Does Abilify Treat Bipolar Disorder

Don't Miss

When Do You Need To Reduce The Abilify Dosage

My Experience on Abilify for Bipolar Disorder | Week Three

A dosage reduction is required in people who are known CYP2D6 poor metabolizers administer half the usual dosage. Blood levels may need monitoring as Abilify can cause numbers of white blood cells to decrease. May increase blood sugar levels. People with a history of diabetes or at risk of diabetes should be monitored closely.

Learning To Recognise Triggers

If you have bipolar disorder, you can learn to recognise the warning signs of an approaching episode of mania or depression.

A community mental health worker, such as a psychiatric nurse, may be able to help you identify your early signs of relapse from your history.

This will not prevent the episode occurring, but it’ll allow you to get help in time.

This may mean making some changes to your treatment, perhaps by adding an antidepressant or antipsychotic medicine to the mood-stabilising medication you’re already taking.

Your GP or specialist can advise you on this.

How To Use Abilify

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking aripiprazole and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use . To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

The manufacturer directs to swallow this medication whole. However, many similar drugs can be split/crushed. Follow your doctor’s direction on how to take this medication.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/cup. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.

Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

It may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.

Patient Satisfaction And Patient

Abilify Alert Flyer

The PSMQ-M was used to evaluate patient satisfaction with AOM 400 and to determine the side effect burden of AOM 400 relative to the patients previous medications. These data were interpreted as patient-assessed tolerability of AOM 400 as maintenance therapy for BP-I. The PSMQ-M is a simple 4-part questionnaire that patients complete independently, requiring little to no clinician aid.

Two Black Box Warnings On Abilify

Black box warnings are included on medications when they have the potential to cause serious, life-threatening side effects. Abilify carries two black box warnings from the FDA:

  • Increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis: Abilify is not FDA-approved to treat people with dementia-related psychosis, although it is sometimes used for this purpose. Treating elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis with an antipsychotic medication puts them at a somewhat increased risk of death.
  • Suicidality and antidepressant drugs: Although it is not an antidepressant, Abilify carries the standard warning that antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults.

If you are having suicidal thoughts, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 for support and assistance from a trained counselor. If you or a loved one are in immediate danger, call 911.

Drug Interactions Of Latuda Vs Abilify

Latuda and Abilify are primarily metabolized in the liver by the CYP3A4 enzyme. Their use may need to be avoided, adjusted, or monitored when combined with medications that act as CYP3A4 inhibitors or CYP3A4 inducers. Drugs that act as CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole and ritonavir, can cause increased levels of Latuda or Abilify and increase the risk of side effects. Drugs that act as CYP3A4 inducers, such as rifampin and carbamazepine, can cause decreased levels of Latuda or Abilify and decrease the effectiveness of the antipsychotics. Combining Abilify and CYP2D6 inhibitors, such as quinidine and fluoxetine, may lead to increased Abilify levels and side effects.

The use of Latuda and Abilify may need to be monitored or avoided while using antihypertensive drugs or benzodiazepines. Taking these antipsychotic medications with antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Benzodiazepines may compound the sedative side effects of Latuda or Abilify.

There is an increased risk of cerebrovascular adverse reactions, such as stroke and transient ischemic attacks, in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Taking Latuda or Abilify also carries a risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome , which can cause symptoms like high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, and changes in heart rate. NMS is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Latuda and Abilify may cause metabolic changes, such as high blood sugar levels, increased cholesterol levels, and weight gain. These medications can also cause low white blood cell counts, seizures, and low blood pressure.

Consult a healthcare provider for other possible warnings and precautions before using Latuda or Abilify.

Abilify Use With Other Drugs

Abilify

For some of its approved uses, Abilify may be used in combination with other drugs. However, when treating major depressive disorder , Abilify is always used with other drugs.

Below, we describe some of the drugs that may be used with Abilify. Your doctor will closely monitor you during treatment to watch for side effects from the drugs youre taking. And theyll also monitor how the medications are working to treat your condition.

During treatment, your doctor may increase or decrease doses of the medications youre taking. Or your doctor may change your medication regimen altogether. Doing these things helps to ensure youre getting the most benefit from your treatment.

If you have questions about using medications with Abilify, talk with your doctor. They can recommend an appropriate treatment plan for your condition.

What Happens When You Take A Medication With Abilify

Medicines that interact with Abilify may either decrease its effect, affect how long it works for, increase side effects, or have less of an effect when taken with Abilify. An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of the medications however, sometimes it does.

What Effects Does Abilify Have On The Brain

Its not known exactly how Abilify works inside your brain. However, its believed that the drug may work on receptors for certain brain chemicals. These brain chemicals include dopamine and serotonin.

Dopamine is important in regulating how you think and feel. And serotonin is important in controlling your mood and behavior.

Its believed that certain mental health conditions may cause you to have too much dopamine or serotonin in your brain. Examples of these mental health conditions include schizophrenia, mania, irritability related to autism, and Tourettes syndrome. And Abilify is approved to treat each of these conditions.

Abilify may work by balancing your dopamine and serotonin levels. This way, you dont have too much or too little of the brain chemicals, which makes your thoughts and behaviors easier to control.

Aripiprazole Alone Or In Combination With Other Drugs For Treating The Acute Mania Phase Of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that is seen as periods of high mood called mania, or hypomania if less severe, and periods of low mood .

Medication is the main treatment for mania, with the first aim to decrease agitation, aggression and dangerous behaviour.

Antipsychotics and other antimanic medicines are included in guidelines for treating mania. This review considers the antipsychotic, aripiprazole, and assesses how effective it is in the treatment of acute mania. It also examines the side effects of aripiprazole and discusses whether people find aripiprazole to be an acceptable treatment for themselves.

Ten studies are included . Most studies compared aripiprazole versus placebo, but some researchers compared aripiprazole versus haloperidol and versus lithium . Two studies examined the effect of adding aripiprazole to another treatment and compared this combination versus placebo combined with these other treatments. We assessed the overall risk of bias in the ten studies as unclear.

Aripiprazole is an effective treatment for mania in a population that includes adults, children and adolescents, although its use leads to gastrointestinal disturbances and movement disorders. Comparative trials with medicines other than haloperidol and lithium are few, so the precise place of aripiprazole in therapy remains unclear.

Randomised trials comparing aripiprazole versus placebo or other drugs in the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes.

Sensitivity Analyses For Primary And Secondary Outcomes

Relative reduction in heterogeneity variance for recurrence/relapse of any mood episodes for sensitivity analyses focusing on studies including only non-rapid-cycling patients with BD, nonenriched studies, and those not sponsored by industry were 29%, 21%, and 29%, respectively . Although outcomes with aripiprazole and aripiprazole+valproate were superior to placebo in the unadjusted analysis, the results did not reach statistical significance in the sensitivity analyses. The results of other comparisons for this outcome in the unadjusted and sensitivity analyses were similar. We did not detect relative reductions in heterogeneity variance for other outcomes in any of the sensitivity analyses .

Heterogeneity Inconsistency And Results Of The First Network Meta

Global heterogeneity was low to moderate for most outcomes other than insomnia, dry mouth, and increased weight . We also did not detect considerable heterogeneities for most of the outcomes in certain comparisons . We did not find significant global inconsistencies in the primary and secondary outcomes. Percent inconsistency loops in the recurrence/relapse of any mood episode, depressive episodes, manic/hypomanic/mixed episodes, all-cause discontinuation, and discontinuation due to adverse events were: 0%, 13.6%, 9.1%, 0%, and 0%, respectively. However, we detected global inconsistency in insomnia and increased weight. We did not analyze global inconsistencies in prolactin-related adverse events and dry mouth due to insufficient data. Funnel plots with fewer than ten studies might not be meaningful. The confidence in evidence was often low or very low.
