How Is It Treated

Bipolar disorder is treatable. With treatment, which includes medicines and counseling, you can feel better.

You may need to try several medicines to find the combination that works for you.

  • Most people with bipolar disorder need to take a medicine called a mood stabilizer every day.
  • Medicines called antipsychotics can help get a manic phase under control.
  • Antidepressants are used carefully for episodes of depression, because they cause some people to move into a manic phase.

Counseling for you and your family is also an important treatment. It can help you cope with some of the work and relationship issues that the illness may cause.

You can do a few things on your own to help deal with bipolar disorder. These include regular activity, getting enough sleep, and learning to recognize early signs of highs and lows.

People often stop taking their medicines during a manic phase because they feel good. But this is a mistake. You must take your medicines regularly, even if you are feeling better.

Medical Evidence Required For Disability Based On Bipolar Disorder

At the SSAs request, your treating doctor should submit to the SSA your psychiatric medical record showing the entire history of your bipolar disorder, including documentation of any severe or violent manic episodes. Your psychiatric record should include all treatments attempted, including any mood-stabilizing medications that youve tried, such as lithium, carbamazepine, or valproic acid, what your current prescribed therapy is, and whether you regularly comply with the prescribed therapy . Your medical record should also include the efficacy and side effects of each medication, and how their side effects, along with your symptoms, affect your daily activities, your functioning, and your ability to hold a job.

If there is evidence in your medical file that your doctor suspects your use of alcohol or drugs compounds your emotional problems, this can affect your claim. Learn more in our article on how alcoholism and drug dependence affect disability claims.

How Much Does Tms Therapy Cost

Patients FAQs » How much does TMS therapy cost?

As mental health gains greater acceptance in todays society, more and more people are thankfully getting the help they needand insurance providers are meeting this demand with an ever-expanding range of therapies covered by their plans, lowering the costs of treatments such as BrainsWays transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS.

TMS costs vary according to your insurance plan, the condition being treated, and the recommended number of sessions. However, together with its proven desirable impact on mental health conditions, TMS has been found to be cost-effective when compared to other treatment courses.

TMS is covered differently by insurance providers around the world and has been FDA cleared for treating major depressive disorder in the U.S. since 2013. In a more recent development, BrainsWays TMS treatment was FDA cleared to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2018.

Where covered by insurance, patients will typically incur the co-pay per treatment session specified in their insurance plan. Patients should speak with their mental health provider to find out about payment options, as in some cases opportunities to create single case agreements with insurance companies can also cover the treatment cost.

At present, TMS has never been more widely acceptedand readily availablefor those who might benefit from it.

Qualifying For Disability Based On Reduced Functional Capacity

If you dont qualify under the SSAs requirements for bipolar disorder, above, the SSA must next consider to what extent your bipolar symptoms impair your ability to work . The SSA will give you a rating of the type of work it thinks you can do . This is called your mental residual functional capacity .

If the SSA finds that you cannot perform even unskilled work , the SSA might grant you benefits under a medical-vocational allowance. But if you didnt meet the official listing above, its likely the SSA will find that you can do at least unskilled work. And since there are so many unskilled jobs in our economy, its unlikely that youll be granted disability benefits unless you are 55 or older and have no more than an elementary school education. For these reasons, most claimants applying for disability benefits for bipolar disorder either qualify under the official listing above or they dont qualify at all. However, if you have a physical impairment in addition to bipolar disorder, your physical RFC combined with your mental RFC can rule out so many unskilled jobs that there arent any left you can do.

Being An Advocate For Yourself

What Is Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that is characterized by unusual shifts in mood, energy and activity levels. People who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder often have varying abilities to carry out daily tasks. Bipolar disorder involves clear changes in mood, from manic, highly energized periods to more depressed, sad times.

There are four primary types of bipolar disorder. They include:

1. Bipolar I Disorder: the most severe type of bipolar disorder, this type includes manic episodes that last for at least seven days or that are so severe that they require hospitalization. Depressive episodes usually last for at least two weeks.

2. Bipolar II Disorder: this type has both depressive and manic episodes, but with less extreme manic periods.

3. Cyclothymic Disorder: also known as cyclothymia, this type involves numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms for at least two years.

4. Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders: this type involves bipolar symptoms that do not meet the criteria for one of the other diagnoses.

Signs and symptoms of a manic bipolar disorder episode include:

  • Feel very up, high, or elated
  • Have a lot of energy
  • Have increased activity levels
  • Eat too much or too little
  • Feel tired or slowed down
  • Think about death or suicide

Bipolar disorder affects people in different ways. While medication and psychotherapy can help to control the symptoms of bipolar disorder, it may not completely eliminate them.

The Importance Of Getting Treatment For Depression

Bipolar Disorder – When we use Lithium

The SSA will review your medical records to determine if you have been prescribed any medication for your depression or bipolar disorder and whether this medication effectively controls your symptoms. If you have never been given medication, the SSA might consider your condition to be mild and not disabling.

In addition, if your doctor has recommended therapy or medication for your condition and you chose not to follow the doctors advice, the SSA might find you in noncompliance. You can be denied disability benefits for not complying with your doctors treatment recommendations. However, a good reason for not following a doctors recommendation is if you are financially unable to pay for therapy sessions. For more information, see Nolos article on being denied benefits for failing to follow treatment.

Types Of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar I. This is the classic form of the illness. It causes episodes of mania and depression that keep coming back. The depression may last for a short time or for months. You may then go back to feeling normal for a time, or you may go right into a manic high.
  • Bipolar II. With this form, you will have depression just as in bipolar I. But the manic highs are less severe . People with bipolar II have more depressive lows than hypomanic highs.

Some people may have bipolar disorder with mixed symptoms. Their highs and lows of mania and depression occur together. This makes the disorder challenging to treat and very frustrating for you and for those around you. It can also lead to hospitalization if your daily functioning becomes impaired.

If you have rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, you may have at least four episodes of depression, mania, or both within a 12-month period. You may go directly from a low to a high. Or you may have a short time lapse between the two extreme moods.

In addition to changes in mood, some people with bipolar disorder also have symptoms of , , or symptoms of .

Medicines For Bipolar Disorder

Several medicines are available to help stabilise mood swings.

These are commonly called mood stabilisers and include:

  • anticonvulsant medicines
  • antipsychotic medicines

If you’re already taking medicine for bipolar disorder and you develop depression, your GP will check you’re taking the correct dose. If you’re not, they’ll change it.

Episodes of depression are treated slightly differently in bipolar disorder, as taking antidepressants alone may lead to a relapse.

Most guidelines suggest depression in bipolar disorder can be treated with just a mood stabiliser.

But antidepressants are commonly used alongside a mood stabiliser or antipsychotic.

If your GP or psychiatrist recommends you stop taking bipolar disorder medicine, the dose should be gradually reduced over at least 4 weeks, and up to 3 months if you’re taking an antipsychotic or lithium.

If you have to stop taking lithium for any reason, talk to your GP about taking an antipsychotic or valproate instead.
