In fact, 64% of Americans believe that the conditions have a lot in common when, in reality, they dont. People with schizophrenia can lose touch with reality and sometimes act like two different people. However, that is not the same as having a multiple personality disorder.
What Are The Different Types Of Schizophrenia
Prior to 2013, schizophrenia was divided into five subtypes as separate diagnostic categories. Schizophrenia is now one diagnosis.
Although the subtypes are no longer used in clinical diagnosis, the names of the subtypes may be known for people diagnosed prior to the DSM-5 . These classic subtypes included:
- paranoid, with symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech
- hebephrenic or disorganized, with symptoms such as flat affect, speech disturbances, and disorganized thinking
- undifferentiated, with symptoms displaying behaviors applicable to more than one type
- residual, with symptoms that have lessened in intensity since a previous diagnosis
- catatonic, with symptoms of immobility, mutism, or stupor
According to the DSM-5, to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, two or more of the following must be present during a 1-month period.
At least one must be numbers 1, 2, or 3 on the list:
A Future After Schizophrenia
- 1 out of every 4 people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia will completely recover within 10 years.
- Another 1 out of every 4 people with schizophrenia are rated as being much improved and can live a mostly independent life.
- Only 15% of those with schizophrenia will still be unimproved and hospitalized after 10 years from their first diagnosis.
- About 1 out of 10 people diagnosed with schizophrenia will take their own lives within the first decade of their diagnosis.
- When extended out to 30 years after first diagnosis, those who are greatly improved increases from 50% to 55%. Hospitalizations decrease by 5%, but suicides increase by 5%.
