Is There A Link Between Birth Control Pills And Depression

Can switching birth control cause anxiety?

Depression and mood swings are commonly reported side effects of birth control pills. Researchers have been unable to prove or disprove a link. The research is often conflicting.

A pilot showed that depression is the most common reason women stop using birth control pills. It also found women using combination birth control pills were significantly more depressed than a similar group of women not taking the pills.

Despite the lack of a definite link, many women report feeling depressed while taking birth control pills. According to the AGO study, this may be due to the inconsistent use of the word depression. This could also be due to variance in pill formulations

The perceived connection may also be due to a large number of women with depression. Approximately 12 million women in the United States experience clinical depression each year. Although exact numbers cant be confirmed, its likely that many of those women take birth control pills. In some cases, the timing of depression may be a coincidence.

One showed birth control pills may improve mood swings. The study used data from 6,654 non-pregnant, sexually active women ages 25 to 34 taking hormonal contraception. These women had fewer symptoms of depression and were less likely to report a suicide attempt than women using less effective contraception or no contraception.

Adrenal And Thyroid Health

The pill, the ring, IUDs, implants and the patch all mess with your thyroid and your adrenal glands. We know that these also affect mood.

Hypothyroid women are more prone to having depression and anxiety.

The adrenal glands help regulate inflammation. When function is compromised, this can also lead to mood symptoms.

Caffeine Increases Stress Hormones

Most people who deal with anxiety would agree that they have too much stress in their lives and caffeine adds to the burden.

Caffeine affects the body much like stress by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of stress hormones.

” Some psychiatrists recommend that routine psychiatric assessments should include examining caffeine consumption since removing caffeine can be more beneficial than prescribing anti-anxiety drugs.

Caffeine consumption can more than double the blood levels of the stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine.

My Nightmare On The Pill

Millions of women rely on the contraceptive pill and many are happy with it – but some find it has a devastating effect on their mental health. Here Vicky Spratt, deputy editor of The Debrief, describes years of depression, anxiety and panic as she tried one version of the pill after another.

I sat in the GP’s office with my mum and told her that I’d been having my period for three weeks. She told me that the contraceptive pill might help. She warned that it wouldn’t protect me from sexually transmitted infections and told me that if I had unprotected sex I could get cervical cancer, so I’d best use it wisely. She had to say that, though I was 14 and sex was very much not on the agenda.

My prescription was printed in reception. And then, a three-month supply of the combined pill was mine. Picking up the green foil-covered packets full of tiny yellow pills felt like a rite of passage – I was a woman now. In the plastic pockets was the sugar-coated distillation of feminism, of women’s liberation, of medical innovation.

This is where it all began, 14 years ago. I then played what I call pill roulette for more than a decade, trying different brands with varying degrees of success and disaster. It was around this time that I also developed anxiety, depression and serious mood swings which, on and off, have affected me throughout my adult life.

Fight/flight Response: One Of The Root Causes Of Panic Attacks

I am sure most of you have heard of the fight/flight response as an explanation for one of the root causes of panic attacks. Have you made the connection between this response and the unusual sensations you experience during and after a panic attack episode?

Anxiety is a response to a danger or threat. It is so named because all of its effects are aimed toward either fighting or fleeing from the danger. Thus, the sole purpose of anxiety is to protect the individual from harm. This may seem ironic given that you no doubt feel your anxiety is actually causing you great harmperhaps the most significant of all the causes of panic attacks.

However, the anxiety that the fight/flight response created was vital in the daily survival of our ancient ancestorswhen faced with some danger, an automatic response would take over that propelled them to take immediate action such as attack or run. Even in todays hectic world, this is still a necessary mechanism. It comes in useful when you must respond to a real threat within a split second.

Anxiety is a built-in mechanism to protect us from danger. Interestingly, it is a mechanism that protects but does not harman important point that will be elaborated upon later.

The Pill And Emotional Health

For decades, many women have complained the OCPs cause such extreme moodiness and other emotional issues that they quit taking them. Studies back up their claims and show that, in some women, taking the Pill is associated with a wide range of mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, fatigue, compulsive behavior, anger, and neurotic symptoms.

Scientists from Denmark found that women ages 15-34 taking OCPs were 23% more likely to start taking antidepressants for the first time than non-OCP users. In fact, studies have shown that bouts of depression have been reported by 16-56% of women on hormonal birth control, which depletes serotonin.

Oral contraceptives also affect mental health indirectly. They put you at greater risk of autoimmune diseases and elevated cortisol levels, both of which are associated with an increased incidence of anxiety and depression. They have also been linked to lower levels of testosterone, which is associated with low libido, depression, and memory problems. And low-testosterone problems can remain even after stopping OCPs, meaning you could be facing long-term sexual and mental health problems.

Synthetic birth control can also disrupt the gut microbiome and interfere with the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals, according to a 2015 study. This can lead to nutritional deficiencies as well as psychological issues because your gut health can affect your mental health.

Depression Decreased Libido And The Contraceptive Pill

In their response the MHRA also stated that psychiatric side effects such as depressed mood, depression and decreased libido are recognised adverse reactions for most hormonal contraceptives and are in general listed in the Patient Information Leaflet that accompanies every medicine. With the fact that the NHS refer to them as mood changes and call them disadvantages in mind, The Debrief decided to ask The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence , who publish guidelines for healthcare professionals in England, whether they had ever developed any specific guidance on how hormonal contraception and mental health issues intersect in female patients?

Their answer was no. In a statement they said:

NICE produces a range of guidance and information products, including clinical guidelines, which are recommendations on how healthcare and other professionals should care for people with specific conditions. The majority of topics for our work programmes are referred to us by the Department of Health and NHS England but occasionally other government departments such as Public Health England ask us to develop guidance on specific topics. I can confirm that we have not been asked to develop a guideline on treating patients who feel that they are experiencing mental health problems which may be caused by their hormonal contraceptive, including contraceptive pill or hormonal coil.

Other Physical Effects Of Panic Attacks:

Now that weve discussed some of the primary physiological causes of panic attacks, there are a number of other effects that are produced by the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, none of which are in any way harmful.

For example, the pupils widen to let in more light, which may result in blurred vision, or seeing stars, etc. There is a decrease in salivation, resulting in dry mouth. There is decreased activity in the digestive system, which often produces nausea, a heavy feeling in the stomach, and even constipation. Finally, many of the muscle groups tense up in preparation for fight or flight and this results in subjective feelings of tension, sometimes extending to actual aches and pains, as well as trembling and shaking.

Overall, the fight/flight response results in a general activation of the whole bodily metabolism. Thus, one often feels hot and flushed and, because this process takes a lot of energy, the person generally feels tired and drained.

  • It can give you a sense of control

As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, I rely on my IUD to give me peace of mind in a world where I otherwise feel out of control. A queer friend of mine with an anxiety disorder prefers to use birth control pills to completely suppress her period. For her, being in control of when and if she gets her period is not only convenient, but also reminds her that shes in charge of her body. All our experiences are unique, so always speak to a health care provider and mental health professional about any questions you have.

  • It can alleviate some causes of depression

Hormonal birth control can help alleviate the depression symptoms associated with conditions such as premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder . For many people, birth control helps to manage and even improve their moods and overall mental health.

  • There are many types of birth control. How can you know which will best fit your needs? A conversation with your health care provider is essential. Here are some of the things you may want to consider:

The Burning Question Is: Why Is The Fight/flight Response Activated During A Panic Attack Even When There Is Apparently Nothing To Be Frightened Of

What causes panic attacks, and how can you prevent them? – Cindy J. Aaronson

Upon closer examination of the causes of panic attacks, it would appear that what we are afraid of are the sensations themselveswe are afraid of the body losing control. These unexpected physical symptoms create the fear or panic that something is terribly wrong. Why do you experience the physical symptoms of the fight/flight response if you are not frightened to begin with? There are many ways these symptoms can manifest themselves, not just through fear.

For example, it may be that you have become generally stressed for some reason in your life, and this stress results in an increase in the production of adrenaline and other chemicals, which from time to time, would produce symptoms.and which you perceive as the causes of panic attacks.

This increased adrenaline can be maintained chemically in the body, even after the stress has long gone. Another possibility is diet, which directly affects our level of stress. Excess caffeine, alcohol, or sugar is known for causing stress in the body, and is believed to be one of the contributing factors of the causes of panic attacks .

    What About The Other Feels

Most hormonal birth control and mood research focuses on anxiety and depression. But those arent the only two emotions that the pill can impact.

A 2018 study found that taking birth control pills helped folks feel more emotionally stable. This led to other benefits like greater relationship satisfaction.

The pill can also affect your sex drive. A 2019 review found that hormonal BC made a lot of peeps aroused AF. But other folks horny levels took a hit. So its hard to say exactly what the pill is gonna do to your sex drive.

How Could The Pill Be Contributing To Depression

There are several mechanisms at play and more research is needed to understand the far-reaching impacts of the pill. What we do know is the pill depletes nutrients crucial for brain health, disrupts thyroid hormone, causes issues with your adrenals, and inflammation in your gut. Any of these can cause someone to feel depressed.

But more recently there has been evidence showing that pill users experience a decrease in neuroprotective molecules and have increased levels of neurotoxic chemicals compared to women who are not on the pill. That means being on the pill can be bad news for your brain.

How does this happen? It all comes down to how the amino acid tryptophan gets processed while on the pill.
