Are Depression and Anxiety the same thing?

It’s also common for people who are having a difficult time with an anxiety disorder to feel depressed as a result of the way anxiety is interfering with their lives. It’s my experience that most patients who experience this will find that their depression lifts naturally as a result of doing better with anxiety, and no special treatment for the depression is necessary.

There are two circumstances under which an anxiety patient may need specific help for depression. One is if he or she has become so depressed in response to anxiety that they no longer have the energy and motivation to overcome the anxiety disorder. In this case, either medication or cognitive behavioral methods can be used to help overcome the depression. The second is the case of a person who experienced a severe depression before the anxiety disorder appeared, a depression which was not just a reaction to the troubles imposed by the anxiety disorder. This depression, called a primary depression, is likely to require medication treatment.

If you find yourself confused about your symptoms of anxiety and depression, and what kind of trouble they may indicate, don’t struggle in silence with the confusion. Ask your doctor or therapist directly about your diagnosis.

Why People Get Confusedabout Anxiety And Depression

People get confused about the distinction between anxiety and depression for several reasons. The first is that, if they are receiving medication for an anxiety disorder, they’re probably getting an anti-depressant medication. A group of anti-depressant medications known as the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors have been demonstrated to be helpful with both anxiety and depression, and are now the preferred medication treatment for people who receive medicationfor anxiety disorders. It’s also crucial that your doctor take time to ask enough questions, Goodstein adds. “Many people go to a general practitioner first. They’ve been feeling depressed and think they may need an antidepressant. But if that doctor is very busy, he or she can’t do much evaluation.”

Under those circumstances, an antidepressant is often prescribed – yet that may or may not be the right choice. “Antidepressants are used to treat both anxiety disorders and depression. However, someone with bipolar disorder needs a different set of drugs — a mood stabilizer and antimanic medication,” Fagiolini tells WebMD. There are several types of mood-stabilizing drugs, which include medications like lithium and anticonvulsive drugs such as Depakote or Lamictal.

The danger: “Giving an antidepressant to someone with bipolar disorder could trigger a manic episode,” he explains. “Manic episodes can be dangerous, because you have very poor judgment, tend to use more drugs, drive recklessly, spend a lot of money, have much more sex – and have it completely unprotected. There’s a higher risk of high-risk behaviors because there is poor judgment.”

Why Are Anxiety And Depression Often Co

Its a cycle, says Sally R. Connolly, LCSW and therapist. When you get anxious, you tend to have this pervasive thinking about some worry or some problem. You feel bad about it. Then you feel like youve failed. You move to depression.

  • The chance of acquiring depression is much higher when an anxiety disorder already exists. Nearly half of those with major depression also suffer from severe and persistent anxiety.

People with an anxiety disorder should speak with a psychiatrist, therapist or other healthcare professional about their symptoms. Treatment for an anxiety disorder should not be delayed. If not caught in time, depression may find the door wide open for moving in and setting up house in those individuals.2
