How To Take And Store

  • Regular release trazodone tablets should be taken with a meal or snack to prevent stomach upset.
  • If you are prescribed the extended-release tablet it should be taken on an empty stomach, and it should never be chewed or crushed.

Aim to take your prescription at the same time each day.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is coming up, skip the missed dose, and never double your prescription. Because trazodone can cause drowsiness, you may need to wait until the evening to take your dose.

It is safest to keep this medication in its original bottle with the lid tightly sealed. Make sure it is out of reach of children and kept in a cool, dry place. Rooms with heat and moisture, such as the bathroom after a shower, are not the best storage place for trazodone.

Characteristics Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

The definition of GAD has changed over time. Originally, little distinction was made between panic disorder and GAD. As panic disorder became better understood and specific treatments were developed, GAD was defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3d ed. 8 as a disorder without panic attacks or symptoms of major depression. This definition had little reliability,9 and current diagnostic criteria 10 for GAD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed. 10 emphasize the psychic component rather than the somatic or autonomic symptoms . In addition to the DSM-IV framework, the symptoms of GAD can be conceptualized as being contained in three categories: excessive physiologic arousal, distorted cognitive processes and poor coping strategies.11 The symptoms associated with each of these categories are listed in Table 2.10,11

Trazodone As A Sleeping Aid

Whats keeping you up at night?

Maybe the past few months have been particularly busy at work and your mind cant seem to escape the stress youre feeling, even in the comfort of your bed. Or perhaps youre personally going through a rough patch and youre worried about how things are going to turn out in the end.

It could even be as simple as drinking one too many cups of coffee too late in the day.

Regardless of the reason you find yourself counting hundreds of sheep instead of sleeping in the middle of the night, insomnia can be debilitating to your productivity and daytime energy.

If youre lucky, your sleep problems only last a few days and then happily resolve themselves. It could be as easy as updating bedding or changing your nighttime habits to help your brain shut down for the night.

But unfortunately, thats not always the case.

At times, no matter how many remedies youve tried, you just cant seem to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

If this sounds like you, it may be a sign that its time to talk to a healthcare provider about insomnia and finding a sleep treatment that can help you.

Trazodone is one sleep prescription that your doctor may suggest.

What Does Trazodone Use To Treat In Dogs

Trazodone for dogs is used to treat various types of anxiety in dogs. These include:

  • Associated with the fear of separating from the owner and being lonely
  • Charging to people Resulting from fearing unknown individuals
  • Noise phobias Caused by fear of sudden or strange noise like thunderstorms, fireworks, and other noisy phenomena.
  • Vet-induced anxiety- Often comes after a surgical operation or any situation that forces your pup to stay in its crate for a long duration.
  • Resource Guarding- Caused by fearing to lose a valued item
  • Dog-to-dog aggressiveness- fearing other dogs
  • Generalized anxiety- Happens with no particular threat or cause

Similarly, studies indicate that trazodone is efficient in inducing calming and confinement for dogs after undergoing orthopedic surgery . Pups often need to stay in their crates for some time after surgery until they recover. However, the lack of movement often makes dogs uncomfortable, and most of them usually start whining and straining.

However, studies conducted on different dogs indicated that the oral trazodone medication is safe and effective in boosting behavioral calmness in dogs during the acute recovery time that follows orthopedic surgery.

Improves Anxiety And Ptsd Symptoms

Anxiety disorder is characterized by worried or panicked feelings that are frequent, excessive, and difficult-to-control. It is often accompanied by depression, and is commonly treated in a similar manner .

Due to its hypnotic and sedative effects, trazodone has been used to treat various anxiety disorders .

In a study of 6 patients, trazodone reduced the intensity of PTSD symptoms including agitation, insomnia, severe anxiety, fear, and self-destructive behavior in 66% of the patients .

According to a survey of 60 PTSD patients, trazodone decreased nightmares and improved overall sleep in ~75% of patients .

Interestingly, trazodone also treats anxiety symptoms in animals and is, therefore, used in various veterinary practices. For example, according to one study, trazodone significantly improved anxiety in cats during transportation .

Possible Trazodone Side Effects In Dogs

Possible side effects in dogs can be mild, such as lethargy from the sedative effects of Trazodone, to more serious complications.

Trazodone can cause an allergic reaction in some dogs, so if your pooch has a history of allergies to medication, make sure to consult your vet. Make sure to tell your vet if your dog has a history of heart, liver, or kidney disease.

If Trazodone is mixed with other antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors then a major side effect is the potential of serotonin syndrome.

Studies have shown dogs are at high risk forserotonin syndrome. This syndrome has many adverse effects, from low-risk to life-threatening.

Here are a few signs your pet is suffering from serotonin syndrome:

  • Stomach pain: vomiting, diarrhea, excess salivation
  • Muscle pain: tremors, shivering, stiff joints
  • Nervous system: constant loud barking, whimpering, confusion, seizures, restlessness
  • Mental: temporary blindness, sweating, high blood pressure

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, take them to the vet right away.

Possible side effects in dogs of Trazodone are rare, and dosages do not need to be altered unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.

How Can You Tell If The Anxiety You Feel Is Already A Disorder

It is not easy to know if the anxiety we feel is a disorder. Anxiety disorder comes in many forms such as phobia, panic attacks, and social anxiety. There is also a gray area between anxiety disorder and normal anxiety. However, there are many symptoms which can help us determine the kind or severity of the anxiety we feel. Here are a few symptoms of anxiety disorder:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Feelings of fear and panic
  • Shortness of breath

Precautions If You Take Trazodone

  • Because trazodone might not work well to treat insomnia after a few weeks, check in with your doctor periodically to discuss how its going or whether its still working.
  • If you have trouble getting to sleep, take it several hours before you go to bed. If you have trouble staying asleep, take it within 30 minutes of bedtime.
  • Avoid trazodone if youre recovering from a heart attack. Inform your doctor if you have abnormal heart rhythms, weakened immunity, an active infection, or liver or kidney disease. Use it cautiously if you have heart disease.
  • Watch for adverse effects. Thats especially important for people older than 55 or so because theyre more susceptible to abnormal heart rhythms and falls caused by dizziness or drowsiness. Close monitoring is also crucial if youre taking trazodone with another antidepressant.
  • As with any sleep medication, never mix trazodone with alcohol, and use it cautiously if youre taking other sedating medications or anti-hypertensive drugs. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other possible drug interactions.
  • If you develop an erection thats unusually prolonged or occurs without stimulation, discontinue the drug and contact your physician. Also call your doctor if you develop a fever or sore throat, or other signs of infection while taking trazodone.

Side Effects Of Trazodone

  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea or constipation
  • Dizziness, unsteadiness, dry mouth, and/or headache
  • Fatigue, tingling or numbness in the extremities , or ringing in the ears
  • Muscle pain, rash, tremors or shaking
  • Anxiety, difficulty with attention, decreased appetite, and weight loss
  • Prolonged and painful erections in men
  • Thoughts of harming oneself
  • Mild physical dependence

Both drugs have the risk for very rare and more serious side effects that would need to be addressed by a physician if they occur. Higher doses are more likely to produce more severe side effects. Trazodone is generally better tolerated in most people than Ambien because trazodone is not specifically designed to produce sedation. However, the actual side effects than any person will experience are difficult to predict, and physicians typically wait and see how the person reacts to the drug.

Traditional Role Of Trazodone In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder

Since the approval of trazodone, the drug has demonstrated comparable antidepressant activity to other drug classes such as TCAs, SSRIs and SNRIs in several clinical studies . As a result, trazodone may be administered as monotherapy or in combination with other antidepressant medications for the treatment of MDD .

Despite its established efficacy and popularity as an antidepressant in the USA during the 1980s, current treatment guidelines state that trazodone IR is now more likely to be used at lower doses as a sedative-hypnotic rather than as an antidepressant in the USA . However, there are limited clinical data to support the use of trazodone for this indication and trazodone continues to be approved solely for the treatment of MDD in the USA and the majority of countries worldwide.

Over the last few years, focus has been placed on the development of the new prolonged-release, once-a-day formulation of trazodone, with the aim to optimize its antidepressant efficacy, and improve the treatment schedule and compliance in MDD patients.

Due to its multifunctional pharmacology, appropriate dosing is indeed crucial to optimize clinical efficacy in patients with MDD.

What You Need To Know About Trazodone For Dogs

Dogs are known for being loyal, loving companions, and it is no surprise that they fill our lives with joy. However, sometimes dogs can experience depression or anxiety due to a change in environment or other life events. When this occurs, the dog may exhibit decreased appetite, excessive barking, and excessive licking of objects around them.

Trazodone is an FDA-approved drug used successfully in humans for more than 50 years to treat insomnia and anxiety disorders. Recent studies have shown that Trazodone also has an antidepressant effect on dogs, helping them cope with demanding environmental changes, types of anxiety, and stressful events.

This article will discuss the essential information you need to know about using Trazodone for dogs.

Trazodone: What Is It

Trazodone works by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the CNS. It is categorized as a serotonin antagonist reuptake inhibitor , meaning that it primarily blocks the ability of neurons to reabsorb serotonin once it has been released into the central nervous system. This leaves serotonin available in the central nervous system for longer periods of time and theoretically addresses issues with depression.

Because of the chemical composition of trazodone, it has been found to have mild sedating effects, and it is less effective than other antidepressants for the treatment of depression. Therefore, trazodone has found greater utility as a sleep aid than it has as an antidepressant medication.

Providing Exercise And Entertainment

Lastly, its important to consider the role that boredom can play in leading a pet to feel anxious. Ensure your dog is getting adequate exercise needs or has a job to complete, recommends Dr. Burch. Dogs should be exercised daily for at least an hour of cardio.Without regular exercise, stress can manifest as tensionwhich leads to health problems like chronic pain and digestive issues, explains Dr Burch. She also recommends adding enrichment into your environment with puzzle toys, Snufflemats, lures, and other novel toys to help keep your dog engaged even while you are away.

If youve tried all you can at home to help your anxious dogs but are concerned that they may need more help, its important to contact a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination to rule out any painful area that can lead to anxiety. Additionally, they may recommend baseline blood work to rule out any metabolic or organ disease leading to the symptoms, Dr. Burch says. Based on these results, a veterinarian may then recommend some natural supplements or medication.
