One important thing to remember is that virtually any object can become a fear object. The names of specific phobias are often formed as nonce words, or words coined for a single occasion only.
These names themselves are often formed by taking a Greek prefix that represents the fear object and adding the -phobia suffix. Because of this, any attempt at a completely exhaustive list of phobias would simply be an exercise in futility. Any list of phobias could grow with the addition of newly coined terms for previously unnamed specific phobias.
While listing all of the phobias that may exist is not possible, it can be helpful to look through a list of some of the more commonly described phobias. As you can see by looking at this list, almost any object or situation can become the source of fear.

Do I have a phobia? Answering this question isnt always as simple as you might think. Even if you show a strong fear of something you may be wondering if that fear needs to reach a certain level before it can be considered a phobia, or you may wonder if what you are experiencing could overlap with another anxiety disorder. And what about things that are genuinely scary, like snakes, or spiders, or high places- does being afraid of them count as a phobia?
As with any anxiety disorder, receiving an official diagnosis from a qualified doctor or mental health professional is the best way to know for sure if you have a phobia. However, answering the three questions below can give you a good idea of whether fear is something that needs addressing in your life.
What Is A Phobia
Almost everyone has an irrational fear or twoof spiders, for example, or your annual dental checkup. For most people, these fears are minor. But when fears become so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with your normal life, theyre called phobias.
A phobia is an intense fear of something that, in reality, poses little or no actual danger. Common phobias and fears include closed-in places, heights, highway driving, flying insects, snakes, and needles. However, you can develop phobias of virtually anything. While most phobias develop in childhood, they can also develop in later life.
If you have a phobia, you probably realize that your fear is irrational, yet you still cant control your feelings. Just thinking about the feared object or situation may make you anxious. And when youre actually exposed to the thing you fear, the terror is automatic and overwhelming. The experience is so nerve-wracking that you may go to great lengths to avoid itinconveniencing yourself or even changing your lifestyle. If you have claustrophobia, for example, you might turn down a lucrative job offer if you have to ride the elevator to get to the office. If you have a fear of heights, you might drive an extra 20 miles in order to avoid a tall bridge.

Is Your Fear Specific
What causes you to feel afraid? Is it certain specific situations or do you feel a level of anxiety and fear about many different things? Sometimes the answer to this question is obvious: if you are terrified of cats and show no unusual levels of fear around anything else then its likely you have a phobia of cats.
If your fear is a little more general than that, but you still think it might be triggered by something specific, try to narrow it down by imagining different situations. If you always feel afraid when going to the doctors, mentally go through a normal visit and pay attention to which aspects cause you to feel afraid. It could be that you are afraid or being touched during a physical examination, or that you fear the sight of blood, or catching an illness, or being injected by a hypodermic needle. Or you could be afraid of doctors in general. Thinking about what you are afraid will happen can also help determine the source of your fear.
Of course, some phobias can overlap, and it is also possible to suffer from a phobia as well as a more general anxiety disorder. But thinking it through in this way can give you a good impression to use as a starting point.

Once youve identified your negative thoughts, evaluate them. Use the following example to get started.
Negative thought: The elevator will break down and Ill get trapped and suffocate.
Ask yourself the following 4 questions:
1. Is there any evidence that contradicts my negative thought?
Yes, for example: People are currently using the elevator and it hasnt broken down.
Even if it did break down, Ive never heard of anyone dying from suffocation in an elevator. There are air vents which would stop the air from running out.

To be diagnosed with a phobia, you will probably have most of the following symptoms:
- You are more afraid than most people of a specific object, situation, or activity.
- You feel stressed or have a panic attack when you are near the object or situation.
- If you are a teenager or adult, you understand that the amount of fear you have about the object or situation is not reasonable.
- You avoid the object, situation, or activity that you are afraid of.
- The fear and stress that you feel make it hard for you to do normal activities such as going to work every day or doing grocery shopping.
