Benzodiazepine Anxiety Addiction Connection

Does anxiety medication work?

Firstly, some of the characteristics of someone who suffers from anxiety can include an addictive personality. When profiling those with clinical mood disorders, its been found that there is a connection between how easy it is for them to become addicted. Benzodiazepines are addictive, this is clear. They can lead to physical and psychological dependence which can cause uncomfortable, even deadly, withdrawal symptoms. The brain becomes altered when you take benzos, which can cause disruption if stopped cold turkey. If you dont seek out medical detox, you could experience a seizure. For those who legitimately take normal doses as prescribed by their doctor, theres a small percentage of dependency. Its when someone abuses benzodiazepines that it becomes problematic.

Which Medication Is Right For Me

For that, youll need to talk to your local mental health prescriber. Theyre the best source of information, as they know you, your health, and your situation. They can also walk you through the process and answer any questions you might have, and they can even translate some of the often-intimidating clinical language. If youre wondering if anti-anxiety medication is right for you in the first place, thats also something to discuss with your prescriber.

Do I Need This Treatment

A certain amount of anxiety or insomnia is a normal reaction to what is happening in your life. You may worry or feel stressed, and sometimes these feelings can keep you up at night. Most often, these feelings pass and are not a problem. However, these feelings can become a problem when they continue over a longer term, cause severe distress, make you feel physically ill and affect your behaviour. This kind of anxiety may be triggered by a challenging life event. It can also be a symptom of a mental health problem.

The ability to fall asleep and to sleep through the night can be affected by many types of health problems. These include physical conditions that cause pain or trouble breathing, as well as mental health problems. When sleep is disrupted, health can be further affected.

While each situation is unique and different treatment approaches may be called for, benzodiazepines can help to provide relief.

Finding The Right Medication

These 7 Medications and Workouts Do Not Mix

There are several different medications on the market that may be used to treat the symptoms of anxiety or panic. They include:

These medications work differently and each comes with their own potential side effects and risks. Your doctor or psychiatrist is the best person to discuss the differences between medication options to find the best fit for you. Be sure to discuss your complete health history and current substance use with your doctor before beginning an anti-anxiety or anti-panic medication.

In general, these medications work by reducing the overall amount of activity in the brain, leading to a calming effect. Antianxiety medications begin working quickly and have relatively few side effects. Drowsiness, poor coordination, and fuzzy thinking are the most common side effects. Doctors often prescribe the lowest effective dose to help minimize these effects. Still, people taking these medications should refrain from operating a motor vehicle until they know with certainty how the drugs affect them. Some prescriptions may call for a once-daily dose of these medications, while others may simply suggest that a patient take the medication only as necessary to control symptoms.

How Do I Prevent My Cat From Getting Anxiety

The best prevention for anxiety is understanding the reason for the anxiety. This can help you avoid situations that cause anxiety or help your cat adapt to them if theyre unavoidable. Cats crave routine and have some basic needs. They need to feel secure when they eat, drink, use the litter box, play, and explore.

Ways to ensure these basic needs are met include:

  • Provide your cat with food in small amounts throughout the day.

  • Place toys and treats inside for your cat, so they can pounce, play, and feel as if they are hunting.

  • Interact with your cat and provide ways for them to exercise. Consider adding cat perches or building something they can climb on, hide in, or scratch.

Psychological Therapies For Gad

If you have been diagnosed with GAD, you’ll usually be advised to try psychological treatment before you’re prescribed medication.

You can get psychological therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy and applied relaxation on the NHS.

You can refer yourself directly to an NHS psychological therapies service without a referral from a GP.

What To Do In Case Of Overdose

Overdosing on anxiety medication can be very dangerous. Many of the long-term anti-anxiety medications affect brain chemistry, and overdosing on these medications can lead to changes in brain function that can damage the body and, in some circumstances, lead to death.

Benzodiazepines in large doses will suppress breathing and may cause a complete cessation of breathing. Medication can be given in hospitals to reverse the effects of a benzodiazepine overdose in severe cases. Someone who has experienced an anti-anxiety medication overdose should call 911 and seek immediate medical attention. If you are with someone who has overdosed on anti-anxiety medication, you should call 911 for them. It is important to find out what type of medication was overdosed on, how many pills were used and the strength of the dose for each pill.

Anxiety can consume peoples lives and prevent them from living fully. It is a challenging issue and can be a clinical mood disorder that demands medication. Its important that along with anti-anxiety medication, you also utilize the other therapy that can help manage anxiety. Its understandable to look for alternatives for your anxiety based on the benzodiazepines addiction rate. There are anti anxiety herbs on the market that may help ease the body and mind from stress. Natural supplements may not cause addiction but they are still potentially harmful. Kava, for example had promise of being a viable natural anxiety medication. Reports found that it caused serious liver damage even when its used for a short period of time. Herbs like kava are somewhat sedating which is why they can relax you. They are non-addictive relaxants. Some will consume excessive herbs to try to get to a relaxed place in their mind. Passionflower, chamomile, and lavender are all means of relaxing. If someone has an anxiety disorder, these options probably arent potent enough to prevent panic attacks and other serious anxiety symptoms.

Which Drugs Or Supplements Interact With Anti

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors have many important drug interactions when they are used for the treatment of anxiety or other health conditions.

Patients should not take anxiolytic drugs with any of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor class of antidepressants or other drugs that inhibit MAOIs such as linezolid and intravenousmethylene blue. Examples of MAOIs include:

  • procarbazine

Patients that take such combinations may develop confusion, high blood pressure, tremor, hyperactivity, coma, and death. Patients may develop similar reactions if they combine SSRIs or SNRIs with other drugs that increase serotonin in the brain.

Combining SSRIs or SNRIs with warfarin, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or other drugs that affect bleeding may increase the likelihood of patients developing upper gastrointestinal bleeding when these drugs are used for the treatment of anxiety or other health conditions.

Special Benzodiazepine Risk Factors

Anyone who takes benzodiazepines can experience unpleasant or dangerous side effects. But certain individuals are at a higher risk:

People over 65. Older adults are more sensitive to the sedating effects of benzodiazepines. Even small doses can cause confusion, amnesia, loss of balance, and cognitive impairment that looks like dementia. Benzodiazepine use in the elderly is associated with an increased risk of falls, broken hips and legs, and car accidents. Long-term benzodiazepine use also increases the risk of Alzheimers disease and dementia.

People with a history of substance abuse. Because theyre physically addicting and on their own and dangerous when combined with alcohol and other drugs, anyone with a current or former substance abuse problem should use benzodiazepines only with extreme caution.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Benzodiazepine use during pregnancy can lead to dependence in the developing baby, with withdrawal following birth. Benzodiazepines are also excreted in breast milk. Therefore, pregnant women need to have a thorough discussion about the risks and benefits of these medications with their prescribing doctor. If medication is necessary, the goal is the smallest effective dose.

How Do Antianxiety Agents Work

Buspar In The Treatment Of Anxiety

Antianxiety agents are medications prescribed to treat anxiety and related disorders. Antianxiety agents work on the central nervous system to reduce hyperactivityin the brain and induce a calming effect. Many of the antianxiety agents are also used for sedation, as muscle relaxants and to prevent seizures.

Antianxiety medications are of two main types:

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines work on the brains limbic system, which regulates emotional and behavioral responses, and reticular formation which regulates sleep and consciousness. Benzodiazepines increase the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid , a chemical messenger in the brain that inhibits nerve signals.

Benzodiazepines bind to GABA receptors, a type of protein molecules on the membranes of nerve cells , and increase the inflow of chloride ions, which enhances GABAs effects. GABA inhibits electrical activity in the brain and produces a sedative effect.

Nonbenzodiazepines

Currently, two nonbenzodiazepines are used as antianxiety agents:

  • Buspirone: Buspirone increases the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that has many functions including mood regulation. It is not fully clear how buspirone reduces anxiety, but the effect is thought to be from increased serotonin activity in the anxiety/fear circuitry of the brain. Buspirone does not affect GABA receptors, hence does not produce sedation.
  • Meprobamate: Meprobamate works on GABA receptors and has mild sedative, muscle relaxing, and anticonvulsant effects.

Do Anxiety Medications Have Any Serious Risks Or Side Effects

Of all the medications described here, benzodiazepines have the highest risk for side effects. Its possible to become dependent on them and build tolerance to them. Over time, you may need higher doses to experience the same effects.

These effects can happen to anyone. This is because of the way benzodiazepines work in the brain.

Withdrawal symptoms can develop if benzodiazepines are suddenly stopped after being used for a while. To avoid withdrawal symptoms, its recommended to gradually lower your dose. Your healthcare provider can help you with this. But because of these potential side effects, benzodiazepines arent recommended as first-choice medications.

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are a serious side effect associated with antidepressants. You should talk to your healthcare provider right away if you experience this while taking an antidepressant.

Other Medications For Anxiety

Many other medicines may help treat anxiety, although doctors usually only prescribe them if SSRIs or similar drugs do not work.

Other medications for anxiety include:

Beta-blockers

Beta-blockers are a common medication for people with high blood pressure and heart conditions. However, doctors may prescribe them off-label for anxiety in certain situations.

Beta-blockers reduce the effects of norepinephrine, meaning that they can relieve some of the physical symptoms of anxiety. Examples of beta-blockers include atenolol and propranolol .

Buspirone

This anti-anxiety medication may treat short- or long-term anxiety symptoms.

Buspirone works much more slowly than benzodiazepines and may not treat all types of anxiety disorder, but it causes fewer side effects and has a lower risk of dependency.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are one of the earliest types of antidepressant. Doctors may prescribe them off-label to treat the symptoms of panic disorder and social phobia. Types of MAOI include:

  • isocarboxazid

The United States Food and Drug Administration require all antidepressants to carry a black-box warning relating to the risk of suicide in children and young adults.

People under 25 years of age may experience an increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors while taking antidepressants, particularly within the first few weeks of use.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK , and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Based on clinical studies, the effect of magnesium supplementation on anxiety symptoms may not be better than a sugar pill. Patients should consult their doctor and pharmacist before self-treating anxiety symptoms with nutritional supplements.

Researchers have looked into the effect of Yoga on improving anxiety. Some of these small clinical studies suggest that Yoga may improve anxiety symptoms by improving the levels of GABA in the brain. Since Yoga and other types of exercise are beneficial for overall health, it may be a useful addition to standard medical therapy for anxiety.

What Can I Do To Help My Cat Calm Down Naturally

Pets are in tune with the emotions of their owner, so try to remain calm around your cat. There are also several natural products on the market that claim to help calm your pet. But none of these have solid evidence showing they work.

For example, feline facial pheromones have been studied but did not improve stress in shelter cats. Ask your vet before giving any natural products to your cat.

Another option is to work with an animal behaviorist. An animal behaviorist may use methods called desensitization and counter conditioning. These behavioral therapies help your cat to adjust to anxiety triggers and provide them coping skills over time.

How Experts First Treat Anxiety

Once you understand the type of anxiety youre dealing with, you can start to explore measures with a physician or mental health professional who can help you manage the symptoms. While anxiety can present itself in many different forms, all anxiety disorders have one thing in common: They are highly treatable, and most of them respond well to medication, said Chelsea Hudson, licensed therapist in Chicago and founder of Cityscape Counseling.

However, that doesnt mean you should immediately head to your doctor to get a prescription. Many people think medication is a magic bullet to feeling better, Baksh said, but in reality, its part of a comprehensive treatment plan that should also include other interventions, such as lifestyle changes and therapy.

Seeking professional help from a counselor, guided imagery, family and peer support and meditation have all been shown to help alleviate anxiety, Baksh said. Cognitive behavioral therapy in particular has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety disorders, Sistrunk said.

Lifestyle changes can also play a big role in managing anxiety. Incorporating more exercise into your day, improving your sleep and eating healthier can all help, said Katie Ziskind, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Connecticutand owner of Wisdom Within Counseling.

The Role Of Medication In Anxiety Treatment

When youre overwhelmed by heart-pounding panic, paralyzed by fear, or exhausted from yet another sleepless night spent worrying, youll do just about anything to get relief. And theres no question that when anxiety is disabling, medication may help. But are drugs always the best answer?

Many different types of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including traditional anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines and newer options like SSRI antidepressants . These drugs can provide temporary relief, but they also come with side effects and safety concernssome significant.

They are also not a cure. In fact, there are many questions about their long-term effectiveness. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, benzodiazepines lose their therapeutic anti-anxiety effect after 4 to 6 months of regular use. And a recent analysis reported in JAMA Psychiatry found that the effectiveness of SSRIs in treating anxiety has been overestimated, and in some cases is no better than placebo.

Whats more, it can be very difficult to get off anxiety medications without difficult withdrawals, including rebound anxiety that can be worse than your original problem.
