What Over The Counter Medicine Is Good For Anxiety

Who Should Use Over

Alternative Medicine for Anxiety

A study of 690 German pharmacists determined that people seeking over-the-counter treatments for anxiety and depression:

  • Were more likely to be younger
  • Had a shorter duration of illness
  • Had less severe symptoms
  • Were skeptical about psychopharmacology

However, the researchers questioned whether OTC treatments were a logical or cost-effective solution to these problems. Most people purchasing over-the-counter treatments for anxiety would likely benefit from professional help in the form of talk therapy or prescribed medication. The exception might be for cases of very mild anxiety that seem to be helped by herbal remedies that offer relaxation at bedtime.

Though some doctors may recommend OTC medications like Benadryl for children and adolescents, it’s especially important not to give a child Benadryl to treat anxiety without consulting their doctor first. Diphenhydramine can be potentially dangerous, and may not be the best course of treatment for your child’s symptoms.

Otc Medications That May Help With Depression

While antidepressant medications are only available by prescription, there are some over-the-counter antidepression herbs and supplements you can try. These have mild antidepressant qualities and may help relieve symptoms that are not severe.

If you have mild to moderate depression without suicidal thoughts and urges, OTC preparations may be worth a try. If you have more severe depression and need reliable symptom relief, talk to a doctor or mental health professional, who may advise that you take a prescription antidepressant.

OTC options for depression may be most beneficial when they are used alongside other lifestyle modifications that have been shown to alleviate depression symptoms. These include regular exercise, getting enough sleep, finding social support, and managing stress levels.

Sleeping Pills Can Have Serious Or Even Deadly Side Effects

All sedative-hypnotic drugs have special risks for older adults. Seniors are likely to be more sensitive to the drugs effects than younger adults.

And these drugs may stay in their bodies longer.

The drugs can cause confusion and memory problems that:

  • More than double the risk of falls and hip fractures. These are common causes of hospitalization and death in older people.
  • Increase the risk of car accidents.

Mindfulness And Applied Relaxation

Mindfulness and applied relaxation are alternative types of psychological treatment.

Mindfulness focuses your awareness on the present moment. It allows you to acknowledge and accept certain feelings. It can reduce anxiety associated with the fear of actual situations or sensations. It helps to counter the sense of âtunnel visionâ that may develop during anxiety.

Applied relaxation focuses on relaxing your muscles in a particular way. A trained therapist teaches the technique which alleviates anxiety and involves:

  • learning how to relax your muscles
  • relaxing your muscles quickly in response to a trigger
  • practising relaxing your muscles in situations that make you anxious

Otc Vs Prescription Anxiety Medication

In the U.S., it is not possible to buy popular ADHD or anxiety medications over-the-counter , such as benzodiazepines, SSRIs, sedatives, or stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall. These drugs are classified as controlled substances because of their addictive properties and potential for abuse. In fact, overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines quadrupled between 2005 and 2015 as the market for anti-anxiety drugs climbs to a projected $4.15 billion by 2027 in the U.S. Similarly, a 2016 Johns Hopkins study found that non-prescribed use of the ADHD medicine Adderall by young adults went up by 67 percent and associated emergency room visits rose by 156 percent over a period of five years, indicating problematic use.

Aside from their danger for abuse, another issue with prescription medication is their lack of long-term efficacy. While they may provide immediate relief for some, when the side effects of such medications wear off, the user will find themselves facing the same problems again. This doesnt just lead to potential dependency on the drug, and a reliance on increased dosages, but it may also lessen the users natural coping skills.

How Do Mood Stabilizers Work

Your brain balance and stability are affected primarily by the neurotransmitters: epinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. These chemicals affect the way your brain tells you to react to your environment, and if they are out of balance they can tell you things that are not conducive to quality of life and good relationships.

ALSO READ: Everything you need to know about episodic mood disorder NOS

All these chemicals are affected by each other and the hormones in your body signaling you how to feel about what is happening. Here are some examples to give you an idea of how they affect your mood and mental state:

Low serotonin: Life is NOT good.

High serotonin: Life is good.

Low epinephrine: Dont do anything

High epinephrin: Do something now.

Low serotonin and high epinephrine: Something is wrong and you need to act now .

Low serotonin and low epinephrine: Life sucks and I cant do anything about it .

Dopamine, on the other hand, gives you motivation and focus. Low or high dopamine levels can prevent your ability to see clearly what is effecting you. It is less important to stabilize your mood than it is to know if you are in a stable mood or not.

I give recommendations at the end of the article for daily tonic herbs that can promote mental balance and clarity. Myself and countless other health enthusiasts have found fabulous benefits from these herbal remedies as mood stabilizers.

Natural Remedies For Anxiety

Natural remedies for anxiety are those that donât involve conventional medications . They include things such as herbs, aromatherapy, and performing certain actions that promote relaxation. Some people with anxiety use natural remedies alongside conventional treatments to find relief.

Examples of natural remedies for anxiety include:

Deep Breathing Exercises

Rapid, shallow breathing is a common symptom of anxiety. Breathing in this manner can increase your heart rate, make you feel dizzy, and may even increase the risk of a panic attack. Deep breathing involves taking deliberately deep and measured breaths to restore normal breathing patterns, which can help to reduce anxiety.

Weighted Blankets

Research shows that weighted blankets can be beneficial for alleviating symptoms of anxiety. The pressure helps to put your body into ârest mode,â reducing those symptoms and preparing your body to rest. These blankets come in many different sizes and weights, enabling you to find what works best for you.

Quit Cigarettes and Alcohol

Both alcohol and cigarettes may appear to calm your nerves at first. After taking a drink, however, your anxiety may worsen. A cycle can develop, leading to alcohol dependence.

Several studies also show that smoking can worsen symptoms of anxiety. Therefore, itâs a good idea to try to avoid drinking or smoking to reduce feelings of anxiety.

Can Benadryl Be Used For Anxiety

Steven Gans, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Can you use Benadryl for anxiety? If you are living with anxiety and don’t like traditional medications or have not yet visited your doctor, you might wonder whether over-the-counter medications like Benadryl might help you manage your symptoms.

But there are many questions: Are they safe? Do they work? What are the pros and cons? And, can you use them to supplement other treatments you might receive? This article considers each of these questions to help you sort through your options for treating anxiety with over-the-counter medication like Benadryl.

Different Medications For Different Anxiety Disorders

One of the issues that comes from recommending a medication is that doctors have found that each medicine works differently on each individual. It starts with determining the disorder you suffer from. What works for generalized anxiety disorder may not work for panic disorder, and what works for panic disorder may not work for obsessive compulsive disorder, and so on.

No one can truly recommend a medication without knowing your own personal history, and you must never take a medication that affects your mental health without a doctor’s supervision.

Side Effects And Risks

OTC sleeping aids dont normally cause serious side effects or create any physical dependency concerns like prescription pills do. However, there can certainly be a risk for psychological dependency. Besides, OTC sleeping pills may become ineffective as your body builds tolerance if taken over a long period of time. They are not meant to cure insomnia, but to help reduce unpleasant symptoms of temporary sleep problems. Also, make sure to provide 7-8 hours of sleep time if you take sleeping pills. This will help reduce grogginess in the morning. The best sleep aid for you should have the least side effects on your energy levels in the morning and allow you to get sleep that feels natural and restful.

Remember that sleeping aids are not a cure for certain serious sleep problems. They may mask and provide temporary relief, but if symptoms worsen or do not resolve, talk with your primary caregiver to go over your options.

Lastly, if you find it hard to fall asleep due to loud snoring from your significant other, you may want to try Smart Nora. Antihistamines And Other Sedatives

10 Best Dog Anxiety Medication Over the Counter (2020 Reviews)

Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, are used to manage allergic reactions, but they can also cause sedation as a side effect. Some people take Benadryl for anxiety because of the calming and sleep-inducing side effects it can have. In fact, some doctors may even prescribe Benadryl for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry .

Benadryl takes about 15 to 30 minutes to start working and its peak effect occurs about 2 to 4 hours after taking it. An adult dose to obtain sedating effects is between 25 and 50 milligrams. However, these effects are less than you would experience with prescription sedatives such as benzodiazepines.

In addition to the sedating effects of antihistamines, other over-the-counter drugs can induce sedation and drowsiness, most notably those marketed as muscle relaxers or sleep medications.

Benadryl is not the only antihistamine that is sometimes used off-label for anxiety relief. Doctors may also sometimes prescribe Vistaril , an antihistamine that is similar to Benadryl, for the short-term treatment of anxiety.

Has anyone taken these over the counter anxiety medicine?

Hi, @littleonefmohio that is a very interesting question, and I’m guessing some of our members who’ve talked about anxiety may have tried over-the-counter anxiety medications or have a thought about them, like @jlor@Cathln@jkiemen@bekinprogress@stressedmesseddepressed@sophee@overcomer11@sandytoes14 .

Have you tried any of them, @littleonefmohio? If so, what was your experience?

Hello @littleonefmohio

Outside of sleep aids and some supplements that are marketed for depression, I’m really not familiar with OTC products that are used for anxiety. Is there any supplement or product in particular that you are considering?

I can say I am not familiar with OTC’s for anxiety. There are herbal OTC’s and I do not recommend some of the concoctions I have seen due to allergies and asking a MD about such is not something I would do either. There are many scams so buyer beware.Interesting topic for discussion.

Here is a discussion about activities to alleviate depression,
