How To Cope With Anxiety Caused By Hair Loss

How to Deal with Anxiety and Start Living a Happy Life | Jesse GIUNTA RAFEH | TEDxSouthLakeTahoe

The first and most important part of dealing with this kind of anxiety is to refuse to surrender to it. Whatever you do, make sure that you are doing something about it, and not just watching as more and more of your scalp becomes exposed.

Here are a few ways to go about it.

See a physician. As soon as you notice definite hair loss, start by scheduling an appointment with a physician. They should do some basic blood work to determine if nutrient deficiencies could be behind your hair loss. Once this possibility is eliminated, you can be sure yours is purely male pattern baldness and not anything else.

Educate yourself. There are many ways to deal with hair loss. From hair transplants, scalp micropigmentation, and hair growth medications. Seek credible, reputable sources of information which will arm you with sufficient knowledge on the various options available, procedures, and costs involved.

Even if all you are doing is reading about what you can do, the fact that you are taking action helps to alleviate stress and reduces related anxiety.

Seek professional help. If the anxiety is so much that it interferes with your ability to go about your daily life, there is no shame in seeking the services of a psychiatrist or therapist. These are professionals who can help you come up with personalized coping mechanisms.

Coping Tips For Living With Severe Anxiety

Whether you live with an anxiety disorder or have found the events of 2020 affecting your mood, managing your mental health is more important than ever. Experiencing a sudden spike in anxiety is a common issueone thats being experienced by more and more people.

Tonya Crombie, Ph.D., author of Stop Worrying About Your Anxious Child, points to a poll released by the American Psychiatric Association that reveals that 62% of Americans feel more anxious than they did at this time last year. That marks a sizable increase over APA polls of the past three years, in which the number has ranged between 32% and 39%.

When you consider the significant stressors brought on by a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, social unrest, bitter political divisions, and a contested presidential election, Crombie says, it is completely understandable why so many more people are feeling more anxious than ever before.

Here, learn what causes a sudden onset of anxiety, and how can it be managed.

I Stopped Trying To Change The World And Focus Instead On Changing Myself

How I Overcame My Crippling Anxiety

One major way I was finally able to keep my anxiety in check was to stop obsessing about everything that was wrong with the world and other people.

Other people are out of your control.

Thats a losing formula.

You dont make people change you inspire them to change through your example.

So now, I focus solely on improving myself and only myself.

Im also learning to let go of perfection and concentrate instead on progress.

Overall, this attitude has made me a much calmer, peaceful, and less anxious person.

Understanding Anxiety From Hair Loss

Managing storm anxiety before it strikes crippling fear

Whether you have experienced it or not, the exact reasons connecting hair loss and subsequent anxiety may be blurry. You know that progressive hair loss is making you feel terrible but cant quite put a finger on why it has such an overwhelming effect on your emotions.

According to experts, we can pin it on our culture and a loss of identity.

Culture: Todays society associates hair with attractiveness, youth, health, and vitality. When you start to lose hair, it is devastating because it signals an end to these valued traits.

Loss of identity: A key part of your identity is your appearance. Just like your name, and perhaps outstanding physical characteristics. It defines you. If you have always had thick brown hair, anyone looking for the brunette guy will be pointed in your direction. When you start going bald, that identity changes.

Hair loss, especially balding, is so devastating because it changes how you look to an extent that it seems like you dont recognize the man looking back at you in the mirror.

Add to this the sense of powerlessness. For men who have grown accustomed to taking control of every challenge they face, hair loss can be disorienting.

How Seeking Control Consumed Me

Like so many of the millions of people experiencing anxiety worldwide, I wanted to have control over my life. I became obsessed with losing weight, and although I was never diagnosed with an eating disorder, I displayed some worrying symptoms.

I would weigh myself three or four times a day and divide all foods into categories of good or bad. Whole foods like chicken and broccoli were good, and anything processed was bad. I learned that foods like rice, oats, sweetcorn, and potatoes could spike your blood sugar and lead to cravings, so those foods became bad too.

The cravings came anyway, and I reacted by either chewing junk food and spitting it into the trash or eating large amounts of food until I felt sick.

I visited the gym every day, sometimes up to three hours at a time, lifting weights and doing cardio. At one point, my menstrual cycle stopped.

My body image issues then turned into social anxiety. I gave up alcohol to improve my mood, but without a vodka in my hand I found it difficult to unwind and open up, even around my best friends. This escalated to a bigger fear of having to explain myself to strangers. Why wasnt I drinking? Why wasnt I working anymore? Anxiety made me catastrophize and assume the worst possible outcome, leaving me terrified to socialize in public.

Maintain A Nutritious Balance In The Diet

Yet another one of the tips to manage crippling anxiety is to always eat your meals on time. Maintaining a proper balance in your meals helps ensure that you dont struggle physically as well as struggling through mentally.

The process might seem like a tough nut to crack but it does come a lot in handy in handling the signs and symptoms associated with the condition.

For someone suffering from crippling anxiety, it is common for them to not be very fond of eating but you need to train your mind of the importance of food and why it is necessary to consume a balanced and nutritious diet.

Do Let Them Know Youre Here For Them

When learning how to help someone with anxiety, you may want to explain to the person that youve noticed that they seem more anxious lately and that you want to help.

This will typically come as a welcome relief to the person, as they realise that they dont have to carry the burden of their anxiety alone. Having this conversation gives the person a chance to see that they have people who care about them, who want to listen and who want them to feel better. Someone suffering from anxiety could also tell you ways you can help manage their anxiety symptoms.

Tone Your Inner Power Daily

Think of your inner power as a muscle just like any other muscle. The more you use it, the more toned it becomes and the more you are able to accomplish. Every time you practice a healthy life strategy, you actually increase your ability to conquer your anxiety. What you couldnt do yesterday, you can do today. With practice, your new skills will become automatic. This is how you create lasting freedom from anxiety.

In the words of Aristotle: We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Be Aware Of Negative And Judgmental Self

Are you staying late at the office and missing time with friends because your internal critic is telling you that if you dont get this project done, you are a lazy, underperforming blob of an employee? This type of self-talk is not productive or healthy.

You can overcome this by becoming aware of the story you are telling yourself and the judgment that accompanies it. This is the most important step by far. These stories and criticisms we tell ourselves that keep us working crazy hours and provoke toxic anxiety are the same cockamamie stories that prevent us from taking the time we need to take care of ourselves.

What Is Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder is a common type of anxiety disorder. A person with social anxiety disorder feels symptoms of anxiety or fear in certain or all social situations, such as meeting new people, dating, being on a job interview, answering a question in class, or having to talk to a cashier in a store. Doing everyday things in front of peoplesuch as eating or drinking in front of others or using a public restroomalso causes anxiety or fear. The person is afraid that he or she will be humiliated, judged, and rejected.

The fear that people with social anxiety disorder have in social situations is so strong that they feel it is beyond their ability to control. As a result, it gets in the way of going to work, attending school, or doing everyday things. People with social anxiety disorder may worry about these and other things for weeks before they happen. Sometimes, they end up staying away from places or events where they think they might have to do something that will embarrass them.

Some people with the disorder do not have anxiety in social situations but have performance anxiety instead. They feel physical symptoms of anxiety in situations such as giving a speech, playing a sports game, or dancing or playing a musical instrument on stage.

I Changed My Diet And Adopted The Wahls Protocol

Anxiety may be one of the results of prolonged, untreated stress. And some common symptoms associated with both stress and anxiety include :

  • High blood pressure
  • Memory problems
  • Depression, etc.

After I switched to the Wahls protocol, a paleo diet plan to treat chronic autoimmune conditions, most of these symptoms went away after only a few weeks.

When I follow the diet, my anxiety is in check: my body is completely calm, quiet, and at peace. And it reflects on my mind.

The only issue is: I still struggle to stay consistent with this diet and I have regular ups and downs. Also, Im still stuck at level 1 . But its a work in progress.
