“Panic attacks always pass and the symptoms are not a sign of anything harmful happening,” he says. “Tell yourself that the symptoms you’re experiencing are caused by anxiety.”
He says don’t look for distractions. “Ride out the attack. Try to keep doing things. If possible, it’s important to try to remain in the situation until the anxiety has subsided.”

While panic attacks are not usually medically dangerous, Saranga says theyre pure torture for the person going through them. The physiological symptoms of a panic attack include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, increased heart rate and blood pressure, shaking, and some people will get hot while others feel cold, dizziness, muscle tension, an out of body sensation and a feeling of losing control.
In addition, there are a number of psychological symptoms experienced at the same time, including a rush of negative thoughts that tell the person they need to escape the situation they are in and get someplace safe, says Saranga.
