Psychiatriac Disorders And Vestibular Dysfunction

Simon and associates reviewed three explanatory models regarding the known association between anxiety and dizziness.

  • Psychosomatic model — a primary psychiatric disturbance causes dizziness
  • hyperventilation and hyperarrousal increased vestibular sensitivity.
  • Somatopsychic model — a primary inner ear disturbance causes anxiety.
  • signals from the inner ear are misinterpreted as signifying immediate danger, which increases anxiety. Increased anxiety increases misinterpretation. Conditioning makes it persistent.
  • Network alarm model — renamed variant of somatopsychic model
  • Panic is triggered by a “false alarm” via afferents to the locus ceruleus , which then triggers a “neuronal network”, including limbic, midbrain and prefrontal areas. This explanation seems to us to be the “somatopsychic” model, renamed and attached to a specific brain localization.
  • You May Have A Heart Condition Or Circulation Problems

    What

Changes in blood volume affect the blood flow to your brain and inner ear, so regular dizziness â especially the kind that happens right after you stand up â could be an early sign of conditions like heart arrhythmia, low blood pressure, and more, according to Mayo Clinic. I know this sounds scary, so resist the urge to panic and just go see a doctor. That’s your best bet for anything â even if your symptoms prove to be nothing.

What To Do When Stress Or Anxiety Cause Dizzy Spells

It’s as though the ground is shifting under your feet, or you or your surroundings are spinning. It may last hours or even days, or sometimes just a few seconds or minutes. In any case a dizzy spell is frightening.

Dizziness can make you feel unsteady on your feet – whether you’re walking or simply standing – and is often accompanied by nausea and impaired vision, says the German Brain Foundation . It’s one of the most common symptoms of illness but its cause isn’t always physiological, in which case the term “psychogenic dizziness” has typically been used.

Dr Frank Erbguth, DHS president and medical director of the Department of Neurology at South Nuremberg Hospital, is among the experts who prefer the term “functional dizziness” instead. “‘Psychogenic’ implies that the dizziness is merely imagined,” he explains. It’s not – stress and depression can trigger functional or chronic dizziness.

“Many people with an anxiety disorder have dizzy spells as well,” says Dr Claas Lahmann, a member of the German Society of Psychosomatic Medicine and Medical Psychotherapy and medical director of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the University of Freiburg Medical Centre.

Something’s out of balance in the lives of people with functional dizziness, who often have a severe emotional conflict. It can result from the death of a loved one, for example, or involve stress situations. In some cases depression or an anxiety disorder plays a role as well.

    You’re Taking A New Medication

Anyone who’s ever sat through an antibiotic commercial is well aware that most pharmaceuticals come with a hefty list of potential side effects. If you’ve ever actually listened to that list , you may have noticed that “dizziness” is a regular offender. Per Scientific American, dizziness is one of the most common side effects of prescription drugs. If a short-term antibiotic is making you dizzy, you can probably hack it for a few days, but if a new, longer-term prescription has you feeling off your game, it’s probably worth it to check in with your doctor.

Its Both An Acute And Chronic Problem

Perhaps the biggest issue of all is that the anxiety creates a negative feedback loop.

The dizziness and vertigo cause the initial feeling of panic and anxiety, which in turn causes the vertigo and dizziness to worsen and happen more frequently. This only causes more anxiety, at which point the vicious cycle repeats.

In a lot of ways, the panic and anxiety experienced during acute vertigo or dizziness is like throwing gasoline on a fire. It multiplies your suffering at the height of an already horrible experience, while also worsening your symptoms on an ongoing basis.

Fortunately, its not all bad news.

Because the balance issues and anxiety are so closely intertwined, if you work to get your anxiety under control, the severity of your dizziness, vertigo, and other symptoms should improve as well. At the very least, you will be able to cope a lot more effectively.

The best strategy is to immediately start taking steps to reduce your anxiety.

So to help you get started, Ive put together a list of strategies that have helped me manage my own anxiety-related Menieres disease, a vestibular disorder Ive lived with for nearly a decade.

Some of the strategies are best used during acute episodes of dizziness or vertigo, while others are meant to bring overall stress and anxiety levels down throughout your life.

Antidepressant Withdrawal Can Look Like Depression

Discontinuation symptoms can include anxiety and depression. Since these may be the reason you were prescribed antidepressants in the first place, their reappearance may suggest that you’re having a relapse and need ongoing treatment. Here’s how to distinguish discontinuation symptoms from relapse:

    • Discontinuation symptoms emerge within days to weeks of stopping the medication or lowering the dose, whereas relapse symptoms develop later and more gradually.

    • Discontinuation symptoms often include physical complaints that aren’t commonly found in depression, such as dizziness, flulike symptoms, and abnormal sensations.

    • Discontinuation symptoms disappear quickly if you take a dose of the antidepressant, while drug treatment of depression itself takes weeks to work.

    • Discontinuation symptoms resolve as the body readjusts, while recurrent depression continues and may get worse.

If symptoms last more than a month and are worsening, it’s worth considering whether you’re having a relapse of depression.

Dizziness From Anxiety Is Not Dangerous

    Generally, when anxiety is causing your dizziness, there is much less concern for serious harm. If your dizziness occurs while operating machinery or a motor vehicle, please stop all activity immediately. It is best to determine the cause of the symptoms rather than to push through and possibly harm yourself and/or others. Overall, dizziness is not likely to have long term effects on brain function.;

Should I Worry That My Child Will Commit Suicide

National surveys from the government show the overall risk. In 2019, for example, nearly 9% of high school students attempted suicide at least once over the course of a year. Thinking about suicide also continued to rise from previous years . Although less common, young children do attempt suicide as well.

Watch your child closely for the warning signs of suicidal behavior, including:

    • Focus on death and dying.
    • Giving away possessions.
    • Combination of the two.

When Should I Call The Doctor

What Everyone Should Know About Dizziness

Call a healthcare provider if your child has any signs of depression or anxiety. If your child is showing signs of suicide, get help right away. You can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800.273.8255. This hotline connects you to a national network of local crisis centers for free and confidential emotional support. The centers support people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an emergency, call 911.

    A note from Cleveland Clinic

While it may be difficult to watch your child dealing with depression or anxiety, help is available. The right treatment can ensure your child continues to grow and thrive throughout their development. In addition to medical help, you can support your child by making sure they have a healthy environment at home, at school and in the community. Always let your child know they can communicate openly and honestly about their feelings.
